I teared up when I heard of her passing. Lay Down was her biggest hit, I loved it in 1970, still do. Look what they Done to my Song Ma is very good also. Definitely one of the greatest singers ever sang at Woodstock. RIP dear Melanie.
"I ride my bike, I roller-skate, don't drive no car Don't go too fast, but I go pretty far For somebody who don't drive I've been all around the world Some people say I've done alright for a girl" Melanie made me feel like I could do anything I wanted.
I remember Sonny and Cher had a cartoon of this song that played on their Tv show. I had to explain to my son what a roller skate key was and how old time roller skates had to be tightened onto your shoes with the key.
The purity of Melanie's songs is unmatched. She gave us pure joy and love. Her song "Beautiful People" makes me cry every time, and "Look what they done to my song" is so brilliant...
Thanks Harri, I had to prove to my children that there was such a song! I used to sing this to my children....RIP Melanie! We even wore our skate keys around our necks on a string...
This is such a fun song, if you havent done Lay Down , thats amazing! Also Look What Theyve Done To My Song Ma! ❤❤❤❤❤❤. RIP Melanie! A music legend from Woodstock!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
This brings up such memories, she was a an idol of mine in the 1970s. I've always loved the cheeky double entendre in this song ;) Thank you for sharing this!
Unique and lovely, talented lady ❤️ Loved her since my teens and 'Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)' and anything she put her imprint on. Among my first 'celeb' Facebook friends. Rest In Peace, Beautiful Person. 💔🥲🙏🏽🌈🌉❤✨️🕊
In case someone else hasn't already explained this, back then there was a type of roller skate that you could attach to the bottom of your tennis shoes. This type of skate could be resized to fit different people and required a key to tighten. A lot of kids would lose the key if they weren't careful. So essentially Melanie is saying that she needs the other person because "he has a key."
Every song she published was a hit to me. She was one of a kind and a pure joy to hear. Goodbye to you my trusted friend. RIP, dear Lady... Her voice was memorable for one other reason. She sang so loud! Her magical voice was awesome, filled with not so subtle shifts up and down the scales. You got the full force of her voice when she sang live. It was clear and precise but loud!!!. I'm convinced that her sound engineer used a "Spinal-Tapian" inspired amp, except it could be turned down to negative eleven.
This song always brings back a remembrance of youth, of innocence lost... when I first heard it in early '72 I had just gottten out of the Marines so... there was precious little innocence left. It was sweet, it was hopeful to me, it helped me. RIP dear Melanie.
I had the 45 as a little girl bc my Mom bought it and thought I'd love it. I played it on my childs record player 😂at age 7 ! Great memory, love love this song! Her voice was amazing!🎉❤🎉❤
I was about 9 years old but remember when this song was on the radio a lot. I loved it then and still do now. Do I have a dirty mind or is the song an innuendo?
So sorry to hear of her passing. Thank you JK Clark and Harri to hear this song, once again, after all of these years. This song used to bring such joy back in the day. So good to hear it once again!
Oh NO! I was in hospital for a month, and was released last week. I wanted to hear Melanie's Brand New Key again and see your reaction to it. I was shocked to hear you say she passed away. I'll be crying the rest of the day. RIP Melanie. You will be missed.
I remember Melanie's songs growing up in the 70's. She had hits such as "Ruby Tuesday", "What Have They Done To My Song Ma", "Beautiful People", "Ring The Living Bell", "The Nickel Song", "Bitter Bad", "Together Alone", "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" etc. "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)" was inspired by her experience of performing at the 1969 Woodstock music festival.
I'm very fond of Melanie, great singer and songwriter. Woodstock launched her career. This one came out about 5 years later. It was a pop hit and not really the same style as her other stuff, but it's become the go to tune when the average Joe thinks of her. What first attracted me to her was her outstanding cover of the Rolling Stones song Ruby Tuesday. She really gives that one welly. Her cover of James Taylor's Carolina is awesome too.
I always loved this fun song by Melanie but "Lay Down", by Melanie and the Edwin Hawkings Singers Live is an absolute must see and hear!! Sadly, my generation's shy and beautiful flower child is gone.
Well, this (sort of silly) song did very well in the pop charts. It’s definitely her most notable song but she had a few other songs that were excellent. Her voice is definitely flexible. Thanks Harri and JK 🌺✌️
I don't remember how old I was... maybe 15 or so, but as a budding young vocalist this was one of my favorite songs for all the reasons you point out... plus I loved the whimsy offered for a complex situation. It made light and love of a problem. Roller skates, indeed.
Melanie said in an interview that this song was not written with a hidden sexual meaning. If someone wants to think of it as sexual, that's their own interpretation, not the writers!
Came out in the early 70's. I was working as a bartender in a downtown hotel when this came out. The radio stations played the h*ll out it! One of those song you knew where you were when you heard it.
One of the things today's music is, sadly, beautiful and definable melodies. The 60s-80s were loaded with great singers but even more, great melodious songs like this one.
Melanie said, "Brand New Key is the bane of my existence". It's unfortunate that out of all the incredible music she wrote she is mostly remembered for this song.
she was one of 2 women who did solo performances at Woodstock - the only other one was Jonas Joplin. Both did more than just solo things there, but they were the only women to get that chance. That song was actually banned in some areas as being too sexually suggestive - I always felt that was a silly reaction but everyone has their own view on things.
One shouldn't omit that Joan Baez - another musical giant and a far bigger name at the time - closed the first night of Woodstock and wowed the crowd as well.
I know this was Melanie's biggest hit, but it s actually my LEAST favorite song of hers. I think an underated gem is Do You Believe. or maybe react to her doing Dylan's Mr,. Tambourine Man.
If uou really want to pay tribute to a great artist like Melanie, you'd listen to her best song. Melanie was a very talented artist - John Lennon was a fan and invited her to sing on stage with him at Madson Square Garden in 1972. Her best song is probably, 'Peace Will Come' (According To Plan) The original version from her 'Leftover Wine' lp. ua-cam.com/video/G1AEarXu5TY/v-deo.htmlsi=f7L3vEyYdS2FX3TZ
This lovely lady sang at Woodstock. Gets overlooked a lot but her music was a big part of my teenage years. R.I.P. Melanie.
I teared up when I heard of her passing. Lay Down was her biggest hit, I loved it in 1970, still do. Look what they Done to my Song Ma is very good also. Definitely one of the greatest singers ever sang at Woodstock. RIP dear Melanie.
Her name is pronounced Melon-Knee...
This song played on the radio every 15 minutes when it was current. All of us guys had as crush on that voice.
"I ride my bike, I roller-skate, don't drive no car
Don't go too fast, but I go pretty far
For somebody who don't drive
I've been all around the world
Some people say I've done alright for a girl"

I remember Sonny and Cher had a cartoon of this song that played on their Tv show. I had to explain to my son what a roller skate key was and how old time roller skates had to be tightened onto your shoes with the key.
I the old days roller skates were attached to regular shoes and were tightened with a key.
The purity of Melanie's songs is unmatched. She gave us pure joy and love. Her song "Beautiful People" makes me cry every time, and "Look what they done to my song" is so brilliant...
She had a beautiful soul that you could see in her face and hear in her music.
Thanks Harri, I had to prove to my children that there was such a song! I used to sing this to my children....RIP Melanie! We even wore our skate keys around our necks on a string...

❤🩹❤🩹❤🩹 I love this song! R.I.P. Melanie
So many of us hummed or sang this whenever just cause.
This brings up such memories, she was a an idol of mine in the 1970s. I've always loved the cheeky double entendre in this song ;) Thank you for sharing this!

We listened to this song on AM radio when we were in grade school. I’ve loved her music since those days. She will be missed.❤
Very nice singer. I remember this from my younger days. R.I.P. , Melanie.
Loved the double meaning of this song when i was young, is she really saying what i think she is? LOL
A classic from AM radio...driving in the car...cruisin' around....
Candles in the Rain with Edwin Hawkins Group her big one
RIP Melanie. I always loved this song.
First time I heard Melanie was at Woodstock was a fan from then on. RIP Melanie 😪
She was really cute.
I was about 9 years old but remember when this song was on the radio a lot. I loved it then and still do now. Do I have a dirty mind or is the song an innuendo?
It is
I remember being pre school age sitting on the kitchen floor listening to this on the radio and loving it.
thanks mum.
I ❤ Melanie! Have all her albums. Yes, youngest performer at Woodstock.
I still have this 45. She passed away a couple weeks ago . . . . . . thanks for playing. RIH
Her song “Lay Down/Candles in the Rain” was about her experience at Woodstock. She had a lot of hit songs throughout her career. R.I.P., Melanie
Love love love her music

Used to absolutely adore this song back in the day. So sad to hear of her recent passing.
great song, I was 16 at the time, lots of memories
I remember when this came out. I did understand the meaning between the lines. I was to young. RIP Melanie. Great request. Wonderful analysis Harri
I do remember this song ❤ Melanie has been big enough to cross the pond RIP from Denmark 🥲🥰🙏

I heard this song first time watching Boogie Nights. Loved it at first sight.
I always loved this fun song by Melanie but "Lay Down", by Melanie and the Edwin Hawkings Singers Live is an absolute must see and hear!! Sadly, my generation's shy and beautiful flower child is gone.
Back in the good ol days when you had to clamp your steel wheeled roller skates onto your shoes. You needed a skate key to tighten them on. Fun!
Roller girl loves this song.

This was always my go to song when I was out doing karaoke. A crowd pleaser. 😊 Such a fun song! Great reaction Harri! 👍👍
LAY DOWN Melanie & The Edwin Hawkins Singers LIVE '70 (Candles In The Rain. Thanks for the Video Harri, 👌👍
Respect Harri ❤❤❤❤

Rip Melanie. I am such a fan
Great song !

Love these classics!❤❤❤
Roller Girl. Boogie Nights.
Check out her Woodstock performance of "Beautiful People."
One of the things today's music is, sadly, beautiful and definable melodies. The 60s-80s were loaded with great singers but even more, great melodious songs like this one.
Thanks Harri, good job. As usual! Spot on comment about her spot on falsetto and voice quality.
Heartbroken!
Remember the Goodies? There’s an episode where Bill Oddie sings - I’ve got a a brand new Rolls Royce motorcar you’ve got a brand new key.
❤ Beautiful people❤
Melanie said, "Brand New Key is the bane of my existence". It's unfortunate that out of all the incredible music she wrote she is mostly remembered for this song.
Did you know ren did a sample of one of her songs, they sound so good together, would of been a great colab, loved her in the 70s when I was a teen
❤
Her name is MEL A NEE
Most innocently worded song about sex ever written...
Absolutely. Never heard another sexual inuendo that I would describe as beautiful.
I actually met Melanie. One thing you should know is that Melanie hated this song in spite of it being a huge hit for her
Ok, I get it, his thing fits into her thing
Please give tablespoons a chance
It's pronounced Mellany!
Rhymes with "felony" ...

The flip side of that 45 is better imo.
Bought it at age 10 and always loved "Some Say I Got Devil" a lot better.
So many not so subtle innuendos in this song.
I've always heard (since the 70's) this song was about roller skates being a cigarette roller and the "key" was marriagewauna. Ha!
Hmm… interesting. At least in your reaction to Lay Down a year ago you pronounced her name correctly. Funny
I know this was Melanie's biggest hit, but it s actually my LEAST favorite song of hers. I think an underated gem is Do You Believe. or maybe react to her doing Dylan's Mr,. Tambourine Man.
What an innocent little tune of the times. LOL 🤣
When I drop more m o r a More country girls singing less country songs.Arts , what's what it's going to give us a hail bell
This song is about sex. "he" has a new "key". And she has a new "pair" of "rollerskates". Young love, double entendre.
