This quiet opening, so beautiful - the undulatory eighth notes of the woodwinds, then the yearning theme, almost haunting in its beauty. This is one of the finest pieces I have heard in a long time.

Endlich kommt anderes richtige Programm! Ausgezeichnetes Orchester!

It is a real shame that this great overture is so rarely played by symphony orchestras. And the performance here is pure magic.

Along with his mid summer night dream overture, this is the finest one of all the concert overtures ever written.

Wonderful piece, nice conducting. Wagner probably nocticed too - the opening theme sounds a lot like the beginning of "Rheingold". ;)

Mendelssohn’s musics were purposely ignored during Nazi reign. His works were only gradually redeemed to the rank they deserved after the war. What a sad history.

@@hrSinfonieorchester Melusine (French: [melyzin]) or Melusina is a figure of European folklore and mythology, a female spirit of fresh water in a sacred spring or river. She is usually depicted as a woman who is a serpent or fish from the waist down (much like a mermaid).

Would someone please explain to me the prejudice that some "experts" have against Mendelssohn? I have heard that because he lived a generally happy life (except for dying of a broken heart at 38!) he did not have enough angst to write deep music. What BS. NOBODY wrote more memorable melodies. Not Schubert, Schumann, not even the great Ludwig. To me that counts for something.
