Lucas the 1876 Sunset pickup sounds great in my LP! Sounded so good that im now looking for a bridge pickup thats in the tonal range of a seymour duncan JB. Any thoughts on what to choose?
I havent been able to find a set of planet tone pickups that i really liked until i heard the pickups in this guitar. Wish i could hear them without the compression b4 buying them. Great video, Lucas!
Thank you! I spend an unreasonable amount of time A/B'ing between compressor on and compressor off to make sure the tone is identical and only keeping the peaks down, so if it helps, it wouldn't have sounded much different without the compressor on :P
Hello there! I have this same exact model, year, and finish LP Classic. Very similar top, This was like watching you work on my guitar! Picked it up used and I also replaced the pickups and tuners. Great guitar and cool video, thanks for posting! Cheers!
man my brigde was colapsed the same way... i just sand the saddles with a file to correct the heights and did the top wrap to leave the preassure under the brigde
Had to go back and check the thumbnail. Didn’t even notice the knobs, it’s just midnight now and I felt like watching a restoration video. Thanks for sharing.
My first real LP was a 01' Classic in lightburst finish, just like yours. What a great guitar! resonant, toneful, easy to play. With a pickup upgrade of your choice (SD Antiquity, Burstbuckers, Classic 57, Thornbuckers) you got a R0/G0 for 1/3 of the price. I wish the neck was a lil bit thicker but love the vintage feeling of these old Classic. Loved the vid, a delight to watch. Keep it up!.
Yeah lightburst, you don't see these very often. Btw, a bit off but it would be great to see a video with your Classic and your Rectoverb playing some chunky riffs. Just sayin 😅.
I have one that is this one's sister, same year, same color, she is perfect. The bridge is collapsed just like yours, how did you manage to get it straight? I have tried it several times but it bends again, is it reversible? Great video. Thank you🙂
Great video. Wanted more Xanadu :) It really hits home to see how much money can be saved on guitars like this when you’re so capable at the work bench. Probably paid for those new pickups by doing the work yourself.
I do luthier work professionally and I most definitely would have charged 2-3 times what the pickups cost for all the work I had to do. Plus its very rewarding to bring something non-functional back to life :)
Great video and great guitar playing !!!! Would you say that the Seymour Duncan "Saturday Night" pickups are better ? Thank you and keep posting great videos and your guitar playing.
Thank you :) "Better" is very subjective. I think Seymour makes great stuff but I haven't tried those specifically. These pickups would be closer to something like the Alnico II Pro or Slash sets. Very sweet and vintage inspired.
I have a 2003 Classic 1960 plain top in Honey Burst (I think that is the color) .... This reminds of that a lot.... I like Grovers feel and quality but normally change out the Kidney buttons for Tombstone... Not a Kidney lover .... Nice work, love the guitar
I have often wondered what kinds of humidity related problems guitars have that spend decades in hot, muggy places like Florida. I live a few KMs off of the Atlantic ocean in Canada, and every time the season changes or the humidity drastically rises, I have to do a complete setup to keep things how I want them. Probably 4 times a a year. I always know that humidity is starting to be an issue when I pick up a guitar in the morning after putting it away and in tune at night...only to find every string has gone sharpe do to the wood swelling. I'm sure this is a much, much bigger issue in super humid places like Florida. I went to Florida for 2 weeks about 5 years ago...and I remember that for those 2 weeks, I was never dry. I'd shower as soon as I got up...and I would never dry. haha.
I had one of those. But a 2004. Same color and all. Loved everything about it except the stock 496R/500T hot ceramic pickups. Swapped them out for a set of Bare Knuckle Mule PAFs and it changed it for the better! Eventually traded it for something and regret it every day. Mine also had the bridge collapse.
A lot of Gibson fans go on about how amazing the 90s Les Paul classics are, but I think this era with the “snot green” inlays were still really good as well. I know many of the guitar players from my favorite bands of the 2000s used Les Paul classics. They are pretty diverse in the range of music they play well. Just recently did a comparison test between a new 2023 SG standard I got compared to 2007 les Paul classic, and I had to admit that I thought the classic was just much better. Better feeling neck, better crisp sound with clarity, better bite to it. The SG is not bad at all; I just didn’t realize how much better my Classic was lol.
I have some 90's Gibsons that are really great, but this is just as good in my opinion. Mine seems to be a one piece top and a one piece back as well, which is pretty neat!
They are not listed yet at the time of this answer because I have the first pre-production set, but they will be listed shortly! I will add that link in the description as well.
I can't vouch for the pickups since mine were DOA but otherwise this is a killer guitar now that it's working again! I think mine actually has one-piece back, which is cool.
That's a keeper now. Love your videos like this. For ultimate trolling, you could have photoshopped a Fender headstock along with a Tele neck pickup to go with the mismatched knobs in the thumbnail. I do feel strongly drawn to Stanley tumblers now for some unknown reason 🤣 God bless and rock on 🎸👍
I had multiple spots where I stopped and explained things but usually when I do that people complain. Of course they also complain when I "go too fast" and don't explain so I can't win 😂 Thank you!
Nice video! Would you comment on this Gibson vs your Greco? I find the MIJ Les Pauls nice , but the mids are higher voiced vs a good Gibson. Might have been the particular guitar I had , an old Tokai LS50. Kind regards!
Most definitely I would answer a great question like this. In my _personal_ experience, it's quite the opposite. My Grecos are very full and dark and the Gibson has more jangle and "stringy-ness", almost like a Telecaster. Of course different pickups can adjust these things a lot but overall my 70's Grecos are very thick and warm sounding compared to this Gibson and at least 2-3 other Les Paul's I've owned.
Nice! I like the finish on her. I have always preferred lighter hued tops on Les Pauls personally. Sounds good too. I once owned a Hamer STD and rocked white Strat knobs on it for a while. People definitely made remarks about it, so I kept them on. The electronics were also from a G&L guitar and had the PTB circuit. Yes, I had G&L and Fender parts on and in a Hamer that was a copy of a Gibson. Painted with bass boat metalflake paint ala Dick Dale. I would tell the average Gibson owner to sue me if they don't like it but they either can actually afford to or they run the law firm themselves 🤣😭
What a beut of a player. Love the colour. Edited to add: You had to remove a lot of fret wire... you have created a wonderul fretless wonder! Careful, you might get used to that slinky feel :)
nice job, I have a 1990 Classic, a very early example, they are great guitars but those stock pickups are not very good. Mine has Dimarzio PAFs and PIO caps. You gave the guitar a new life!
I started doing that a few months ago and boy does it save me time washing hands- and it helps keep my skin from getting dried out from all the washing and chemicals.
Sorry, one more question. We're you using alcohol on the fretboard after you pulled the tape off from the level and crowning? Couldn't tell from the video, buy that bottle looks like one for isopropyl alcohol.
Yep, it's just 70% isopropyl alcohol. Important to note, I was _very_ careful to make sure I didn't get any on the finish. Alcohol does not agree with nitrocellulose like on this Gibson so I used a gentle guitar finish cleaner for the rest of the guitar. The alcohol just helps break up that thick layer of gunk on the fretboard so I don't have to clean it up with steel wool and make a metal shavings mess.
@LucasFowler Thanks brother! Yeah, when I was younger I took some alcohol to a spot of nitrocellulose and instantly learned a valuable lesson. Now I just use Naptha and Virtuoso cleaner on anything with Nitro. Nice tip to use alcohol on the fretboard to help with cleaning.
