- This is part of a series: The Long Game is a collaboration with Hennessy, exploring the impact, benefits, and risks of long-term thinking.
We talked to Douglas Vakoch, President of METI (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence), about sending messages toward star systems light years away, initiating interstellar communications that could span generations, and challenging our mindset about vast time scales.
did you ask the public permit to do so. what if they get the signal and then come to exploit or to harm us?
Great!
Years ago my computer worked on the SETI @ HOME program but, after its termination, the question was whether the alien intelligence would not communicate with us with digital signal modulation and why not with laser communications.
Light travels the largest space in the space with the least energy loss, maybe it is most promising with a huge laser beam to emit a signal to the Beta Centeur or the Orion galaxy?
The lack of "guards" in the galactic "zoo" does not prove the lack of reason outside the ground ...
if I can, I wish this message be delivered and or returned to and from Doug Vakoch.
We are able to communicate instantly it doesn’t take four years
Cool job
20 000 years later ... "Hey, did you send us a message?" - "Don't know! WTF! Can't remember" .... and let's say that's the best possible outcome
I think the only reason to send the message NOW is that you're not sure you can send it later. Thought meaningless but still a footprint in universe 🙄
50 000 years later ... "Hey, why did you f* use infix notation? If not for infix notation we would have replied earlier." ......
it sounds great but what if you contact the wrong ones? Some Intergalactic psychos with insecurity issues hit the frappe' button for earth because you want to set up some sort of Intergalactic blockchain email. We all made plans, why screw that up? I'm willing to bet that any would be life-form that has the skill sets to go hyper jumping across galaxies would want to contact us only if the conversation would have been interesting, I gotta feeling it's going to be a little one-sided if they ever make contact. We're not looking too Swift lately to anyone who happens to be looking our way. We are not batting a hundred that's all I'm saying.
Hello.
We will be fine.....
We got nukes!
Good luck.
