    Very emotional but ever so important story.
    I love hearing stories where two soldiers from separate armies help each other. The human desire of love and care for one another can overcome many obstacles, but governments and egos get in the way.
    I hope this man finds peace with his mother dying before he returned and realizes that she did wait for him as long as her natural life allowed her to.
    I’m sure she waited each and every day, hoping she would meet him again.

    Such a great moving piece. Reminded me a lot of my dad.
    My dad had a similar story. After becoming a us citizen at the end of the chinese exclusion act, he went back to China in 1982 to see his family but to only find out they all starved to death during Mao's great leap forward program.

      @@jasondpa lol, just like there was no Holocaust in Germany or the Holodomor in Ukraine. Don't be stupid, there a TON of stories from Chinese people and reports of all the death that happened caused by Mao. The worst modern-day genocide was caused by Stalin and Mao, who were very close. Of course, murderers get along well with other murderers.

    Something to clear up first is that the Chinese Civil War was reigning BEFORE the start of world war 2, but the civil war was put on a ceasefire so China could temporarily unite against Japan, then after Japan was no longer a threat, the civil war resumed.

    His story moved me deeply and reminded me of the story of how my great grandmother was hit and killed by a bomb whilst foraging for food up in the mountains for my grandmother in China. My grandfather (paternal side) also defected from the army whilst traveling to Taiwan and escaped to Malaysia. So much suffering and hardship everywhere…May all our ancestors rest in peace. ❤

    My maternal grandparents family was a KMT supporting family: both grandparents were persecuted during the cultural revolution. The communists were mostly gracious compared to previous decades of warlordism after winning the mainland. My maternal grandmother's uncle was a pilot (transport) for the nationalist airforce. So, everyone on her side was suppose to go to Taiwan. Her grandmother refused because she was determined to be buried in her hometown where she spent her entire life. Because of this, she stayed behind (the only one in her family besides her grandmother).
    If Chiang showed more grace at the end of WWII and worked to revive China as a great power, his legacy would have been entirely different. If there was no KMT, China would have still been more divided like the warlordism era at the onset of Japanese invasion and his recovery of Xinjiang at the end of WWII prevented fragmentation of China. His obsession with destroying the communist delayed China emergence as a great power by decades. Instead, China became first a proxy of the Soviet Union through the Korean war and later American proxy through containment.
    One can only hope Xi doesn't make the same mistake. From Chiang's point of view, he unified China (however imperfect) and defeated the Japanese ending China's humiliation while Mao had no comparable achievements (owning a few provinces and no major cities or industrialized region). It seems impossible for the KMT to lose at 1945 as China emerged for the first time in a century as a "policeman" while the rest of world were all colonies or under occupation. Yet, they did lose. Xi obviously cannot let Taiwan go, but he can do a lot more. Courting potential trouble with Taiwan is dangerous as limited nuclear weapons, lithography, and oil/gas supplies/pipelines as well as geography are all potential choke points in the near future.

    From the perspective of history, he made a best decision for his life. If he had chosen to stay in China, he would have died or been prosecuted during the Cultural Revolution.
    He says if peace is there between Taiwan and China, then both can be winners.
    But now China's desire to invade Taiwan is growing more and more clear, this country is doing things preparing for invasion.
    As a democratic country, Taiwan wants peace indeed, but facing the growing threat from China, Taiwan truly gotta make some moves for protection. These two years may be more risky.

    It’s also important to remember that the country of Taiwan was not a battleground for the Civil War (other than the incredibly small island of 金門) and it merely had uninvited guests from a war it didn’t partake in.
    Taiwan has its own history, thousands of years before Han people ever settled here. It’s been colonized by 4 different countries. Han people should also be allowed to live in areas outside of China without being claimed by China, just look at Singapore and Malaysia.
    If China can see this, accept it, and end their pursuit of Taiwan, when their fight is with the old invading government which doesn’t even rule the country of Taiwan, then peace is possible and will be a reality.

    • @scarfacejosh123
      @scarfacejosh123 Рік тому +4

      This is the best comment by far. It's staggering how the KMT was able to co-opt Taiwan for its own Nationalistic purposes and it has been able to hijack the narrative of Taiwan since it has occupied the island. The KMT seem to think they saved Taiwan from the CCP, when in reality, it was Taiwan that saved the KMT from the CCP.

    • @LaiHsinyi92
      @LaiHsinyi92 Рік тому +1

      @@scarfacejosh123 exactly. They had no where else to go so Taiwan was chosen due to close proximity. The KMT guys couldn’t give two shits about Taiwan, they just wanted a place to go. Just looking at how Chiang Kai-Shek treated the people in Taiwan. Bottom feeders to him and just a rest stop until he could continue his fight.
      228 is next week. The horrors of what the KMT did shouldn’t be forgotten. Taiwan is a victim, it’s not a friend that chose to to help the KMT.

      The aboriginal Taiwanese are virtually extinct like in every other country that was colonized hundreds of years ago. China is not claiming all those countries. PRC is claiming it is the legitimate successor to the ROC and all of its territories (though it is weird to be claiming to be a successor state when it is still around). I can't predict the future, but if Xi lets Taiwan go without a fight, I would not be surprised if he would overthrown in a military coup.
      I want to believe that at some point, the CCP will allow for actual elections at the local level. Don't know if I will live long enough to see it. A bigger Singapore. I believe if Chiang avoided the Chinese Civil War, the ROC would have became a constitutional republic.

    • @LaiHsinyi92
      @LaiHsinyi92 Рік тому

      @@thelastbison2241 There are over 560,000 indigenous peoples in Taiwan with most living on the east coast with their culture still intact. Xi can get killed by his people. He is pushing fabricated lies about PRC legitimacy over Taiwan.
      Japan only handed Taiwan to the ROC momentarily due to the swift surrender and so there wouldn’t be chaos and with further discussions to be had over Taiwan’s future, but the KMT became a single-party system and turned Taiwan into an authoritarian nation for the mere purpose that they could get stronger and fight the PRC. The island and people of Taiwan were never involved voluntarily. If anything the supporters of the old government can go to China and finish the civil war, but the people and the land here no dog in that fight. The same government doesn’t even rule Taiwan and China knows this, which is why they threaten war if Taiwan changes it constitution appropriately.
