One thing that I love about marigolds is those of us in zones 9 and 10 can plant seeds really late into the season, and it LOVES heat. Sometimes called the Day of the Dead flower, it also has a lot of cultural significance for those of us who live in areas with a lot of Mexican heritage. Whether you celebrate or not, it's a really pretty flower with a lot of great uses. Let's start off at the beginning.
Marigold seeds are really easy to get started. The long and skinny seeds should be near the surface of the soil. You can direct sow them, but I recommend doing it in starter cells with a tray so you can bottom water. It's easier to monitor, and you can be more intentional when you plant which is important for spacing.
Fill up your cell with seed starting mix and moisten the soil. You can then set the seeds right on top of the soil and sift some soil on top of that. That ensures you won't have a stick or small stone right on top of your seed and keep it down.
Frost will kill marigolds. That's usually not a problem for us in zones 9 and 10, but you don't want to start them too soon. They love the heat, so we start them all through June and July.
When you are ready to transplant your starter into the ground, keep an eye on its roots. If it is root bound, carefully break up the ball a bit so the plant will stretch out. I prefer to plant at night and avoid planting on hot days. Pre-soak your soil, and you can water 1-2 more times to give your plant the best chance to acclimate successfully. For raised bed gardeners, pre-soak the entire raised bed. If needed, use some shade cloth!
As you plant, spacing is critical. Appropriate spacing encourages blooms and discourages disease. I recommend having at least 4-6 inches between plants to allow your plants to grow and put out lots of blooms.
Marigolds are all about the flowers, and you need to fertilize accordingly. Look for high levels of phosphorous and potassium since that helps the plant focus on blooms instead of the foliage.
When you are ready to harvest, it's best to cut them on a cool morning. They will continue to open after you cut them, so you can trim them as the petals are still unfurling. Follow the stem down (usually not very far) to the split and cut there which helps the next set of blooms come in. If you are growing for the blooms on the plant, dead head them (cut after they bloom) to encourage more growth down the road.
If you're saving the seeds, the petals will dry out, and you'll have a pod full of seeds ready to save. They're super easy to save so I really recommend it.

@@SanDiegoSeedCompany hi, my marigold seeds that I planted they didn’t grow so what happened and what did I do?
@@foodiesworldUSA it's tough to know what happened. Did they germinate? Did they sprout and then die?
Excellent video. Great info. So glad I found your channel!
Hello
I’m in 9b and marigolds grow so easy and gorgeous here. I would love to know how many different types of marigolds there are. Great video and learned a lot. Thank You.
This is the gardening 101 video I’ve been searching for. At first I was like, a 20 minute video on marigolds 🤯, but it’s so much more. Thanks so much!
I remember planting marigolds in elementary school to learn about plant growth! Now I have them in my lil veggie patch ❤
Same, it was my first plant ever and now they’re my fave flower
Mosquitos brought me here.
I'm currently in the "impossible" process of controlling the mosquitos in my neighborhood.
I don't know this women, but I love this women.
Did planting Marigolds help with your mosquito problem?
😂😂😂
I didn’t think I liked marigolds that much, until I grew them last year. They did amazing 😍 they are now one of my favorite flowers
Yay! Love to hear this
I have some Aztec Marigolds, they are about 2 ft talk, & are the colours of a beautiful sunset. I been sharing SEEDs with friends and family. I save SEEDs from a lot of my garden plants.
And the flowers are edible!
Same here 😏
Same! I never found interest in them. Took my 5 yr old to the nursery, and she picked 2 varieties. 🙄
Well, heck if they aren't my favorite flower now!!! We have the Safari and African Tiger varieties.
What delightful flowers.
This is quite possibly the best "1st video" I've ever watched when looking in to new plants for my garden. The amount of info, and the way you presented it was perfect. What a great "Teacher" you make.
This is the best video on marigolds I’ve seen. So comprehensive. I felt like I was drinking from a fire hose! Thank you!
I could actually smell the marigolds as i watched this video. Brings back memories of moms garden.
Great thorough video for beginner like me 🌼🏵👍🏼
I’ve been growing marigolds forever and I can’t believe how much I learned watching your video thank you!
I plant a group now for spring in the Veggie garden and then plant another round in late July garden for fall and Thanksgiving decorations around my front porch and front yard .... such beautiful GOD given JOY.
I've killed every marigold I've ever had in the last 30 years. Doesn't matter if it's from seed or as plants. This video has already helped. Finally, I might actually have success.
They may not be everybody’s favourite on looks or smell, but they are amazing as companion plants
I've been considering planting Marigolds in the holes of my cinder block raised garden.
Marigolds are one of my faves and the tomatoes seem to love them too! It was also nice to I hear a reference to our Mexican culture - Day of the Dead. I try to grow some for my altar but Last year's crop was a lousy one, and now I know why. Here in Solana Beach they put on a great festival for Dia De Los Muertos (November 2) every year and it's a challenge to procure enough marigolds.
Ofrendas look so beautiful covered in Marigolds!!
Great information, thanks! I’m a renewed Marigold lover!
They are my father’s favorite flower 🌸 💜💜💜 Rest In Peace pop
Indians and marigolds, that’s a special bond which can’t be described
Aww Brijette I really wanted to give you a hug when you mentioned your mom and dad on the ofrenda this year. Love marigolds. You’ve inspired me to start some more from seed. Thanks for letting me know the correct way to plant them.
Thank You. Im going to go out and try to thin out the marigold plants I grew from seeds now.
My first year growing from seeds, I’ve been gardening for 50 years or so, but never had the time, thank you for the great ideas 😊 I love marigolds especially the large yellow ones
I just replanted my Marigolds after they didn’t grow for a month. Didn’t realize they compete. Thanks!
I love marigolds, they have a huge significance in Mexican culture. I grew up finding them around my house in September-November
😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅 0:59
Thank you Annalisa! I love when I see someone talking about my heritage ❤❤❤❤❤
My marigolds had whiteflies one year and I never planted them again. After watching this video I’ll try them again this year because they are so cheerful and take the heat so well.
Thank you, Brijette! I'll plant marigolds from seeds next time instead of buying seedlings from the nursery. The okra seeds I got from you all germinated! And so did the sweet corns!! Newbie here and learning a lot from you. And it helps that the seeds I plant are all top quality! Appreciate all that you do to educate us and provide us with high quality seeds. Blessings to you and your family always! 🌻🌱❤🙏
Get seedlings and let the blooms go to seed then use those seeds for the next year u can even go at the end of the season when there on clearance and half dead to harvest the seeds
I know this video is old and I’ve watched it before … but I just now realized you mentioned your parents passed away. I’m so sorry for your loss. They’ll be so proud of you knowing how many people you help with your videos and your seeds. Can’t wait to see the marigolds you grow for their ofrendas. Thank you for all you do. ❤❤❤
Thank you 🙏
I would absolutely love some free Marigold seeds. I am decided this year I am actually going to plant marigolds everywhere in my garden. For the pollinators, for its ability to chase pest on the track the good banks and all the other good stuff. I’m going to go watch the video now and hoping that I’m a winner of the seats
I have loved Marigolds for most of my 70 + years ! They go in every garden every year ! Love your channel
I love marigolds thank you for showing me about how to plant marigolds
I learned a LOT in the first 8 mins of this video. So much information I didn't know. Thank you. So much of the root bounding stuff made sense with a few of my plants I've noticed. I'm definitely gonna apply all these tips
My marigolds are self seeding from last year. I love marigolds, and they love our Arizona heat.
Thank you for the information ma'am. I am more educated now than before listening to you. 🙏
Always add marigolds to my gardens .👍❤️the video
Can't wait to try to grow these beautiful flowers!
I had no idea that marigolds are so useful as a pest repellant or that there are so many variations in color!! Excellent information on how to start from seeds!! Thanks for goring into so much detail!!❤
Great Instructions and real demos for marigolds! Taught me more than what I knew about these golden beauties!
We definitely made some classic newbie mistakes with our marigolds, but they self seeded and I have some seedlings sprouting in our raised bed, so I'm pretty excited about that!
As a newbie, I love this video! So much instruction and presents in a way that was precise, not too many big "plant people" words I don't understand and what I need to know!! You gave info for seed starter people and those that buy the plants from a nursery. Thank you. You need to do all beginner videos...plants and veggies.
We have lots but let us know if there are specific crops you're looking for
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany As a beginner, what flowers are good to start with. For vegetables which ones are good for beginners and how to start. I think most of us start too big. I think I want the basics: cucumber, tomatoes (the videos out there are too numerous and overwhelming), peppers, zucchini, onions and garlic.
I love Marigolds!!!!
Just found your video. I named my home the Marigold. Love those pretty blooms. MK
Yesss!!! MARIGOLDS are my favorite fall flower! They do so well in my SoCal yard.🤗🧡✨
This year I didn’t have to plant any marigold they are all over my garden and I love them 😍
Happened to me too!
I love the offering idea - beautiful! Thank you!
Love these flowers so so much
I Love marigolds. One of the reasons to not over crowd is that they have a massive root system.
Yes, great point!
Found that out by way of experience! Couldn’t believe how fast my seedlings got pot bound!
Great help for planting marigolds‼️👍🏽. I bought many last year. Saved the seeds now it will b do fun to watch them grow and bloom 💕. Hope to have enough for our families Altar to pay our respects for the ones who are not with us. I’m very sorry for your loss 😔
Thank you again🪴
Very glad I found your channel and this video. Super helpful. Really like you sharing the reasoning behind doing things a certain way as well. As a beginner gardener, my grown from seeds marigolds are doing super great (not blooming yet) and they MUST be very easy to grow as I am the Jon Snow of gardening. However, I see I am doing a lot of things incorrectly and your video taught me a ton. Thank You!
😂 well, you definitely know SOMETHING
One of the best gardening videos I’ve ever seen.. thank you 🙏
Thank you so much for these videos! Six months later and we are still loving the info ❤
I planted marigolds this spring in my little culinary garden. I am in zone 9b and it gets really hot and dry in the summer. I also started collecting the seeds from marigolds, African Daisy, and red bell pepper so far. So happy I came across your channel today! Thanks!
Very educational.. Thank you for such a complete video
Thanks so much for all your knowledge of growing these beautiful plants and flowers! 🤓
Thank you for the knowledge of what you've learned, am a first timer and trying to take more information and thanks to you you have told me a lot with this 1 video l want to thank you to cause you did'nt have to share with us and am glad you did, by the way my name is Herman Mason thank you again.
I planted a couple big beds with Marigolds this year using seed saved from several years ago. Rototilled N WI sand (soil), and spread the seed to fill the beds. Then I put fairly thick straw on top. As they grew I fertilized if the plant color wasn’t dark green with Miracle Grow hose distributor. I planted late so they’re just beginning to flower. Thank you for your help.
I love adding marigolds in my garden. They are so fun to grow!
OUTSTANDING. Thank You
Love Marigolds!!! Thank you!!! Live in San Marcos. Can't wait to plant them❤

Excellent, fun, and informative video on Marigold!!!!!❤❤❤
I've had great luck with marigolds this year. I just love your videos. You explain everything in a way that is easy to understand. Thank you!
Best marigold video by far! I think they are so common & people just think that everyone knows what to do. Thank you for such thorough information. Not only about marigolds but about gardening in general. ThNks again!!
🌱♥️
This was extremely helpful to just how to grow something in general, thanks for the video!!
So much good information I’m so happy I found this! Thank you
1:51 Thanks for this information. I have been reluctant to give up vegetable planting space for flowers but am learning how essential flowers are. I just planted Marogold and will use the info in this video!
Yay! It's tough but worth it. Somtimes you can squeeze in flowers where other veggies wouldn't fit too.
I have also planted many marigold plants in my terrace garden and it looks very beautiful🌺🌼
Very thorough and delightful to follow!
Wonderful video. One of the best to explain to beginners
They are so pretty in the garden!
My dad added some young marigolds leaves chopped up (like herbs) to his fresh summer salad with shallots and baked chicken breast. The smell is amazing.
This is the best gardening video I have ever watched, thank you!!❤
Thanks for sharing your knowledge 🙏
After spending too much on seed starter, I learned that taking potting soil over a 1/4” wire grid will remove all the mulch material from the soil. Then use the finer soil for seeds. Having good results w/ fine vermiculite sprinkling too.
Thanks for this thorough and educational video. A big help!
First time wanting to grow marigolds. Thank you for the info on them.
Our marigolds thrived this year from last years seeds tossed into the wildflower garden. I'm sure in large part to the gorgeous rainy season we had. The Monarch butterflies loved them and matched so much they were hard to tell apart. Harvested a ton of seeds yesterday. Thx for the tips!
Great tip about sifting the soil onto the top! Thanks!
Thank you for the tips and tricks! I have a new found appreciation for marigolds.
Love marigolds. Thanks
I absolutely love Marigolds!💛
I am so excited to be trying to grow marigolds from seeds I collected last year. Thanks for this helpful video!
I love the yellow-colored marigolds-a bunch of those show halfway down the block and make everyone happy!
I am growing marigolds from seeds for the first time! I hope they turn out. I started them in small cups in my windows and on my porch. I’m in southeast Texas
Thank you. You're very easy to listen to.
Thank you for all the great information!
This is just so helpful, thank you!

Love your trick of using sieve to put soil on top.
I'm trying my hand at seed starting for the first time this year, and this video was amazing, thank you so much!
I know it's been a bit at this point too, but condolences for the loss of your mom and dad. I'm sure they watched down and saw your amazing plants in your ofrenda and were so proud 💛
Thank you! Very informative!
