I hear you. I spent way too many hours disabling the bloatware on that thing and it still wouldn't act right.
I also have a MyCloud Mirror that does seem to work, but only has a NAS drive. None of the other features work reliably enough for anything else.

Yours is the best video on UA-cam as to how to disassemble and reuse the WD MyCloud Hard Drive. I was thrilled until the very end when you said that I may not be able to access the data once the drive is inserted into the usb connection case. Of course it’s the data, 40 years of photos, that I uploaded that is what I want to salvage but it appears that this physical removal might be my only hope. MyCloud, after last weeks update, simple says Device Off Line and nothing I have done, the whole reboot protocol including a soft reset, has any effect. I’m going to order the Hard Drive Enclosure, RSHTECH USB 3.0 to SATA External Hard Drive Docking Station for 3.5 inch SATA I/II/III HDD SSD Up to 16TB Support UASP (Black) from Amazon and give it a try. Like everyone else in your comments I will Never Trust a WD NAS again! Thanks again for your Video!

Before you tear into it go to the WD forums and search through. There is a way to restore just the OS to a previous version without losing the data.
You need to download the old update file to your PC. There is also a way to factory reset just the OS but that would make me nervous.
There are a lot of helpful people on the WD forums but I haven't been to it in a few years.

You could create a virtual linux machine on a Mac or Windows to view all the partitions and recover your data before wiping. You should be able to mount the drive from Linux. The MyCloud will have a number of small partitions but one large terabytes sized one with your actual data.
Love the ending to your video 😛

I totally agree with you. I've been dealing with this shit for several years. I fucked them in the trash. People! Don't buy that shit. My letter to wd: I bought WD Cloud from you a long time ago, I used it to back up my computers from time to time, until the red light appeared. I had a lot of problems with your device: login problems, the device did backups for three days, etc. In retrospect, I rate it as a piece of shit. It's total shit with interface shit, communication etc. It's counterintuitive, hard for a layman to master. I tried to resuscitate them by taking apart and inserting a new disk. Unfortunately, I did not find on the network how to format a new disk on apple devices, because that's the only one I have. I fucked them trash and bought Synology. Finally, I'm at peace and everything works as it should. How can you sell this shit? You earn unfairly and your software engineers are morons.

Followed your recommendation right down to purchasing the enclosure you recommended. The plastic case has small slits on the bottom, and I left a 1/16 gap on the top by not completely closing the cover. Like to rest my portable drives onto of a $5 cooling fan bought at 5 Below. Also, per WD "we’re sending you a 20% discount coupon in January 2022 that you can use toward an eligible device." a 8TB MyCloud or 12TBMyBook.

Mines on OS3 and can not be upgraded. Which is bad due to security vulnerability. I've blocked internet access to it in rougher and turned off cloud storage on the drive web interface. But wondering if it's still secure. Maybe I should take out HD and stick it in the computer?

My understanding is the older ones are no longer being updated and are not secure no matter what. Something about a hard coded backdoor that can't be easily fixed.
Not all PCs can handle a HD of that size which is why I went with the external drive enclosure. At least I can get some use out of the drive.

Hi, I took out the hard drive and installed in the USB housing as you described. No problem, light blinking and computer recognizing it after I plugged it in. However, it showed it was only a 488MB dirve! It used to hold 2T when it worked (only a few months) as a cloud backup. I formatted it to NTFS as well as FAT with the same result. Any idea where my lost 1.5T storage went?

truth- this product is a piece of crap. It's WD Red NAS drive, which has a very bad saving method. once you hit around 3TB in the 6TB version, it's almost unusable. slow as hell. finally got the red light of death and after a week of backing up my files little bits at a time before it turned red, I finally got everything off of it. now it just doesn't leave the red light doesn't start. NEVER buy a My Cloud.

WD My Cloud in housing now not reading from computer
Initially I though this was the solution for the pesty WD drive as I copied and did a backup of my files to it. I worked wonderfully - I could read the files on the drive etc.. Until later when I switched the drive off and the next day on again. Message appeared, 'Error, cannot read from drive, you need to format. So I did and after various ways of formatting and partitioning it the same happened after I disconnected (Whilst drive was off) and re-connected again.
I had another hard drive (Seagate) from my computer which was lying around, and I decided to put that in the casing and connect. This setup has been running now without a problem for a while. However, as soon as I put the WD drive in, and put files on, I have the same issue as described previously.
Unless someone comes up with a solution to the WD issue, I'm really going to smash that drive with a lot of glee, as It caused me many hours of trying to get my money's worth out of that junk.
    Suggestions welcome,
    Thanks
