- Widowed Advocate Triloki Prasad lives a wealthy lifestyle in a small town in India with two sons, Advocate Ashok (Vijay Sharma) married to Geeta and Alok who has yet to settle down in their law firm. Alok is fond of music and enrolls in classes run by Pandit Jamuna Prasad. On his return, his father asks him to accompany Ashok to their law firm and start learning to practice, which he agrees to do. One day, Triloki finds out that Alok has not been going the firm but is instead spending time in the local slums with a former courtesan named Sarju Bai Banaraswali. He cautions Alok about this, but Alok continues to visit Sarju Bai. When Mr. Gupta approaches Triloki about taking possession and demolishing the slum area, Triloki readily agrees and with his expertise manages to sway the Court's decision in Gupta's favor. As a result, Sarju Bai and others are rendered homeless. With the fee he receives from Gupta, he asks Alok to purchase a used car for himself. But Alok purchases a horse-carriage and decides to drive it himself to make a living. His enraged father asks him to leave the house. When Triloki finds out that Alok is doing well in his work, he decides to hire motor coaches to transport people at a much cheaper price, thus cutting off Alok's earnings and perhaps forcing him to reconsider his decision, apologize, and return home to his father. The remainder of the film deals with Alok battling all contradiction, and if the father-son duo continue to harbour their differences.

Masterpiece my favorite Hrishikesh mukhrjee. 1st film that i saw from Hrishida was '"Satyakam"' in 1971-72 in my first year of college and even after 50 years i am still watching his movies starting from " Musafir" and each one is a masterpiece. Thanks Hrishida and U tube.

Hrishida is the real film maker.
For instance, the father son confrontation in Aalap is so nicely depicted.
Ppl talk of trishul, shakti etc...the father son interactions there are good too but they look deliberate and very loud.
While the one in Aalap is so natural, and controlled with no loud lines...

Yes, also same for myself. Only at 8, I saw Hrishida's' 'Aashirwad (1969) and became his fan. He was the finest story teller of movies with simplicity. Today at my 61, recall all my association, meeting with him in Kolkata and Mumbai before his death in August, 2006. He was my mentor cum father.

There are few all time greatest classical super movies Aalap is one of them I watch off and on . Parichay, Guide , Anand, Chupke Chupke, Satykam Dosti many more golden era of Indian cinema music lyrics singers actors 1960 to 1980 .
Why didn't I watch this Gem before? Having an ocean of tears into my eyes just finished watching.., Kisi ne sach hi kaha hai ., Zindagi mai kitni bhi muskilat kyun na aye ek din khusyan zaroor milti hai..., So, giving up into your dreams should not an option ever.
Why does Amitabh Bachan have to be so good. His acting just completely captivates you.

Jo filmen logon ki nasamjhi ki waja se flop ho jaatien hain jab woh release hoti hai. Magar baad me wohi filmen cult filmon ki list me chali jaati hain. Aalaap bhi aur Mili bhi un me se hain. Aise bohot si filmen hain jo first release pe flop hoti hai baad me logon ko realise hota hai ke hum ne ye kya kar diya. Aisa hi film Sholay ke saath hua tha. Pehle chaar hafton me film pe flop ka tag lagne jaa raha tha magar 4 hafton baad film ne aisi udaan bhari ke India ki number one film ban gai. Mehboob ki Mendi first released me flop declare ho gai thi magar saalon baad jab re-release hui to apne melody gaano ki waja se logon ke dilon pe chha gai thi. Mera naam joker aur Anil Kapoor aur Sri Devi ki film Lamhe ke saath bhi yehi hua tha.

Amitabh had 3 innings.First 13 movies,career best movies, all flops.2nd innings with 80+ movies with most of them 3rd grade but commercially hits,and 3rd innings with the most versatile character plays. Today when I look behind I feel Indian audience never had taste of class like Hollywood contents. In 100 plus years, 80% of the movie are not worth a watch,though commercially successful.

What a mastepiece....all characters played their hearts out but the combination of Om Prakash/Amitji /Hrisikesh and with the added cherry on the cake...Sanjeev Kumar just made this so memorable that it is a pity such movies did not win awards.

Please mention the name of Chhaya Devi among the list of actors /actresses. She played the character of Sarju Bai in this film. You may not know she was one of the versatile character artists from the Bengali Silver Screen. She acted above 100 films for five decades. She was fluent in Hindi & Urdu and also a trained classical singer. When Hrishikesh Mookherjee approached her for this film, she was first reluctant but after listening the screenplay she agreed.

Very good information about Jem of our Bangla movie late Chhaya devi. I was not aware that firstly she denied this role. Her hindi and Bhojpuri pronunciation is so well in movie. Hrishida had given her another chance in his movie ' Rang Birangi' (1983) with Om Prakash.
