- PREORDER TERRAFORMER TODAY! thankyouscientist.merchnow.co...
This is a special LIVE performance, recorded using 100% solar power in the fields of scenic western New Jersey, courtesy of our friends at The Sun Lab. If you’re the observant type, you may notice a few hundred extra band members. With some frantic planning (and even more frantic arranging), we were able to meet up with DCI world champions The Blue Coats for this very special performance.
Special thanks to Kevin Grossman of Sun Lab Studios and David Glasgow of the Blue Coats.
The studio version of "FXMLDR" is streaming on all platforms NOW. Download the exclusive live version from this video at our band camp!

okay using a megaphone to make a compressed audio effect was really cool...
William Gutierrez we try
"how could we reproduce that megaphone effect we did in the studio?"
"we could use a megaphone..."
I just saw Tool on Sunday and Maynard did the same thing!
@@alexw6225 he's been doing that for such a long time now
Industrial bands been doing this for forever now. Still cool, tho.
just six cool dudes and a gal just tryna make an anime theme
THE most perfect comment.
No
@@ernstvay5380 shut the fuck up, anime is the best
@@varhah lol he didnt say its not
But there’s like 13 dudes in the band
The shortest shorts in all of Prog, you boys (and gals) have done well for yourselves.
Killing it!
Who would win? Thank You Scientist vocalist, or original Yes keyboardist on the Union tour?
Soaking up the sun
7/10 the shorts are not short enough
Extra marks for the fringing on the singer's shirt though
damn the marimba and vibes during the guitar solo were insane
Marimbas need to be in more songs, they sound so good
Sent literal chills throughout my whole body
@Blaine Burns
Its Insane to even compose such a Part. Only Frank Zappa did STUFF like that before in 1975.
@@sheldoncooper8199 funny you should mention Zappa. Bluecoats and TYS relationship started when bluecoats used some of their songs in a production and the closer started with Zomby Woof and finished with a reprise of Psychopomp
Technically it isn’t even a guitar solo, it’s just some wild ass transition that is ultra complex, because fuck it.
I love how you continue to have a relationship with the Bluecoats after Jagged Line
what happened at jagged?
@@upsidedownpyramid7617 Jagged Line was a show that the Bluecoats (the band that played with TYS) performed. They played music from TYS in the show
@@echowood1732 please tell me they played blue automatic
@@upsidedownpyramid7617 nope, sorry
@@echowood1732 that would have been a perfect time for a pun though XD
Wait a minute... is this a crossover episode?
The ULTIMATE crossover episode, nonetheless.
Doggy Doggy....what now?
The most ambitious crossover of all time
This vocalist is a legend to sing like that live
Their shows are so good
I know at first I was thinking it was the studio mix vocals but no, it's not
Listen to Haken live and you will be amazed how great he sings live... total opposite from James Labrie lol
@@walqc lol!!!!!!!
@@walqc bro, with much respect to Ross but he's far from really good, I'd classify him as just decent. It's different if we're talking Loic from the ocean or Einar (don't think I've gotta introduce him) or Jim Gray (him too)
Dude, the keyboards matching the tapping at 3:20 is fucking sick. Those guys are damn good.
The drummer is wearing Oyasumi Punpun shirt, I have a lot of respect for that
Ahmad Al Hothali and Def Leppard shorts
bruh, i thought i'd be the only one to spot that xD jaja
This!
Yeah she's great
And Afro samurai headband
Huge props to the marimbists and vibraphonists! That arrangement was insane!
I had to rewatch them rip that line with the guitarist, I couldn't believe the speed and articulation. It's so incredible
@@slyskyes590 it's even cooler when you realize that those two guys likely just picked up that sheet music a week or so in advance since Thank You Scientist came during their rehearsal time. They learned their entire show AND this part in short notice
5:10 gives me chills evey time.
I said it before, I'll say it again. I'd definitely pick Sal first in Dodgeball. He just has that look.
Don’t sleep on Ben, the boy has moves
@@thankyouscientist he's also a stick so he'd effortlessly dodge everything
NEW THANK YOU SCIENTIST!
ITS ACTUALLY HAPPENING, THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!!!!!!!!!!
I have already burned through my emergency pair of trousers!
C Cassiopiea time to put on your back up short shorts
Steven Frankowski and knee high socks
tenor sax performing with a drum corps ?!? !?!
Miracles do happen !
I don't see why not. They've added so many elements since the beginning of DCI, many of which seem blasphemous if you are either a long time fan or actually marched back in the day. Don't get me wrong, I still love DCI and still go to my local show every summer (well except for 2020 because everything sucks this year) but it can be quite a shock if you haven't been following them all along and you show up and see trombones out on the field, a keyboard player in the pit who also doubles as a DJ to sometimes play pre-recorded sounds, giant speakers for amplification of various mic'd instruments, including all of the soloists, and last but not least, giant set-pieces carted out onto the field. It can be quite a shock to the system to see all of these things when you grew up listening to, and watching, drum and bugle corps.
Times have changed, and so has DCI. They've adapted and moved along. I won't be surprised at all if and when they decide to allow woodwind instruments, although I'd have to admit it will be really weird to see.
@@gustafsone it'll also be pretty difficult to hear lmao
OMG U WERE OUTSIDE OF MY SCHOOL, how did I not see you guys
During the summer we loaned our field to the blue coats to practice, that's when they were their I assume
@@darthevan01 During the summer of 2018 the blue devils and a couple other drum corps marched on our field for a competition.
Love it, though I wish the corps came out in the mix more. They got buried most of the time.
Antoni Soroka I agree, but even still the horns were so much punchier in certain parts with their backup.
Antoni Soroka also to be fair, the full hornline didn’t have nearly as many parts as the small ensemble in front did. So what you’re mainly hearing is the 8? Or so members that are in the front. Most of the full brass sections are towards the end when it picks up and you hear it more. Regardless, what an insane experience 🙌🏼🙌🏼
I get them being in the back, but I wish they had like a little solo section or something.
Umm no way. They were balanced great. Listen on something other than a phone speaker.
Can't expect too much, a lot of school bands are rhythmic loudness
I love the fact that all the corps guys started moshing during the heavy phrase at the end.
As someone who did front line in high school, it pleases me so much to hear those crisp mallet runs with the guitars, especially around 6:15
Omg as a marching and prog nerd, this makes me veryyy happy tingley
Is this version of FXMLDR the greatest song ever recorded? I mean, probably.
Yes, next question
Xylophonists absolutely killing it. Those might be the most unusual clips ever presented as auditions to a major symphony orchestra. Amazing job by TYS and The Bluecoats, along with Doug Thrower's awesome, apparently last-minute arrangement. Sounds like we have another collaboration coming up too - super excited!
Which symphony orchestra?
From a 72 year old, I love that sound you guys are making. Keep it up..
To sing recording quality live...
Joe's Def Leppard shorts are sharp.
Tom Elder the
Boy has pizzazz
I've been a fan for 4ish years now since being introduced over some board games. Last night, I attended the Detroit show with BTBAM and won't miss another show. A Thank you Scientist headliner would be a dream-level event.
Thanks bud 🤌🏻🤌🏻
This actually caused happiness in me - love the band, love the concept, love the Bobby Weir shorts, loved it all. Thank you Thank You Scientist!
Shout out for the bob weir shout out,, weir everywhere (~);}
I love the fact that they are so good at what they're doing and not taking themselves seriously at the same time 😂
I'm nearing tears: can't believe I got to watch my favorite band and favorite drum corps perform together.
My worlds are colliding! Prog and DCI...where was this before I aged out?
Stayed for the punpun shirt. Was worth it
popular opinion: Psychopomp was the best part of Bloo '17
Ken Faulkner absolutely correct
Well it was the best song on the album
@@davidatkins9382 actually caverns goes way harder
Ok...90's midwest marching band Trom'boner, now living in NJ...This shit makes my soul so happy.
Yeah, I'll update me.. FU.
BLUECOATS and Thank You Scientist = AWESOME IN SOOO MANY WAYS!!!
That sax player has to be the most Murican thing I've seen quite in a while. Keep the prog memeing up lads! Insanely good peformance
As a Western NJ resident, I'm PROUD to see my home state REPRESENTED so SAFELY. Praise be to THANK YOU SCIENTIST for blessing us BARGAIN BOYS with this masterpiece of MUSIC.
I had trouble sleeping because I was so excited for this
What a frickin JAM!!!! Another amazing song by one of the most criminally underknown and best bands on this planet!!! Thank you scientist!!! Thank you. So much. I absolutely LOVE your music!! And those parts with the guitar and xylophones shredding together!? I creamed myself. ALOT. JUST WOW....what else can I say? FUUUUUUCKING WOWWWWWW!
Did you just say... Xylophones

Who let Mikael Akerfeldt play violin for Thank You Scientist?
Mikael Akerfeldt can play anything he damn well pleases. Lol
the energy, oyasumi pun pun, the sound signature, the tone, the jazz, i love this band...
I love that Thank You Scientist dresses the part for drumcorps rehearsals lol fantastic job you you and the Bluecoats!!!
my high schools marching band worked with one of the members of the blue coats the past few years, he got me into TYS:)
Still listening to this regularly. Thank you scientist is undoubtedly the most underrated and underappreciated prog rock band out there, and arguably the most talented. Please keep making music and absolutely crushing it. I need more 😩😩😩😩
God damn, I love this band, and they collaborated with my favorite drum corps. Definitely a win in my book
Well, my day just improved.
Found this song on Spotify randomly about a month ago.
When I thought I couldn't like it more, this video shows up.
Amazing stuff!
I’m digging the def leopard undies haha
Sal has the best dance moves in the game!
The drummer looked like he was about to spontaneously combust at any moment
I love this sooo much. Plus his voice gives me major Coheed & Cambria vibes. And the Blue Coats were then perfect corps to pair with❤❤
dude, this album was released under claudio's label. they're practically coheed and cambria with some sort of parallel universe michael stevens as the frontman
@@bodevp shot forreal?? That makes my comment/initial reaction make so much more sense 😂
They're actually signed to Claudio Sanchez's record label company so if Claudio likes em, you know they're probably gunna be fantastic
I found out about them on the Coheed and Cambria cruise a few months ago. Really cool guys too 🤘
First time I've listened to a non-album performance and I never imagined the singers voice would be this clean live what the heck
This is so good!!! Those mallets are great too!

Awesome track and I love the arrangement! Excited for the new album!

Dime on the kit right there
I. Can't. WAIT. for this new album. These guys kick ass.
Using the megaphone for the compressed audio effect was such a power move, especially with that outfit.
This is fucking gold.
This was in my recommend. UA-cam did their job. "MISSION COMPLETE, GOOD WORK" -CodMw2
Im a big fan of thank you scientist and a big fan of DCI so all I got to say to this. Automatic BLOO
Elijah Haveard well played
Sal sounds amazing!
FXMLDR is just the gift that keeps on giving. i feel very autistically about this song
I have just now discovered this band. I discovered them because I'm going to see them in two weeks with BTBAM. I'd never heard of them until this minute. I just might be more excited about seeing these guys than BTBAM. I absolutely fucking love this!!
That is the exact same way I found them and they crushed!
They were awesome live. I saw them in Winston Salem, NC at the last show on the tour. All three bands were great!
Stunning as always, new line-up is brilliant! Congratulations!
I've been waiting a lot for this to happen! Love it 💯💕
I haven't felt chills like this since hearing the breakdown in "Caverns" for the first time. Beyond excited for the new album.
I was unsure if this is gonna be one of my new bands to listen but after 3:20.... I'm convinced :D
This is so good!
This is so good
I can’t wait to see you in mn and blast your new album! Keep it up!
This literally made my day!!!
what an extremely good first impression of the album. definitely hyped to see more. hope you guys end up touring here again!
I’m so excited to see you guys tonight
Lovin' this collaboration!
This is really awesome.
Love you guys. Pumped to see you in Columbus again!
SO READY TO SEE YOU GUYS IN DURHAM, NC!!
Hope to see you guys on tour soon ❤
You can hear the drumline getting reps in the background with the met and everything after they finish performing. They really didnt let them come see this. Feels so bad
I noticed that too. As someone who's been on drumlines with super high expectations, stuff like this is pretty common. The wind players get to do fun stuff while the drumline gets extra reps.
@@savannahwise7058 yeah same here. Was never on a super high level line, just my high school. Anytime we'd see the winds screwing around or getting breaks (wayyy too frequently), our tech had us out grinding. Cant say I was disappointed though. Probably the biggest reason we were the strongest and most successful section in the band.
This is amazing! Great discovery!
Fantastic!
wow this is just amazing, every time i listen to one of your songs i like them more. im so excited for the new album. keep doing what you're doing. you guys rock!!!!!!
Amazing performance!
I had the privilege to see them Live at the Sylvee in Madison with Coheed and Cambria. They played this song months ago. When I returned home after the concert I was mortified at my inability to find this song anywhere. Months later I'm over joyed to find that the song does exist. Was beginning to think I'd need a map of non-existent places to find it again.
I've been waiting all damn week for this and i cannot tell you how happy i was to see this today. Literally one of the highlights of my day,
amazing
Found my way here from Evil Ink. Will be checking out more of their music.
The entire Stranger Heads Prevail album is glorious.
This video got me so pumped for tonight. Jersey City is gunna be rocking.
