I really enjoyed the movie up until the last 20 minutes. However, I think Demi Moore’s deserves an academy award for her portrayal of Elizabeth Sparkle.
Watched it last night. What a shocker! I had to walk out of the room in the shrimp part, so I didn't punch a hole in my laptop. I have never felt my body be so repelled by something in my entire life
I didn't find it all that gorey. As a 60 year old male, I took a slightly different meaning. Young people are more valued by society and old people have less to do and have fewer friends. The Demi Moore character is kind of stuck at home even before her appearance begins to change. The scene in the diner with the old man kind of drives it home. Overall, it's good but not great. I saw where it was going so I was never really surprised.
By today's standards it's really good. It has some great moments and an interesting story. I am 51 and noticed that Demi's character could not do a normal relationship with that date from high school. She wanted the top billing. If she had some humility it would have saved her.
It's so untrue that old people have less to do, and if they do they make it that way. I'm 61 and have a very exciting life. I'm a journalist and a public speaker. I'm very active in my career, go out three nights a week with my husband (either career related or just for fun), I work out regularly and just this year met a few new friends. (Sadly, some of my favorite ones passed away). I'm going to see The Substance today and watched all the spoilers. It has a vibe of the 1950 movie "Sunset Boulevard" where the Gloria Swanson character was from the silent film era and still believed she was a big star, but never made it when the "talkies" came out. She turned 50 and she was planning the big "comeback" of her career. She was delusional one way, thinking of herself as larger than life, whereas Demi Moore's character seems more insecure of herself even though she's SMOKING HOT! I think that's the punchline of the movie, how women don't see themselves as wonderful as they are. As Nadia said, even young women are insecure. (In my case I was MORE insecure when I was young! I developed confidence over the years and couldn't be happier at 61). In addition to this being a horror story, it's a psychological thriller. I'm going to love it, I know it!
@BeYounique...Maryanne When Demi was dressed for dinner and kept messing up her makeup in the mirror and changing her outfit, I felt bad for her. She couldn't accept herself and her date would have been so happy if she showed up. She chose misery because even if she called him, she could have made some human connection. She was in her own personal hell and she would not let herself out.
I don't even hear anyone talking about it, but can't wait to see it. Seems like this year the best films are getting very little hype and short runs in the theater.
SPOILERS!!! 1. Nice yellow jacket. I see what you did there. 2. I saw it earlier today, at an early showing. Only a few people in the audience. I think I was the only one laughing throughout the film at the few funny parts. (And the end especially) I need to see it again in a full theater. 3. Demi Moores best film!!! 4. Randy Quaid plays the PERFECT sleazeball! 5. Margaret Qualley was phenomenal! 6. The most unbelievable moment, (besides the toplesss dancers on a new year's eve network show), was in the final scene when the face of elisabeth is on her Hollywood star, and she looks up, there's palm trees, and you can see all the stars in the sky. In a major city.
Great review! I'm going to see it later today. I love spoilers because I like to anticipate what's coming. (At concerts, I'm the opposite, I want to hear the new songs and be surprised when I'm there). Anyway, it's endearing how young people think 61 year-olds aren't mobile. I'm 61 and just got done working out, including planks. You'll totally be FINE at 61, just take care of yourself, exercise, eat clean as possible, be happy, don't smoke, and don't do anything you really don't want to do -- that's the secret. ❤
What I liked about this film is how it treats women as adults. At the moment a filthy rich Elizabeth chooses to take the substance you see her in her villa, rich, famous, beautiful at 50, unhappy as fuck. In the meanwhile a younger overweight anonymous woman is cleaning her house behind her. You see her throwing away everything she has while ignoring a woman right behind her that never had any of it. There are no innocents in this film. Great acting and very vulnerable part for Moore to play.
loved the film. I agree it is a career best performance by Demi, but genre (especially horror) films do not fare well in Oscars. However, the performance by Dennis Quaid may get a supporting actor nod, the sound design may get an Oscar nod and the make-up should WIN an Oscar. Overall one of my favorite movies this year. As was Strange Darling btw!
Please like this comment and tell me what you thought of it. I know a lot of people do it and a lot of people must be wrong. I don't know why someone would like a video they didn't watch yet. This belongs at a point where the most of the video is over. If you assume people are not watching till the end, what are the chances of these same people subscribing to a creator they only saw an introduction of? The best possible outcome of the early reminders is people tolerating it and not leaving immediately.
Subbed for your count, commenting for the algo, not sure if im gonna stay for the spoilers since I'm super hyped and might see it. But shout out to smaller channels
I very much enjoyed the movie. spoiler: I just wanna point out that it wasn't Sue who goes on stage at the New Year's party; it is specifically Monstro Elisasue. For some reason, to me, the fact that Monstro Elisasue gets her own nameplate on the screen (just the way Elisabeth Sparkle and Sue did before her) really individualizes her. She says stuff like "Don't be scared" and "I'm still me" (before spraying blood everywhere). So like, since the substance makes a "better version" of you, I felt like Monstro Elisasue was the best version. She was "horrific" to look at but only wanted to be loved by the people around her. I weirdly loved Monstro Elisasue and wished that she had more time in the world to exist and find her place. Okay, weird rant over.
Overyhyped? Hell no! This is the type of movie that I wish we saw more of. Unfortunately, it'll most likely tank at the box office. Nevertheless, it's my favorite film of the year.
I won’t be forgetting this movie anytime soon. A bona fide horror movie-no cheap theatrics or crappy jumpscares, heck, it’s not even the gorefest people claim it to be, but a genuinely unsettling watch with an insanely good execution. The absurdist setting of the movie fits the cheesy (and very predictable) plot to a tee. Every element screams out ‘uncomfortable’ and it just progressively gets worse, and worse, and worse. The pacing and the overall setting reminds me of ‘Beau is Afraid’, but more exaggerated, which says a lot, considering that movie is already very absurdist. This just goes to show how great execution can make any horror movie, no matter the plot, go from a boring watch to something diabolical. Easy 9/10
How can a sex-ploitaion film effectively do battle with…sex-ploitation? How can actresses who radically conform to beauty standards (via plastic surgery) be integral exemplars for young women? Why would any integral actress participate in, and promote, a sex-ploitation/Roman Colloseum flick? Will this movie stop women of all ages, from the natural desire, of wanting to appear beautiful in public? Will a sexy girl running around in her underwear make viewers think differently about sexual assault?
I went in knowing nothing, so it's not over hyped. Whoever is in charge of marketing is dropping the ball imo. I'm not mad about it, it's kinda how I went into see Late Night with the Devil, all I knew about that was it was set in the 70s and the basic premise. Anyway, this is a great movie imo and it really makes ya happy with what you have.
@@horrorwithnads honestly, it didn’t keep me into it at all, the most disgusting part for me was when her boss was eating the crawfish 🤮maybe I expected too much after hearing everybody raving about it but I just didn’t find it good in the least bit, I watched it with my wife and a couple of friends and everyone agreed it was kinda trash. I agree with you on the whole crawfish scene that was definitely the most disgusting part and you’re correct to each their own. Everybody likes different things but thank you for commenting on my video.

So glad I saw this on the big screen. It's really a film all horror fans should see. An essential body horror classic.
I really enjoyed the movie up until the last 20 minutes. However, I think Demi Moore’s deserves an academy award for her portrayal of Elizabeth Sparkle.
Was expecting a lot from this movie and it started reasonably enough but the ending was ridiculous

Way better than Longlegs which was overhyped. Kept going crazier and crazier as it went along.

I think most body-horror things (like The Fly) you can see where it's going before it gets there. Still good though.
@transamination Oh, when the finger went rotten, that was the sign this was going bad. I would have stopped immediately.

The substance
Terrifier 3
Cuckoo
Long legs
Immaculate

It is 100 percent overrated. And its ideas are as subtle and repetitive as a jackhammer.
