This is such a beautiful song. I always think of my mom in the line 'You always said I never missed a note.' I love my mom so much and this song always makes me think of how great she is to me.
All he ever wanted was to be sent to live with his uncle, the only person he could relate to and who he felt safe with and unconditionally accepted by.
Also thank you so much for the music. It's a fascinating song - a beautiful melody juxtaposed with chilling words. Singer/songwriter Dave Matthews gives a truly memorable performance. His intriguingly calm and soothing voice belies the horror of the cold and callous words.
this song makes me cry... reminds me of a hard time in my life. i watched that movie "joshua" and looked for that song on the internet... that movie is a masterpiece but so sad and disturbing.
Was the song written for the film? It fits so perfectly with the plot and Joshua's plight. At the end of the film, as Joshua sings, it appears that his uncle is beginning to see Joshua's true nature.
I Love This song,I just found out about it today,1/7/08 and the dvd.I cant wait to see the movie.I love The Dave Matthews Band and i have seen them live 6 times and they just get better with time.I was real excited when i saw the trailer and i will be buying it asap
We watched the movie Joshua where this song was played.. The kid in the movie was damn strange indeed, BUT, the parents had a very big part in creating what Joshua had become.
In the movie the titular character Joshua sings this after he effectively gets rid of both of his parents (made his mom go insane and had his dad get arrested by pushing him to abuse him in public) he sings this to his Uncle who he wanted to be with all along. It's about how Joshua never wanted to be with his parents and only his Uncle understood him.
What I got from it was that the mother had serious post partum when he was born which wasa evident from the home videos that he watched of himself when he was a baby. The mother and father didn't give him the attention that he desperately needed, even in the beginning when they were on their way to the hospital the father ran across the street without even checking that his son was by his side... i think Joshua just needed the love that wasn't given to him so he acted out and didnt understand
how awesome it is to hear a gem this rare though i love that these types of songs are kinda hidden from mainstream, isn't that the whole reason "mainstream" was termed, where those who care not r distracted while those who do reap the o so ripe benefits
To me it's like that fable of the scorpion hitching a ride on the frog's back and then stinging the frog to death. It's his nature. In this case Joshua is the scorpion.
High all..it may not interest you at all, but i love Dave Matthews and this was a great song ..I made that video for the game skate 2..i get this depressing and lonely vibe from the song and tried to film the skating like i was alone..i know it's dumb, but i'm old and can't really skate..so i live out my skating dreams on xbox..anyway enjoy it or not..its still a great dave tune!
Seems to me that when the Lily was born, his parents were more involved in their own thing (work, raquetball, telling him to be quiet) so at the end he told his uncle that he loves Lily more than anything. Either he really was psychotic or he wanted her to grow up in a better environment. The guinea pig and grandma would make you think psychotic.
Maybe it more of what the parents Did Not Do. He was in obvious internal pain when he threw up or passed out at the recital. They did not give him any recognition for existing. They even let a 9 year old walk the city streets by himself. Joshua ended up taking care of the situation his own way.
Prolly not the case. He was raised in a stable enviroment, and upon the baby this wasn't what he was surrounded by. He more than likely viewed his uncle as a stable person and went for it.
Because the song was never released on any album or such and I recorded it with a stereo cable dicertly from my dvd-player. Yet, why complain? Download the song for good quality (this is youtube after all) or buy the movie and record the song yourself.
The kid needed more attention and love, as well as nurturing in playing the piano which his uncle Ned did, thats why he decided to get rid of his parents, but the way he drove them crazy, that was really sad.
Yes. the kid was deranged, that's for sure. But I saw that he was neglected too. Recall when he viwed the video and his mother was always freaked becuz Joshua was cryin all the time. Josh interpreted that as he was not loved so he wanted the baby to cry alot too cuz he was afraid of being further isolated. She was not a good mother to him when he was a baby. The father obviously ended up abusing him. I recall in one scene that Josh told them he loved them. His parents just sat there mute.
@Kirschmaoam no because his uncle is his mum's brother, they wouldn't of slept together? i felt so sorry for the father in that film. was slightly twisted.
Some things hardly makes sense unless you think of a child doing just about anything for his parents to notice him (going "I want to be born again !") and being inconsistent as kids are prone to be. I gather the psychologist jumped on the "fathers are inherently evil anyway" (actually pretty much fashionable in pop fiction nowadays). Oh, and until then, I though Dave Matthews was some mellow easy listening stuff. Shows how much I know !!!!
Does anyone kow where I can either view the end clip of Joshua or hear the kid singing this song at the end? I love this song in any version but I have this one and need the other to make the pair.
@goofyjr I still don't understand it. (Sorry for bad English ;d) He had sort off a bruise or something. Did his father did that? I mean that scene where he's crying under the piano? I thought it was a fantastic movie, but I wont understand all of it
Hope there's still people that view this cause I just watched the movie today with my fiance. I understood the point of the drawings and his jealousy of his sister but not so much the mummification part. First his little stuffed animal and then near the end with his guinea pig. Did the psychologist not see that? Or maybe Joshua did it after she had left? I don't know but it feels like they just kinda threw that in there. But if anyone knows the significance of it, please let me know.
joshua was so freaking evil omg I WANT PRT 2.. OF THE MOVIE I WANNA KNOW WHAT HAPPEND NEXT CAUSE THATS THE SCARYEST THING FOR A BOY TO DO TO HIS PARENTS.
Joshua was the best film ever!!!
This is such a beautiful song. I always think of my mom in the line 'You always said I never missed a note.'
I love my mom so much and this song always makes me think of how great she is to me.
the song is better than the movie.
What a sad movie. :(
Funny how sometimes you can go months or even years without hearing a song you love . then it just reawakens you. :)
Seth Burgmeier I hear that! that's one of the amazing things about music!
All he ever wanted was to be sent to live with his uncle, the only person he could relate to and who he felt safe with and unconditionally accepted by.
the last scene in the movie, where the kid sings this song, is super creepy though
Wish they would add this to Spotify!
Also thank you so much for the music. It's a fascinating song - a beautiful melody juxtaposed with chilling words. Singer/songwriter Dave Matthews gives a truly memorable performance. His intriguingly calm and soothing voice belies the horror of the cold and callous words.
Just finished watching Joshua and still creeped out! what a chilling film... :x

Dave wrote this song for the movie, It might get released one day.
this song is so weird, but I love it.. its addicting
i love Dave, especially when he gets darker and more introspective with his writing. But holy shite, I think I may slit my wrists!!
i like this
yeah its is. i need to watch the movie.
This song makes me wonder how many more years I have to be alive. Maybe I shouldn't be listening to this. I don't know.
To me it's like that fable of the scorpion hitching a ride on the frog's back and then stinging the frog to death. It's his nature. In this case Joshua is the scorpion.
The movie "Joshua" could've easily been a prequel to "American Psycho". The character of Joshua was practically Patrick Bateman at age 10.
Movie song. wow. do like the song. i so forgot this song. many can relate to it inmany ways i am sure,, an grow strong in hopes for all's sake
Thak you for the link , i like song
good deal, thanks

i really love this song... its totally different to what i normally listen to (Slipknot, Bring me the horizon) but i love it soooooo much... !
Maybe it more of what the parents Did Not Do.

when he sings this song at the end it is very creepy, look for him in those dark cold corners of your house.
i just watched that movie.......and that kid wasnt as crazy as the kid from "the good son"
The kid needed more attention and love, as well as nurturing in playing the piano which his uncle Ned did, thats why he decided to get rid of his parents, but the way he drove them crazy, that was really sad.

@Kirschmaoam no because his uncle is his mum's brother, they wouldn't of slept together? i felt so sorry for the father in that film. was slightly twisted.

Do you think, the uncle is joshua's father?
Sry for my "english" ;)
File not found...
Tsic...i really want this music..
All he fly wonders is whats happening to it, not the cause.
Just him
@Kirschmaoam no that was the moms brother. he wanted to be with the uncle i think because he wanted more attention that his parents didnt give him
@goofyjr I still don't understand it. (Sorry for bad English ;d)

the "they should've saved themselves" comment is profoundly disturbing.
i really can't find this song anywhere. i really wanna download it =(
It's just cause he paid attention to him
joshua was so freaking evil omg I WANT PRT 2.. OF THE MOVIE I WANNA KNOW WHAT HAPPEND NEXT CAUSE THATS THE SCARYEST THING FOR A BOY TO DO TO HIS PARENTS.
so okay does anyone else think that its weird that his uncle just sat there and let joshua just sing this song...?
lol
gr8
the glove... he was killing the animals and he used the glove to "re-stuff" them. he also did ALL of that JUST to live with his uncle.
