  • Alex Knost is a surfer, musician and photographer and definitely one of the most polarising figures in modern surfing.
For some, he’s the arty-party epitome of hipster surfing who is all style and no substance.
To others, he’s a genuine original who has managed the miraculous feat of achieving a totally original and cohesive style at this late stage in surfing’s development.
Wherever you stand, he’s one of the most enigmatic and interesting presences in modern surfing, and in this occasionally combative interview I tried to get to the bottom of the Knost conundrum.

ABOUT THE LOOKING SIDEWAYS ACTION SPORTS PODCAST
Presented by Matt Barr, Looking Sideways is a podcast about skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing and other related endeavours. I also make Type 2 with Patagonia Europe.
For years, I asked myself the question: 'I wonder why there isn't a decent, ad-free action sports podcast'. So I decided to start one myself.

i think of his surfing as performance art / modern dance .. the guy is too talented for 99.9% of people to understand, let alone appreciate .. great interview.

Great interview! Surfing at it's absolute best exhibits undiluted individuality on the wave. Alex embodies that.

This is obviously years removed and of zero importance, but I do want to say that I truly believe he is being genuine. I can totally relate to the discomfort of being made a topic of conversation while you’re just trying to do your own thing. I am nobody, you are nobody, Alex Knost is nobody. We’re all just people trying to find things that make us happy and not step on anyone’s feet along the path.
I agree with the dangerous aspect of social media and this “everyone’s important” attitude that we’re living in. Its like the public edit tab on Wikipedia - everyone is available to comment and insert their expert opinion. Here I am, doing just that.
You offer a glimpse into a person’s life who is only a familiar figure in the minds of a small minority, and yet his personal trip incites controversy. Its an anomaly. Much like your friend’s comment - to the people who hate him, he’s still mesmerizing. Everyone wants to believe its posing because they secretly wish they had escaped the cookie cutter. Envy is the enemy and everyone is suffering.
This contented nobody enjoyed the episode.
*I am not now, nor have I ever been affiliated with the Knost organization.

Great interview. Alex is such a steez lord. He’s on his own trip and clearly doesn’t give a f#%k what anyone thinks about what he’s doing. More power to him. He’s following his path. And doing it with style. Love it or hate it. He owns it.

Knost's reference to Dylan was spot on and wasn't ill-advised. He could have fed you a line of shit, but was nice to you because you are making a honest effort to put something out there for people. You appear to have a loose grasp on Dylan - but I'll let is slide because you worked to put this interview out - thank you.

Yeah I thought the Dylan ref was just the best way to describe a potential way of dealing with media rather than a comparative thing at all. Thought the whole thing was great btw. Really refreshing 👍

Good one! Dylan - and the Beatles, for that matter - were eager to deconstruct the "fan"- phenom ritual, and played the interviewers with 60's Prankster/Yippie ironic sarcasm (which the Monkees made a core schtick). By contrast, here Knost is careful to be thoughtful and generous, insofar as you were also, and the result was a fun and interesting interview that didn't depend on controversy to be successful.
