This was one of my favorite videos of yours. So real. Addressing real life issues. Even though I can not do very many succulents in my yard, I still soak up so much knowledge and joy from you. All my succulents are in pots so I can move them around. Love your channel! ❤

HAHAHAHA...funny you mentioned your lipstick. I was thinking "wow, she has lipstick on today". About adapting, my husband thinks gardening is once you place a plant that's where it stays. I move stuff all the time. We live in a "hostile" environment, zone 5 New England. I'm trying to work with what I can get to make a small, wonderful patch of succulents. First stage is done. Now for the "structure" part, rocks.

No way!! When i was a kid there was a cartoon on tv called “el jardín secreto” i guess it was based on that book you mentioned, i remember i was obsessed and created my own garden in the backyard of my grandparents between a palm tree an some citrus trees with some post i stealed from my grandpa 😅😅😅 and now more than 20 years later i have my own desert garden in my patio inspired by you !

YOU JUST MAKE ME HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love your place and it truly is a secret garden of delight for me who lives in hostile Utah (which I love ) BUT I can not have your plants. Sad day. Gardeners are special people that just GET each other, you know what I mean! I gave up the soft succulents-- ucky spider mites all the time all winter long indoors. Now I do aloes and semi mean or thorn less cactus that love me back. Thank-you so much for the joy you bring into my life!

For your Bakersfield client, I live in Bakersfield and have no problems growing succulents. In full sun, on the west and south fences, I have many types of aloe, crassula ovata, Blue chalk fingers, portulacaria afra, foxtail agave, octopus agave, stonecrop, yucca, carrion plant, and others. The more tender ones grow well under my lattice patio cover also on the west side.

Keep teaching your sensible and methodical techniques. They are much appreciated. I'm always learning stuff from you.

I am digging through 3/4” jade to get those little FLAT weeds. 🤨 I had a huge, old portulacaria in a clay pot and it got little pink flowers all over it 2 years in a row! I was so surprised. Now I have newer cuttings of it, no flowers. Love the Stephanotis- I had forgotten about that vine. Beautiful big little garden, Laura. Much Love 😘

I have salvaged/acquired several Crassula ovata that were reshaped into tall, open, bonsai-esque 3 to 4 foot tall specimens in 16 inch tall containers. Some highlight the exposed container and some are thriller/filler/spiller to blend in. Small flower show but always green and alway stop the eye then lead it down to lower plantings. Thanks for showing us your thought processes and changes along the way.
Your joy in your garden and your gardening is so obvious and inspiring! Thanks!

Laura, I also live in a very hot climate in Las Vegas. On a FB gardening page, there is a debate of how much watering we do on these continuously triple digit days. And should we ever get the actual plants wet, as some say that water causes them to brown in the sun because of the reflection. How true is that, and is that only true for non-cacti plants?? And how often should I water my plants like Golden barrels and Yuccas when it is so extremely hot? For example we recently had a 116° day!

Bougainvillea are great and all but the thorns are a pain!!! I live in Australia and we have one on our back fence which is partially for privacy and partially for security - it is big, thick and there's no way anyone would dare to climb over that fence!! Because our Bougainvillea is a lot thicker than yours it needs a good trim back fairly regularly and we use electric hedging tools to reach - but even then we need ladders.. I have walked down there (wearing crocs) after it's been cleaned up and had the thorns go right through to my feet!! ouchie!!!!

I planted 5 bougainvilleas last year and all but one dies. I did not know how to wire them up to my block wall as you mentioned. I am not handy with things like wires and screwdrivers and have no one around who is. Is there a UA-cam video that demonstrates how to do this? Also, the city of Las Vegas water company sent me a very threatening letter to only water once a week and that contributed to their death. So sad. They were gorgeous. I’d like to start over with Bougainvilleas. I love them! But I’m not going to do it until I figure out how to make them stand upright this time!

I’ve become opposed to bougainvillea in my own yard in the past… I love em but… messy messy messy… however, I’m composting in a new yard with absolutely no material growing readily available year round to add to the bin, so I’m now planting three of those guys along one of my prison walls … your prison wall is nice compared to mine. LOL… the flowers are nice in salads too

I have a bougainvillea at the very bottom of the back garden which gets NO WATER OTHER THAN WHAT COMES IN WINTER ! It blooms every so abundantly ! It is 35 years old and that may have something to do with it.

I live in the Phoenix area where it's brutally hot through the summer, as you know. Agaves and Cati do well in the extreme temps, but a lot of the cutesy types (echeveria, sedums, graptos, etc.) just kill over once our 110+ degree days kick in. I've had better luck keeping them shaded, but I still lose a lot in the summer and am not really sure about watering. Unless we get monsoon rain, we don't really "cool down" in the summer, so I'm not sure if I should wait all summer or just water at night or give them less than I normally would? Or do I need to face the fact that some of these are just winter annuals in my area? 😆

so keeping with your "adapt" philosophy", I was thinking of planting some of my agave pups where i can enjoy them right now even though in 3-4 years they may be too big (I'm thinking of the americana variegata...) Is this a bad idea? Everyone is saying don't plant too close together, but then it doesn't look good for a couple of years...(I'm 68, in southeastern Spain) Anyone ever done a"puppy" garden and then transplanted when bigger?

Can anyone tell me what's the large light green aeoniums at the center bottom between sunburst at 3:56? Laura said it is dinner plate but I looked up the pictures and it looks to me that the leaves of dinner plate aroniums are very small and fuzzy unlike those large and smooth leaves Laura has. This has puzzle me for a year since I saw them under the palm tree at Laura's front yard over a year ago. Thanks!
