I have an unusual question about Kappa, is there anything in The books about Yokai about what happens to a kappa if the water in their head bowl freezers?
There’s after all that whole thing of what happens if they lose the water in their head bowl but nothing about if it becomes ice.
Just one of those curious questions to pops into peoples heads.

13:00 huh....you know in Greek Mythology Hephaestus is the God of smithing, and when he was born his mother Hera, in some myths Zeus, through him from Olympus and when he hit the ground he became lame as both his legs were broken. And during his Smithing, his assistants are the cyclopes, who many believe are meant to be reference to the fact that in Ancient Greece blacksmiths wore a leather eye patch because safety goggles and welding masks did not exist yet, so that should the worst happen and they get a piece of molten shrapnel in their eye, they would still be able to see. Huh you ever notice that certain aspects of mythologies seem to always repeat in different cultures? Like how some scholars think that the tale of the Orochi is directly influenced by the story of Heracles and the Hydra.

Don’t forget Nordic/Germanic traditions when Odin/Woden gouged his eye out at the roots of Yggdrasil where the met the pool of knowledge to attain knowledge of everything and wisdom to use it, thus becoming the god of wisdom. Forcibly loosing ones eye and wisdom seem to be universal in our species.

I'm on the autism spectrum - a non-visible disability in some sense - and I can vouch for that referring to seeing things differently or somehow understanding things differently. Personally I wouldn't trade my supposed "disability" in dealing with social settings for my ability to focus intensely for long periods, collect deep knowledge about specific topics, or notice things before other people because my eyesight and hearing are more sensitive for anything.
Even then some people seem to think "Oh wow you've got Asperger's? You must be so wise/creative/interesting..." Like fam, I just wanna live my life and be treated like a normal person. What is it with people thinking we're somehow special or empowered because we happen to have extra hurdles in life or difficulties with certain things? It's not like life is a video game where we chose hard mode for fun...

Whenever you bring up the fact that the only difference between Kami and Yokai is whether or not the entity is being worshiped by Humans or not, I keep remembering how in Scottish Faerie Lore, the Fae are divided into Seelie and Unseelie Courts, with the former being mostly benevolent (but still dangerous) and the latter being malevolent. Cultural parallels abound.

Very interesting and nice work! You got me interested in the series. By the way, about Kappa (河童/かっぱ), I think that the name, Gataro (ガタロウ/河太郎), is a specific first name for a Kappa, not the other/regional name for Kappa in general. 河太郎 can be read as Kawa-tarou, and that is one of many names for Kappa. (Kappa came from Kawa-Wappa (河童), meaning a river-child, and Kawa-tarou (河太郎) has almost same meaning.)

When that dangerous looking kappa appeared on screen during the "yokai cultural whiplash" sequence, I randomly sang out "Ka-ppaaaaaaaaaa!" like I was in a kabuki reminiscent comedy sequence. This In/Spectre thing reminds me of The Ancient Magus' Bride mixed with GeGeGe no Kitaro, considering the focuses on the 'romance between a physically vulnerable, yet extremely magical girl and a socially awkward guy' and the 'yokai living life with humans, and humans are the real monsters' plot types. Yup, here's looking at you "Moe is a toxic culture." video, still one of my favorites from this channel with a yokai focus.

Hmm, the idea of eyes = wisdom shows up in other cultures too. Odin from Norse myth makes the same deal, trading his eye for Wisdom.
Then there is also the Third Eye/Wisdom Eye/Buddha Eye, the "All Seeing Eyes" of Helios, Heimdall, and Christianity/Luminati and finally Thoth, the Egyptian god of Wisdom fixing Horus' left eye. I wonder if the one leg idea shows up as well...

The main female character of the series, having only one eye, because she needed to sacrifice the other to become a "God of Wisdom" is also a subtle reference to western culture, even if it wasn't intended, is also a nod to Odin of the Norse mythos, where in one version of his tale, sacrificed his eye so he could drink from a well of knowledge and granted him "All worldly knowledge" and is part of the reason "Wisdom" is one of his dominions in that pantheon.

Considering that the Manga(at least) deals with modern supernatural incidents, like the creation of a Pinocchio with the ability to use lightning, a Guillotine turned Tsukumogami being used in a murder and Kojin Nanase(who is the main story of season 1 at least), punctuated by Kotoko clarifying that her position as 'god of their wisdom' is to quote; "Maintain the balance between the natural and super natural worlds", you'll be gettin lots of Yokai references and appearances while the Yokai themselves are not the focus, like the Komainu, Kodama and Gashadokuro. Its still a well written series and worth a read.

When it comes to the Hyosube, it reminds me of the hormone monster from Big mouth, the difference is, there's no horn.

In you want something else to check out, try Shuriken Sentai Ninninger. The ninja aspect of it might not be top tier and warrant a thrashing with a Which Ninja, but the use of Yokai and connecting them to more mundane objects and well as some Yokai being connected to the generals and treating Western Monsters as a class of Yokai, there might be a few things for you to tear into.

And here I thought that the one eye thing was a reference to Oden of Norse mythology.

Hey GG! I just started watching Mushi-shi and I was curious of any insight you had to Mushi and Yokai. I'm curious if they're the same or not.

It may have a cliche romance attached, but I'm intrigued by this yokai-heavy anime.

Long time ago I had a drawing magazine, special vampires. And I remember a Asian vampire (Chinese / Japanese, can't remember) and had one of the best designs I had seen for a monster: Snake hair, like Medusa, a big mouth full of sharp fangs IN THE HEAD and their eyes are located were should be their Jaws.

I have tried and failed to get a copy of that magazine or just the name of that vampire. So I figured out that this could be a good place to search for help.

    1:59 - Well that's boring.
    2:12: - More boring.
    2:25 - Bored...
2:37 - Ah! Here we go.
In all honesty, I'm a little curious about this series now, myself.

Any chance you can do some kind of analysis of "Oda Cinnamon Nobunga"? I have been noticing a good few cultural and historical referrances. They even gave the hyrogan recipe.

Goomba after seeing that YuGiOh card, I think you would like the Mayakashi cards/archatype that came out recently on Yugioh duel links, it's basically a yoki deck. like Tengu, The Winged Mayakashi, and Oboro-Guruma, The Wheeled Mayakashi for example

The girl is a cute but sassy and confident. Its just so refreshing from the usual moe blob archetypes-you know that feeling that she just exists to get YOUR rocks off. The girl just feels like a real fucking person with agency. In fact I'm seeing a significant improvement in the writing of anime and manga recently. People that grew up with the usual tired tropes also felt my fatigue and began actually improving on it and evolving the genre.

There is a show called Shuriken Sentai ninninger , a super sentai about ninjas, where all the monsters are yokai. Do you think you will ever do one of these on that?

    • @RokuroCarisu

Kamen Rider and Ninninger (all of Super Sentai for that matter) are seperate shows. They just do crossovers on occasion.
