i don't think anyone knows how to write fem characters-- even with the "plot twist" of wanting joc and tedros to BOTH be manipulative and fucked up, it fell really flat

There was no plot twist in the idol if you call the last episode a plot twist then I would love some of the shit you smoked. That’s literally what everyone problem with the show is that it left a lot of storylines open and never really furthered the plot. So how was there plot twist when we all knew Jocelyn was the main manipulator the whole time. You learned this on like the 3rd episode if you used your brain for a couple seconds and not mindlessly watched what you seen on the screen. If you really watched movies and shows that use a lot of foreshadowing or interpretation you wouldn’t be calling that a plot twist at all. That’s like you saying big worm tryna kill Smokey was a plot twist 😂

I think Sam Levinson deserves ALL of the backlash and reasonable side eyes he's getting, however I will also say The Weekend deserves it too. Like, to the full extent. He had a massive hand in it and I have genuinely no idea how it's just Levinson getting all the backlash and not both of them for being creepy as hell.

The whole intimacy coordinator and the “rider” (the agreement to not be fully nude) is a contract and list of demands that the ENTERTAINER or in this case person being photographed sends to the VENDOR. This also is something done between entertainers and music venues. Its what they want the venue/vendor to agree to. So the fact that jocelyn and the team were trying to fight it makes NO FUCKING SENSE. They are the ones who write it up and send it out. So theres no reason why jocelyn/management should be trying to fight with this coordinator about it?? Its what they would have demanded in a contract. So stupid.
Also doesn't make sense with how they want to keep her "commercially bad girl" reputation. If they want her to be commercial for teen girls, why would they want shots that wouldn't be published in any commercial magazine because of full frontal nudity?

Sam levinsion thinks he’s being provocative and edgy with the absurd and sophomoric arguments about how suffering = good art. As if you can just pinpoint how to get inspiration .. you have to be abused so that you suffer and then your art has some kind of direct line to the way art is manifested. The segment in the episode where they talk about Robert plant disgusted me too. Oh his son died and it made good art. As if great art can’t be made because someone is happy? All art is some kind of misery machine? This show really has its head up it’s own a** on top of just being a flat out terrible show

i genuinely believe that part of the script was from the original run with the female director and the weekend just came in and edited shit in a way that made him able to creep on / harm other characters with no regard to the rest of the plot. it would explain why Jocelyn’s manager father figure guy was so weird towards the intimacy coordinator but did a 180. id put money down that the original script showed the coordinator in a better light that sam and abel didn’t like, so they changed it without editing the rest of his characteristics in later scenes. i think it would explain a lot about the “twist” in Jocelyn’s character. they saw a chance to paint a woman as a master manipulator instead of a genuine abuse victim

Tbh because of them using AI and blatantly ripping off of Dave Mckeans work (he is a DC artist and has done all of the sandman covers as well as Arkham asylum) for the intro it’s best that we all ignore it and call it out for that and then let it die. It shows Disney that if they decide to use AI we won’t even give it a chance (plus they would give it watch hours which we don’t want)
I feel like the whole intimacy coordinator scene is just a reflection of what Levinson thinks of this role on set and it couldn't have been a bigger ick and more of a red flag. It's like he's saying "see how stupid they are" and expecting everyone to agree 🚩🚩🚩

I said to my friends that the only thing that I liked about the show was the "skeleton", like the idea of the show taking off the plot twist, then I watched this video and I realized that I think that I liked what the show was originally going to be about lol. It would've been so much better, like the story of a pop star who falls into a cult of a manipulative psychopathic pimp and then is able to scape and rescue the rest of the artists, but not make her the villain, like wtf is that.

It does save lots of time! I’d rather just hear the reviews from creators I enjoy. I’ve already seen so many reviews of this one, I could’ve watched this garbage three times, but 🤮.
I believe that The Idol did have some potential to be good. However, I noticed that the show mostly relied on the shock factor, because to Sam Levinson that is somehow good writing when it isn't. The shock factor can work for tv, but it has to connect to the story, not simply just be there. Also, there's a lot that I have a problem with the show, but my main problem with it is the unnecessary shock factor and the whole show does not make any sense whatsoever.

Your comments about the Jocelyn character made me think that the reason her character was inconsistent was because it is a femal character written by 2 men. Then you said more and more characters were inconsistent and then I realized that all the characters were just written by 2 incompetent men.
Her character was never in consistent . It seemed inconsistent because a lot of people went into the show with their own plot and idea of the character.

Shorter Kings can be intimidating. As bad as The Blacklist with time gets, Raymond Reddington played by James Spader could be very intimidating because he almost never got angry. He was calm, smiling, making jokes in scenes where you didn´t know what would happen next. He exuded control even in situations were he was imprisoned or in danger. Of course James Spader is a seasoned actor and apart from me personally thinking he is very charismatic and attractive with that godamn smooth voice of his, he of course is written that way. They could have done that bt the writing was so shitty. Calm demeanor and voice impress me most in villains or antagonists. Mads Mikkelsen portrayal of Hannibal was another good example of someone being manipulative in a consistent and effective way.
But Abel? Nope.......he just looked pathetic and if he wasn´t such a petty little cringy crybaby I would feel sorry that his passion project fell flat but damn, he is unlikable.
All these inconsistencies drove me crazy and I worked my way through the series. There was not really any set up for the twist or any decent coherence considering characters and their interpersonal relationships. Leia made the most sense - glad she got out.
Destiny was at least entertaining, because the actress played her well and she is just charismatic again.
Troy is a good actor but how he got from tortured to happy playing along to Tedros plans was beyond me. Tedros had zero cult leader charisma vibes. Nothing made sense.
The Basic Instinct homage in the background was laughable because Levinson is no Verhoeven.
Sorry, the series just really frustrated me. I actually would have preferred just to watch the side characters.

some nerd history from someone that has performed an IC role on set: The intimacy coordinator role is a new mandated role by unions post #metoo movement. It was not previously required but was heavily encouraged for shows with nudity, but those networks were also severely under regulated due noo need to cater to advertisers. Nowadays, intimacy coordinators are just another PA level person onset typically. They are pretty severely under respected by most In Charge people that work in the industry because their literal job is to prevent exploitation, based on my experience. Something I’ve also witnessed is for scandalous photo shoots (like more editorial ones) celebrities will bring their own intimacy advocate. This is typically their manager or PR person to be honest. like I totally agree with the take that this show can’t be a satire because they don’t ever make the joke, but at the beginning of the show I really thought it was gonna be a successful satire because the scene was so over the top with the intimacy coordinator that I was like thinking they were representing how they’re treated. But instead they were representing how much they hate them and they did so accurately. so take that information about what people like Sam Levinson and the Weeknd think of not exploiting female celebrities
To me there is something so disgusting and nefarious about this "twist" that was decided upon. Aside from messing up the plot of the story and making no sense, it also directly contradicts the initial message that was supposedly intended - to highlight how women in hollywood and those types of circles can often be taken advantage of by powerful men and the types of abuse that women experience in the industry. If this was the message then how exactly is it put across by the woman being the bad guy out of nowhere? It is absolutely disgusting that this film was taken away from a female director for having "too much of a female perspective" and was rewritten to be the most male gaze bs which sexualises violence and abuse against women and then has the audacity to make the woman the villain by the end of it all.
I couldn't even finish it. Awful.

there's actually a setting that will allow you to screenshot/screen record on streaming services, at least on google chrome, i think it's advanced rendering or something like that? and then when you turn it off the shots don't turn black anymore.
one thing that consistently bugs me throughout media, especially in shows like this is the blatant over-sexualization of everything. i could barely make it through 2 episodes without getting frustrated at all the unnecessary nudity and “violent” sexual/sex scene in general. the concept of the show was phenomenal honestly , i loved to see a more inside and personal look at the industry, especially for women. i was disappointed at the amount of uncomfortable scenes and violence in the sexual scenes.
a couple notes about the acting/writing , i think for abel’s character, if he was trying to portray an unsettling, manipulative character then he did a phenomenal job - i was pretty uncomfortable when he was on screen which is either bad acting or good writing. it can be difficult to write an unsettling character or a character that is hard to read.
for jos , i think her character lacked depth but i also see her being extremely dissociated and out of it for most of the show. she seems backed up with a lot of emotions that she hasn’t or wasn’t able to process - which would line up with her breakdowns and otherwise spacey personality.
(mind you i only made it through those 2 episodes before getting extremely frustrated with the show)
I watch the idol out of curiosity, and all that I can say is the entire show looked like a men's twisted fantasy of being able to control women under the guise of it being something deep. There is a way to have all of those same things happen, and for it to be clear to the viewer, that it is terrible and unhealthy. But the way that everything in the show is presented is extremely sexualized and it's practically torture porn. I left feeling confused and gross for even watching it.

If I were to rewrite parts of this show I would have written Jocelyn more like Cassie from Euphoria. Keep the abusive mother and have her be a complete victim to the system oblivous to what is happening around her and just slowly but steadily progress her mental decline. The Message of this show was supposed to be how women get exploited in this job field but that completely missed. By actually making Jocelyn a multi fasseted character that feals vulnerable I thinl that could have done alot for the show
