  • Top 5 Biggest Lobsters Ever Caught
A lobster grows to a weight of one pound after seven years in cold water and gains an additional pound every three years thereafter. The average weight for a lobster is 3-4 pounds. However there are some recorded lobsters that exceed the average. Here is the list of Top 5 Biggest Lobsters Ever Caught.

In the early 1700s and 1800s, it was documented that the average lobster was between 18-25 lbs off the coast of Maine. “Anything smaller wasn’t worth keeping”. The average size is now down to 1-4 lbs.

Remember everybody, the smaller the lobster, the tastier it will be. The meat is more bitter and tough as they age.

Actually, that's a very good point.. all .. ahem... humor aside from the above reply.. In fact the person mentioned in the video who paid a kings ransom to eat Charlie the lobster probably wouldn't have appreciated it very much had they not "rescued" it.
OTOH, the meat on a 100 year old lobbie is in large part formed long before the oceans floors were lined with DDT, crude oil, radioactive debris and corexit.. Might actually be better. We'll never know, though...
They keep throwing them back. Without asking the lobster hiow it feels about it. Oh, wait.. the Lobster doesn't "feel" anything at all about it. Just keeps on going dum de dum "great. caught a fish.. eat. yum" dum dee dum.. Oh! I'm dead! OK dum de dum de dum... Shit I'm bored... dum de dum dum de...

***** They are not immortal. their telomeres still degrade they just do it very slowly. Also, eventually they will stop molting. So they do die eventually. Jellyfish actually can be immortal. When they are injured they can revert back to a baby and grow up again.

I'm a spear fisherman/skin diver and what people don't realize is that the bigger in size of the lobster, crab or fish, the tougher the meat is to eat. Something that survived that long deserves to be left alone in my book.

Very large lobsters are have less tender meat so are rarely eaten and there is already a size requirement for taking lobsters allowing the young to fully mature. Something you have obviously not done yet.

The giant lobster pictured at the end with the guy standing in the water was about the size of the one we spotted (and videoed) several times in Cozumel. So, although this says they are the biggest and Guiness said the 44 lbs one was a world record, I know there were bigger ones out there. We didn't catch him, but saw it over and over again over the span of 10 years of diving.

In the 80s I caught an absolutely monster size lobster. It was off of Bass Rocks Gloucester, MA. I almost missed it. It was so big it didn't bother to try to get away. The body was so big I had to use two hands. The visibility was about 15 feet that day. I was beyond the rocks and into a sand bottom with rocks strewn here and there. I was swimming slowly when I seen one of the rocks move. The beast was too big for my bag not that I was going to take her anyways. She was an egger, can't take those. I wish I had a camera that day.

Back in the early 90's i worked as a truck driver for a wholesale seafood distributor. I delivered a 40 pound lobster to a restaurant in Manhattan who's owner paid $9000 for it to put it in his gigantic aquarium in the middle of his 5 star restaurant. It was a little over 3 feet long. I had to go all the way up to Rode Island to pick it up. Would be a sin to eat that thing. I was happy it got to live in a beautiful aquarium. I wonder if it's still there

I am also a part of the LLA and the UMA, aka the Lobster Lovers Association and the United Mushroom Association, which i am also a preist in. My mommy married a lobster man, thereby proving that lobsters are the superior species because they can make my mommy happier than any human could. Lobsters are my life and I have a girlfriend lobster that lives in a tank in my room names tyrone. She attends Lobster Academy, and is currently earning a 51.5 GPA, and is also the best in her class. She has a bright future ahead, because she has a phd so technically she is Dr, Tyrone, anyway, she will become a heart surgeon for humans because she has very stable hands and doesnt need scissors

NOTE; For many years there was a very large Lobster on display in the Halifax airport.
It was probably the one mentioned in this video.
The lobster was in a glass case, and it was just the shell of course, it wasn't alive.
    On a side note;
The larger a lobster grows, the tougher the meat gets, and therefore it does not taste as good.
So trying to eat a super large lobster would probably not be a great tasting meal.
Best to let them go, and just eat the smaller ones of about 1lb.

When I was 12 or 13 me and my dad where on a father son trip to the coast, 2nd day and we stopped at a little seafood restaurant after a long day of fishing (still hadn't caught even a perch). I looked at the tank like any normal kid my age would and sitting above the other lobsters was in the tank.... a 16 lbs lobster!!! My eyes lit up and I wanted it. I was still young and dumb so i didn't realize how much something like that cost i soon found out when the tab came in 160$!!! For my plate alone my dad actually bought it for me and I dug in literally the whole little restaurant saw and where watchin and taking photos of them bringing out this monster lobster. I had it for dinner in the place there, then took it to the hotel room had it for my midnight snack, put it in the fridge got up had it with my dad for breakfast, put it back in the fridge, Then finally I finished it that evening again for my midnight snack. Great memories this video brought up!

When I was a kid, Our family visited an aquarium in either Boston Mass. or Portland Maine and they had a display of undersea coastal waters. In the display there were plaster replicas of lobsters which were estimated in size and weights by experts. These "lobsters" were theoretically constructed on the basis of very limited fishing and few natural enemies and the display represented the sea floor over 500 years ago. The size of these lobsters were that of small compact automobiles and weights were estimated to be several hundred Lbs.

The Reason why Lobsters can get this bigg is that they are biologically immortals. They never grow old, and weak. They are ecually fresh when they are 2 years old, and when they are 250 years old. However, over the time they live, they may end up with a lack of food to sustain their size or lack of vitamins, because of an unlucky week. This causes them to die young for the most part. But if they never got sick, never lacked food or vitamins. They could grow "allmost" infinitely old. This is why it is so hard to estimate their age. Because there is no change to their pfysical health or appearance with age.

I'd say its like a giant boar. You COULD kill it and have a shitload of delicious pork. But there comes a certain respect when it comes to creatures that live this long. Its kind of like killing a 1000 year old Greenland shark, or the worlds biggest blue whale.

Very large lobsters and prawns also, can be tough and too dry to eat, also hard to digest. Better let them back into the sea. I happened to cook king size prawns 0.5- 1.0 kg and it was not as good. Same lobsters exceeding 2-3 kg are also hard.

Lobster this size are not supposed to be taken in North America and could result in a fine at least in Canadian waters. and the reason is to protect the stock of the bugs. but Americans will take just about anything they can not unlike the Japanese, and this is demonstrated by the show Big Fish on the History Channel, the fish stock on the tuna are so depleted it has a high monitoring system, and the fisheries should be closed fore up to ten years to allow stocks to return even in a small way like we did with the cod fish, and with them it was a battle as we placed a moratorium on them and the American and Greek and Japanese and the people from Norway simply sent in factory ships and cleaned out the fish to the point where we had to place warships out there to protect the fisheries and the region is open but to the regular fishermen in small boats closer to shore only. Long liners and refrigerator ships or factory ships are banned and if they come here they will be seized just like the one was that went to Australia and was seized for ever and that was a brand new ship, they were going to Australia because they had successfully out fished their own shores to the point of zero fish remaining g.

That statement is quite accurate, larger lobsters tend to be tough, and not as good to eat.
Smaller lobsters are called "canners" and are very tasty.
Lobsters around 1lb are called "markets" and that is generally the size most people eat.
Anything larger than that is not as desirable.
