I've owned 18 AR-15s in my life... Colt, SIG, BCM, FNH and S&W. They're good weapons.
Now that I'm retired, I've sold them all off and purchased a Mini 14. This makes the fifth (or sixth?) Mini I've owned.
It's much more accurate than my earlier Minis. I consistently get 2moa at 100 yards.
It's much, much easier to clean than my ARs were. No q-tips, no bone tools, no dental picks and no star felt cleaning patches. All I need are two rags, some Ballistol, a tooth brush and a bore snake. It's very telling when an entire industry springs up to manufacture gadgets to help people try to clean their AR. One guy at the range purchased an ultrasonic cleaner for his AR(!)
I no longer hear a SPROING from the buffer tube when I pull the trigger, because there isn't a buffer tube.
The side mounted op rod is easier to manipulate with the weapon shouldered. The safety is truly ambidextrous, and I don't have to shift my grip to hit it. I've owned six M1As and five M1 Garands. I've never had a mishap with that safety.
My Mini is a 5855, with the black polymer stock. I swapped it out with a new, original Ruger birch stock. Now it's a 5801. Serial number series 584.
It doesn't have any "evil" features (no muzzle threads, muzzle device, bayonet lug, pistol grip or adjustable stock). A five round magazine fits flush with the stock.
I purchased a LEVY leather sling for it. It's embossed RUGER with the eagle.
If this makes me a "Fudd" to you, I don't care. After owning numerous ARs, I've decided that I prefer wood, steel and leather to plastic, aluminum and nylon.

    • @georgewhitworth9742
      @georgewhitworth9742 2 роки тому +15

The only thing that would make anyone a genuine "Fudd" is if you were advocating that AR-15's need to be banned and people should instead buy Mini's because "they aren't weapons of war" or something.
Just cause one prefers the Garand action over AR's, doesn't not one a Fudd make.

      @@georgewhitworth9742 perfectly stated, sir.

Good points! I'm 75 and like you love wood stocks and Garand actions. But I love my ARs too. One thing I learned over the years... Never, never ever sell a good gun! And keep up with the new designs like the SIG P320 and P365.

Just a fantastic rifle with a throw-back historic nod to both the M14 and M1 Garand. The Ruger Mini-14 is just a reliable shooter with good enough accuracy to hit varmints out to 300 meters. Is it a "better" rifle than an AR15? No. But...does it need to be? It's an American workhorse and a lot of fun to shoot. Plus, it's a good looking rifle! That should be enough.

@@drdrake63 I have both. If you want a traditional looking semi auto rifle then the Mini 14 is a great all round firearm and is a great self defense firearm for the average person, not headed to a combat zone. If you want to add all the bells, whistles and various attachments then the AR15 is a better platform, but I find the understated looks of the Mini 14 make it ideal around campsites and boat ramps where there are people who are not "gun people" who will get excited at the sight of an AR. The fact it's legal in just about every state also makes it a great travel companion in your RV etc.

A 5 round magazine fits flush in the mag well of a Mini 14.
Very comfortable to carry that way and plenty of rounds for varmint or small game hunting.
The ability to simply load the magazine from the open receiver is a plus too.
No need to remove the mag after last shot hold open; just push rounds in from the top.

I bought the 583 series. I worked through a break in procedure. Honestly IDK how effective that is but u only get 1 chance so y not. Next thing was the trigger. It’s easy to polish the seers to get rid of the grittiness and that’ll lighten up the trigger a bit. Finally i found it likes 62 grainers, Federal Fusion being the best and the most expensive. These old eyes really appreciate a optic. It’s a old weaver 4x that is serviceable. Actually first scope i’ve had any luck with! It really demonstrates how accurate these new rifles can be. Not sniper rifles for sure but it’ll hold a 3” group at 100yds. Lots of fun and I already have more ammo for it that i’ll ever shoot.

I bought my Mini14 back in the '90s, after I bought an HBAR Comp Colt. At the time, the Mini14 cost me about half of what the AR15 cost, and that price was much of the appeal. I haven't priced out the Colts in the last 20 years, but there's a lot of reputable brand AR15's that cost less than the Mini14 nowadays. Mine's old enough (I guess) that the first few shots are great, then it starts spraying them all over. And it's not a ranch model, so no scope mounts. It's a fun gun, but I'd buy an AR15 today based on value for $$$. 25 years ago, that value proposition balanced toward the Mini14. (On the aftermarket mags, once I sanded the rough edges smooth and reblued them, they all seem to work great)

I've got a really old mini-14, bought back in early 90's. Shot soda cans then at 20-50 yards then and still now. I also got an M1 Garand around the same time . Sights are similar. I'm good to go. My Mini says .223 Rem, of course I never use 5.56. 🤔 yes is an old Ranch . Will never lose to anyone either of my family, thanks Sir

A nice trigger job by a gunsmith was the best thing I did for my own Mini14. Secondly an adjustable gas valve is very handy for range shooting so I can drop the brass right by my side. The valve just has a knob on it to cut back the gas as desired.

I bought my Mini at Walmart several years ago in North Dakota, where there is no mag limit requirement but mine came with just a 5 round magazine. I do like those and have bought a few more 5 rounders since, but I invested in the aftermarket 20 rounders, mainly ProMag mags.
I think the newer 580 and higher rifles are more tolerant of the aftermarket magazines. I suspect Ruger knew about the issues the older rifles had using aftermarket mags, and was able to address those when they refitted the rifle for the 580 series. Mine is a 581 series and I've had no issues running the Promags on my rifle, it functions just fine.
Overall I like my Mini just as much as my AR's, and if I had to hand out my AR's to family or friends for their own defense, and all I had left was my Mini 14, I'd consider myself well armed.

Good rifles that are properly priced. As far as dependability and durability is concerned they can’t be beat. I have the one my dad bough in 1979 and one I bought in 2015. Ruger has made changes to the barrels, and the trigger on the newer ones is much better than ones from 40 years ago. A compact low powered scope (3x) does wonders for accuracy. A red dot is also a great option. Although I have many AR rifles, when I drive around the property I more often than not have my Ranch Rifle in the truck. It fills the role of a great gun for coyotes and I have taken many deer with a .223 and the proper bullet.

I have a Ruger Mini14 Ranch Rifle from 1999 and as you stated in your previous review of this rifle, it can shoot both .223 Remington or 5.56 NATO, although back then, they stamped the receiver CAL. .223. Ruger confirmed this as well. It's a great and fun rifle to shoot and utterly reliable. I swapped out the original wood stock for a Hogue over molded synthetic stock so now it's a black rifle!

Fantastic and under rated dependable rifle! Not exactly a quiet action to carry due to design. Has a slight rattle! Holding the charger handle stops the rattle . Small quirk if you know about it! Older Vietnam sniper showed me this and I am forever grateful for the advice! Have used it on feral hogs and coyotes for years with no problems! Great rifle with a proven record of performance! It is heavier than an AR style rifle . Which I prefer a heavy rifle after a lot of rounds down range in a day or long night of shooting! Too each their own , God bless you and stay safe!

Did Ruger also address how overgassed many of these guns were? Going to meatier barrel profile with a better heat treat removes the need for the strut. Whoever one of the other common accurizing things people used to do with mini-14s was changing out the gas block for an aftermarket adjustable unit. Then they could turn down the gas so it wasn't using so much force to cycle because all that force tended to create flex in the weapon.
