This was very simple and helpful. I have a slightly bigger net and I was extremely nervous to even try. You really did a great job demonstrating. Thanks
Fatt, Great video! We wanted to come down and fish for Blue cats. Wanted to know what the law is on Gill Nets in the James around the Hopewell area?? Wanted to get a Gill Net but not sure on what size to get for Gizzard Shad. You have any suggestions ?? Thanks PopPop
Is there a certain kind of gill net you use ? Are there different sizes? What do you recommend for catching shad down in the Hopewell area!! I'm new to fishing down there and have been bringing bluegill with me but would like to catch some shad
There are different lengths and a standard gill net license in VA cover you for up to 300ft I believe. I also feel like that is completely unnecessary. I use a 50ft net almost year round. In the super cold months I will switch to a 100ft and let it soak longer. Check areas that have warmer water and you should do alright. There is also a mesh size requirement and you can find all of that info on the VDGIF website.
@@FishinWithFatt That they do. Be interested to see if the blue and flathead get really big chowing down on them over the next few years. Damn good eatin too, if you don't mind the bones.
@@colsoncustoms8994 I know this is old, and you may have your answer, but I bought my from Memphis Net and Twine. They have nets specifically for catching Asian Carp. I got mine specifically for this purpose, eating and a bait source.
What size mesh yall using? Used to drift nets for herring here in NC on the roanoke. Been a looong time since doing it and really miss it. Unfortunately i havnt really caught much on gizzard shad. Ive done good with threadfun but they get hard to find around here.
Keith Andrews I’ll be honest I can’t remember the size of the mesh I know it’s the legal size for VA I’ll try to get an answer for you. It’s big though would not catch a threadfin

I understand this concern. I was raised in a situation in MS where people who gill netted were bad people. And they were; they kept bass, catfish, everything, and would strip a pond or creek bare. But this technique, targeting one species that needs targeting, releasing any bi-catch, seems perfectly ethical and legal to me. Thanks for a video showing how to do it efficiently and legally.
I would probably think differently if everyone could be trusted to use them wisely, but for every group of respectable fishermen there always seems to be one of those people who can’t be bothered to think about anything other than himself. I’m not trying to say your personally doing anything wrong, I’m just giving my opinion on the bigger issue.
SaneNoMore I completely understand what you’re saying there.... I wish everyone appreciated the natural resources we have and practice sustainable fishing.... I can assure you the only fish we harm are gizzard shad and we only take what we can use in a day. Thanks for watching and giving your opinion. I do appreciate it

What is the difference between gilnet and drag net
Gill nets are made from fishing line and catch the fish by the gills when they try and fail to swim through the holes.
great video where did you get your led weights for each end of your net
My buddy made them. Anything heavy will work. Old school window weights were almost standard when I was growing up
Can we use this in moving water
How heavy are your weights on your gill net??

Thanks for watching! Good Luck!
Here in Alaska you can use upto 45 fathoms 6inches or less length near 100 feet.
love your videos, where did you buy your 50ft net from ?
Richie Palmer OS Nets. I’m not sure if they are still in business but I heard a rumor they were.
How much was your net and what size mesh holes? 5cm?@@FishinWithFatt
Thanks for the info
What size net would be good for asian carp? 8-15 lb range mainly with a few bigger ones.
Colson Customs I’m not even sure bud. We don’t have them around here. Most of our bait are 12-20 inch shad. Best of luck
@@FishinWithFatt thanks for the reply, you guys are lucky to not have them haha
Colson Customs I agree. Although I’m hearing where they are established they are making a good bait source 🤷♂️

Sunds like a 3 inch mesh. Unless theyve changed the law it was a 3 inch mesh years ago.
Keith Andrews I think you are correct. They haven’t changed the rules on us yet
Im not even sure if we can still run a gillnets in inland nc waters anymore. I used to run flounder nets but sold them years ago.
Keith Andrews we can only use them up to the first fall line nothing too far inland

I got this net from OS Nets but you should be able to try your local bait shop and always make sure it’s legal for the waters you fish.

Too much muffler noise
gillnetting is an abomination and should be banned
Sorry you feel that way but thats the way we catch bait. Also if you do it like instructed no game fish will be harmed. Thanks for watching!
wow care to elaborate
It is illegal in most areas and the places it is legal there are strict laws on the use of them.
Reduce commercial nets. No reason not to allow well tended recreational nets I think.

Gil net fishing... should be for survival situations only. Otherwise it’s just a lazy way to deplete fish populations.
SaneNoMore sorry you feel that way. In our waters it’s the best way to keep the exploding shad populations in check.

@@SaneNoMore do u eat Fresh NC Seafood Gill nets are a big percentage of the commercial fisherman catch for inshore fish
SaneNoMore, If you really care about the fish (which I doubt you do). Why don't you go out and help the eradication of invasive fish.
