First time I went to Greece and asked people "Do you speak English?" they often replied "nai". It took me some time to realize it actually means "Yes".
That hurts my Japanese-speaking brain, because "nai" means "not"

@Johan Jacobs they really hate Anglos don't they?
@Johan Jacobs Imagine Jim Browning challenging a French Quebecois tech support scammer after they ran their gambit in perfect Montréal English, and hearing "Je ne parle pas anglais, Djim." That's what I'm imagining here
I wish I could understand what they are talking about... I'm very positive it's something funny!!!

Americans will never beat the Brits when it comes to weird comedy. Pure joy.
Ugh this kind of comments "hurr durr British comedy superior to American"
Daniel Angel Astudillo it’s not
Daniel Angel Astudillo there’s north america and south america
JusticeFor Alexei so then there’s only 5 continents. America, Antarctica, Africa, Oceania, and Eurasia
It always gets too offensive when we try
"Nur ein oder zwei Worte, aber bin ich nicht fließend" is forever stuck in my head when I try to attempt my pigeon German.
Wörter*
wooooosh
😂😂😂😂
Ja das wäre toll
It's "aber ich bin nicht fließend", not "aber bin ich nicht fließend".
Cos it's, "but I'm not fluent", not, "but am I not fluent?" Get it right lol.
And he said Wörter not Worte. Cos that's too posh
It's such a shame I never learned to speak English. So, naturally, I didn't understand a word anyone was saying :/
Dominik from Germany so do i
Dominik from Germany
Nur ein Deutsches wort. :(
+Dominik from Germany (dominikfromgermany) My situation even worse. I can't type any words in English! Not one of them!)
The same, I even did't get that humor that one speaks in English and says that he don't understand any English word at all. (((
U know islam then?
Please put subtitles on this video? Don't understand anything..
+dubi186 I would but I'm not exactly sure what your comment says, I can't read english.
haha ok that one got me
+jack tenrec I don't speak English and I have no comprehension of its literature either. I know they call it the language of Shakespeare. I should have paid more attention in school. But never mind.
+dubi186 If you don't understand nothing then you understand everything. (double negative) .. Duh
Actually, it only means he understands SOME things, just not NOTHING.
I'm sad to say that this really happens! I was in France not long ago and i was lost. I went up to a woman, asked if she spoke english and she said 'no, i do not speak english, now if you don't mind, i'm on my way to buy some begonias!' and she walked off. This is absolutely true!
I don't know what the begging situation looks like where you were but in Vienna, if somebody asks you if you speak English, about 19/20 times it's somebody who if you stop starts going into often pretty long-winded monologues about how they want some money from you.
So maybe she assumed that that's what would happen if she stopped to listen.
(It's of course still weird that she didn't just ignore you or lie.)
lol: Frogs gonna frog...

i am brazilian, so if someone ask me "do you speak english?" i really will say "i dont speak english" cause i'm not fluent
I think it's a French thing.
When I was in Paris and asked for help French people seemed annoyed when asking if they spoke English. Like offended why tourists don't speak French
i swear i wanna prank a tourist like this xD
TikO LoRd hello sweet bard
It worked once for me. I’ve been living in China for quite few years, and many people ask me if I can speak Chinese. Once I had a (very) small chat with Chinese about me not speaking Chinese in Chinese
I speak quite a few languages, so I could have some fun with this XD
Well, I did a couple times. But they don't seem to be getting the joke since their minds are usually so busy breaking the communication barrier.
Before I left my hometown I did do this after seeing the skit. Just for the memory. I speak Spanish and someone asked me "¿hablas español?" I told them"No, yo no hablo español, pero en la cantina cruzando la calle y el personal hablan español" they were so confused.
The French sign in the beginning of that video shows that they are inspired by the custom of French people never to answer in English, but only if you talk to them in French...! 😊
C'est vrai!
Good spotting! And good custom too - respect the country you visit :)
Yes!
@@lightawake It's a wrong idea that if you don't speak a language then you are ultimately disrespecting the country or culture.
@@lightawake If we did that to an English speaking tourist in India, that would (rightly) be considered rude. But it's kosher for the French to be gratuitously rude for some reason. *shrugs*
Reminds me of my older half-brother... Years ago he was standing in a bus stop, smoking, and an old lady came up to him and asked him if he could light her cigarette. My brother replied with the smoke still in his mouth: Sorry ma'am, I don't smoke. And she was like "oh okay, anyway thanks" and walked away.

Love it! every time I watch it, it always makes me laugh, never gets old.
I am watching this again after 2 years and it still is a masterpiece.
LOL "Do you speak english? No I don't speak english" it litterally means "Do you speak english? No I don't speak english", for those of you who are curious xD
Pure genius I love French comedy!
Well then why are they speaking French?
Well if it was a British show they'd know how to speak British wouldn't they.
But they aren't? He clearly states he can't speak English!
Sorry, could you say that in English, I don't understand French.
"Ich bin nicht fließend" No obviously you're not xD
The woman says, in german: "I speak a bit of german, do you speak german?" Simon says (in german): "German? No. Do you speak german?" The other guy says: "No. I know one or two words but I'm not fluent."
At the end, after the other guy says that he might learn english, Simon says: "Or maybe german." and the other guy says "Yeah, that would be great."
Wish I can understand what they were saying in German but I can't read English
"The other guy" is der Schauspieler Kevin Eldon.
Also, he says "just one or two words" (not "I know").
really? that's what they said? good god!
Who?
British comedy is the best kind of comedy. I don't even understand what they're saying but I absolutely love it.
It's 14 years old and still the funniest
Whats the joke here, i dont speak english
The show ran from 1998 to 2002.
A French girl once approached us in Croatia - she wanted some help with her camera. But we couldn't help her, because she would only communicate in fluent French. When addressed in English, she would shake her head with a big smile on her face.
This video never gets old, love it!
I love Simon Pegg, he is the best!
I’m an American and living in France and I do this all the time when someone asks me something in French even though I Speak it 😂
I can understand it if you're american but on the opposite with the video, french people are generally bad in english language even after many years of school ! It's not to criticize, it's a reality. I'm french born in France and I think the teaching methods are bad.
He said "Its one of those things, really i wish i paid more attention to in school".
It's just great to be able to understand both languages! :D
One of the finest comedies ever.
I come back to this at least once a week 😂
brilliant! Love big train.
While walking down a street as a tourist in Mexico, some other tourists stopped me and asked if I speak "American". I didn't miss a beat, and said, "no, but I do speak English fairly well".
Wow! You are so funny!
I've never heard a single soul in America refer to English as "American".
@@lorblauh Live a little longer, you will.
@@lorblauh I have said to a few British tourists in the U.S. that their American was very good.
@@alwaysuseless Hahaha I would love to know their reaction!
" I can speak english." -"So can I." Hahahaha
That part ruined the whole sketch :( Why explain the joke
@@Floing1337 It's making fun of the way how some people (*cough* the French *cough*) say they don't speak English to tourists even though they can, either because they couldn't be bothered to help a complete stranger or don't like the fact that this tourist didn't bother to learn a few basic words in the local language.
That laughter at the end from the guy on the bike!! Amazing
If you are bilingual or trilingual, this is what you hear sometimes on the street and wonder why they cannot understand each other.
I wish I could have understood English to enjoy Simon Pegg's great humour
Pardon?

Can't believe this has been up for nearly ten years without a translation. I'd have a go myself but my English simply isn't up to the task.

omg hahaha😂😂😂I can't really stop laughing help😂
What is the joke?
Their German was actually really good and I'm surprised bc it usually (from what I've experienced) sounds really bad when English people try to speak German 😅
We Brits are shit with languages but we usually speak better German than French (sorry France).
@Mario There's more to Britain than England. :) Besides, I meant in terms of pronunciation and ability: more people know French, but those who know German can, IME, speak it far better. We Brits find German a lot easier to pronounce than French, as it has fewer new sounds to learn and pronunciation is closer to English than languages like French.
@Mario They speak mostly Urdu and Punjabi in Pakistan
@@Communist-Doge At my Scottish secondary school, around a third of incoming students took German, although not through choice in my case. It was popular with less able pupils as it was reputed to be easier to learn.

I spent the past 12 years learning English so I can understand them now it's time for another 12 to learn german and understand the rest of the video
I'm german but I have to admit ^^.....deadpan british humour is the best ! but it's good you know to see that humour can be a connection between different countries. it's not always about who is better than the other-it's just making fun of yourselves and laughing with eachother instead of laughing at eachother.
and yes, such a kind of comedy is one reason why I am learning english XD

Brighton Beach avenue in Brooklyn, NY. Two elderly men are standing on the street and discussing something in Russian. A tourist approaches them and addresses with: "Excuse me, where is..." and continued asking for directions to a nearby attraction. Two men politely stopped talking but said nothing. The tourist seemingly perplexed softly asked: "Do you speak English?" to no avail. A somewhat vexed tourist left the two men.
