Thank you for everything. I grew up knowing I literally owe my life to millions of brave Americans who fought in WW2. My mother told me that the greatest heroes were those who fought for justice and equality while they themselves were deprived of those rights. She was liberated April 15 1945 from Bergen Belsen....
Not sure you’ll ever know I wrote this. Col Charles McGee, thank you so much for your service and for taking the time to share a bit of your story. It’s past midnight and I should be asleep but I could listen for hours. Thank you for your strength, patience and for improving our country. God bless you.
409 combat missions, during three different wars. "Brave" would be an understatement. Col. Charles McGee's valor is beyond measure, and we could all learn something from his story. Even if we are not fighter pilots or soldiers at war, most people could try to be more courageous, more optimistic and more tolerant. Like Col. McGee.
I'm not sure what it matters, really, how many combat missions he flew or how many wars he fought in. I think that is one of the big problems with any examination of a cultural or government institution, it becomes something of a chicken-egg problem: how do you truly evaluate the institution without using the institutions' own measures of success and failure and by extension, of course, adopting their definitions of what their measures are and should be? Well, the first step is to reject those measures as insufficient for the task at hand. Otherwise you might as well just take their word that they are doing a good job. It has been said that a hero is a person looking for a good way to get themselves killed. Is it "bravery" to go to war, or simple recklessness, perhaps even an abandonment of personal responsibility? If war is a good thing, then why are we not constantly at war? Why doesn't everyone go to war? We went to war to fight the Nazis and the Japanese who wanted to go to war against the Allies. So it's a good thing to fight those who want to attack us, but a bad thing for them to attack us? Seems like if nothing else we should thank them for giving us such a great opportunity to do such good deeds...and continue to thank them while we kill them... I can think of a lot of reasons to fly 409 combat missions. But most of them revolve around the fact that flying a combat mission isn't all that dangerous in and of itself. If he had one enemy kill for every combat mission then he'd have 409 kills and that would truly be astounding. If he'd been shot down once for every 100 combat missions then he'd have been shot down 4 times over the course of his combat career. It seems clear to me that given a certainly level of competency, flying combat missions isn't all that risky, and he did it because he was good at it, he wanted to do it, he didn't really want to do anything else and a lot of people were happy to have him do it rather than do it themselves. I'm sure that most combat pilots would say the same. Some saw it as more of a risk than others did. But I'll bet you that the most bravery was required to do it the first time. At some point it just became a matter of luck, to keep getting into the plane and hoping that you wouldn't die. Even the best pilots eventually die. It's just a question of when.

Love this. He is a Hero, and he sure looks good for his age. His great grandson looks just like him. Thank you for your service. My late grandfather flew with General Eisenhower in 1942 as his chief engineer on B17. 1917-2005. Love Mr. McGee's interview. P51 Mustang is my favorite plane.
This makes me happy and sad at the same time because Mr. McGee looks just like my late father, but my father was much older than he. My father was born in 1905. Btw, one of my grade school teachers back in the late 1950s was a Tuskegee Airman during WW II, and he used to tell us about his experiences. Since I was just a little girl, I didn't understand nor really cared about what he was telling us. It wasn't until years later when I was in college that I understood AND appreciated his experiences. Thank you for your service, Mr. Hodges, Mr. McGee and your fellow Tuskegee Airmen! Good job! Btw, as of today (6/16/19), Col. McGee is still alive, and will hopefully celebrate his 100th birthday this December 7, 2019.

This man (USAF Brigadier General Charles McGee) is a legend. He had every reason to be angry and decided to stay positive while he worked toward change. What an epic life he has led. He is an incredible example to us all. Major respect.
Colonel McGee is an outstanding American hero and humanitarian. Kind, gracious and modest Colonel McGee continues to inspire our youth in way of civic leadership and encouraging youth to engage careers in aviation. He has truly upheld the culture of excellence and noble service that exemplified the legendary Tuskegee Airmen.
RIP brig gen McGee, I just watched this today after finding out he passed today, I'm glad to watch this amazing documentary on not just him, but even rosie, and other war heros. Keep up the work keeping our wonderful past alive as you continue to document the history of these ppl.

I'm kind of at a loss for words when I think about these kinds of people. Even though this man (and others like him) saw some of the worst of America he still fought for her. America is, indeed, a great country. America has not been perfect but men like this make us all a better country. Thank God for the freedoms we have had here in America. We would not have enjoyed them so long if it were not for men who are willing to fight. They deserve our most sincere respect and honor.
I just paid my respect to my friend's grandfather funeral last night. He was a 100 years old and a World War 2 veteran and what my people face coming back. That was the main reason the Great Muhammad Ali refused to fight in Vietnam.

Vietnam Veterans - - Many soldiers wrote about their experiences in the 80s!!! I've personally read over 50ty of those paper-back books written by them, their wives, their girl friends. Those stories were way different than these verbal ones today in 2020. Just saying.
Wow, his is a story beggin to be told, Autobiographically speaking, can't imagine the incredible experiences he has to share, not withstanding his personal experiences relating to the treatment of black servicemen during and probably after the second world, 3 distinguished flying crosses, 409 combat missions in 3 theatres of war makes for a compelling movie experience, c'mon get it done.
Now is the time to use the Tuskegee airman as a model to train black men to become policemen and eventually take over all police responsibilities and really become Heroes.

Vietnam Veterans - - Many soldiers wrote about their experiences in the 80s!!! I've personally read over 50ty of those paper-back books written by them, their wives, their girl friends. Those stories were way different than these verbal ones today in 2020. Just saying.
Wow, his is a story beggin to be told, Autobiographically speaking, can't imagine the incredible experiences he has to share, not withstanding his personal experiences relating to the treatment of black servicemen during and probably after the second world, 3 distinguished flying crosses, 409 combat missions in 3 theatres of war makes for a compelling movie experience, c'mon get it done.
It would be a great movie.
The potential that has been lost over time, excluded because of nationality, race and skin color is to be enraged about. Can we afford it?
Now is the time to use the Tuskegee airman as a model to train black men to become policemen and eventually take over all police responsibilities and really become Heroes.
