+Nelson Walker In interviews with various sociopaths/psychopaths especially those with religious or various issues its been known the eyes dilate to even becoming black. This is due to the rage, aggression or fixation on a particular person in this case the interviewer. Interestingly people with hard liquor or various types of drugs especially those with mind altering effects can also cause similar dilation cases however its only in aggression or hostile intent is when the Eyes go completely black which is very unsettling. Its possible this is a evolutionary holdover form of intimidation by primates or sentient life as a final means of intimidating a predator or competition before outright violence. It also could be one of the many origins of the myths and legends of aliens, monsters, or daemons. as a lunatic human with inhuman eyes would be classified as something probably other then human.

There's something terrifying in Iam Holme's soul, I think. He is great in this and great as a ring damage Bilbo. He has an air about him, like a kindly old grandfather who might knock your teeth out if you lost his false teeth.
This depiction of Jack the Ripper reminds me of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde because William Gull is a rich English man that pretends to be kind and gentle but he uses his Jack the Ripper identity to hide his crimes just like how Jekyll uses Hyde to hide his crimes.

The Custodian Helmet is the headgear traditionally worn by male police constables and sergeants while on foot patrol in England and Wales. Officers of all ranks in most forces are also issued a flat, peaked cap that is worn on mobile patrol in a vehicle. Ranks above sergeant wear the peaked cap only. However, some Inspectors wear the Custodian Helmet, but with two silver bands around the base (to match the two pips worn as rank insignia) to denote their position. Claimed by some sources to have been based on the spiked pickelhaube worn by the Prussian Army, it was first adopted by the London Metropolitan Police in 1863 to replace the "stovepipe" top hat worn since 1829. In 1863, the Metropolitan Police replaced the previous uniform of white trousers, swallow-tailed coat and top hat in favour of very dark blue trousers, a more modern button up tunic and the early type of helmet which had an upturned brim at the front and a raised spine at the back, running from the bottom to the top of the helmet, which became known as the "cockscomb".
Newgate Prison was a prison at the corner of Newgate Street and Old Bailey Street just inside the City of London, England, originally at the site of Newgate, a gate in the Roman London Wall. Built in the 12th century and demolished in 1904, the prison was extended and rebuilt many times, and remained in use for over 700 years, from 1188 to 1902.
The Black Eye's is apparently a unique condition that happens to some people when they react in such a way in this case rage and anger. Its part of the fight or die response, and the body chemically transfers blood flow to the muscles and other parts necessary to fight back or attack. The eyes dilate to better focus on the target subject. Whats frightening is that this usually only happens in a defensive role not offensive, and the Ripper apparently has excellent control of this trait to use it to attack victims as a predator Interesting thing is that also during this. The dilatation allows in more light meaning he likely could see what he was doing extremely well in low light conditions.
"One day men will look back and say I gave birth to the 20th century." As fictional as this movie is that line really rings true. Jack The Ripper inspired many other serial killers to follow in his/her's footsteps. Truly brilliant scene by Ian Holm may he rest in peace.
Ian Holm had a wonderfully diverse career. From the 1960s until 2020. Hexwas the sinister synthetic in Alien, a hobbit, Jack the Ripper and so much more....
My favorite performance by sir Ian was alien as my favourite character ash. Who along with his manufacturer, I found much scarier than the xenomorph. This performance outshines alien. He was so convincing as the kind and helpful Dr Gull. And equally as convincing as Jack. The characters were so different yet so similar.
Johnny Depp is a talented actor. Many of his roles are memorable and for the ages. That said, I don't think he was at his best here. But sharing this scene with Ian Holm-who is at his best-Depp can't really compare, unfortunately. Again, this is just my opinion about this particular scene, not Depp's filmography as a whole.
On the other hand, it's difficult to outshine Holm in this scene for another reason-the revelation that he's the Ripper and his quiet ominousness (and the wonderfully grotesque eyes, a great visual metaphor on the idea that the eyes are the windows to the soul), all of this makes it difficult for anyone to compete with this character in this moment.
Alan Moore wrote that in the original comic. Hollywood and the general public, geniuses that they are, then attributed the quote to the Ripper himself.
