    Link to the SAS Expander (among other things) in the description!
    Last time I bought a server just for its motherboard: ua-cam.com/video/48HsUPoXrTs/v-deo.html

    Great technology overview but my favorite part of the video was your cats!

    Great video! Ah, so then I definitely want to take the board out and build my own 2/3/4U box with Noctua fans. I'm thinking TrueNas Scale myself. Maybe the two M.2 slots would work well with a pair of small NVME drives for a boot pool. 🤔

    Fair warning. I like Chenbro cases too, but if you use the drive carriers, you want to add a bit of insulation to them. I've had a hard drive controller board short out on the metal before! Scared the bejesus out of me when I got a three inch flame off the board while trying to find the problem!

    Thank you for making this video! It gave me the confidence to pull the trigger on this exact Datto backup server, knowing that someone else had done the chassis swap. I am planning a very similar swap, the only difference being I will be using a Rosewill RSV-L4312 case instead.
    Did you have any issues come up on the reinstallation side? Any firmware issues/case alarms, things like that?

    • @PeterBrockie
      @PeterBrockie  Рік тому +1

      I don't see any issues. It's a pretty standard server board. The bios and IPMI firmware were no issues to update.
      My only regret is not buying a second one when I saw the motherboard up for only $250. :P

    Cool video, good info. I have a s4p2143, going to try converting to TrueNAS

    Thanks for taking the time for the review. How did you go about getting firmware for the mainboard as all the ones I tried from asrock were not compatable?

    • @PeterBrockie
      @PeterBrockie  Рік тому

      It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure it was the bios they have on their site I used along with the generic LSI firmware flasher used for normal PCIe cards.

  • @douro20

    I didn't know LSI made SAS3 controllers. I have a SAS2 one in my main desktop computer running four SATA hotswap bays in IT mode. The only reason it is in there is due to poor placement of the onboard SATA connectors. LSI designed their storage controllers not far from where I live in Wichita, KS.

      I know the SAS3008 is available as a standalone card (www.storagereview.com/review/supermicro-lsi-sas3008-hba-review). I'm sure they have other models in the line up, but 12Gbps is really overkill for hard drives in a home server. Plus the 12G expanders are hard to find and/or super expensive.

    I just got one of these, how do you get that cover off to install the 2.5" drives under it in the caddys..

    • @PeterBrockie
      @PeterBrockie  2 роки тому

      You unscrew the top panel which covers them. I think there might be a couple screws on the side of it and on top, but I don't remember 100%.

      @@PeterBrockie Yeah i found the screws, they were covered by 2 stickers, Thanks for the quick reply. Just installed Truenas on it, after installing fan silencer resistors :) machine is fast & perfect !! picked mine up for 500$ shipped..

      @@JasonsLabVideos Keep an eye on the SAS controller, 10GbE controller, and CPU temps with slower fans. I found in testing they all get really hot without the stock, loud fans.

    Hi Peter, Would you happen to have the STL file for the fan adapter in the video?

    • @PeterBrockie
      @PeterBrockie  9 місяців тому +1

      This one? www.thingiverse.com/thing:3536919 Or did you mean the little thing to clip a fan to the heatsink? I don't remember where I found that one.

    Hey just came across your vid. One of my clients upgraded to a new Datto and i was able to keep the same model in your video.
    but QQ: does your IPMI work? I can see the IP but there is no web page to access.
    I tried to update the bios but the system freezes when i try to install.

    • @PeterBrockie
      @PeterBrockie  Рік тому

      It shouldn't be freezing. Are you updating the bios from dos? Ipmi works fine, I suggest updating its firmware too as it will clear out passwords, etc.

    • @HeathenPrim3
      @HeathenPrim3 Рік тому

      @@PeterBrockie I was trying from the instant Flash feature. I may try the DOS method.

      If that acts weird as well, you can try a closer version if it's really old - go from 1.2 -> 1.3 -> 2.0 instead of 1.2 -> 2.0 or whatever - I just made up the version numbers, but you get the idea. :D
