I follow you from a very distant and dark place in the world "AFGHANISTAN" and it makes me happy. it is my biggest hope to have freedom and make an off_gride house like this. love your channel
I deployed to Afghanistan for a year. I met very fine people in the mountains. Living there is not easy, especially in the remote areas. I hope you can build an off grid home someday. Be safe.
Take a toliet paper roll and put some toliet paper in it, not packed tight, just loose enough to hold the paper, strike your flint spark into it and it will start a fire for you. Great little way to start a fire in an emergency or while hiking.
I like your videos and the information about off the grid living you present. I would like to know what state is that, because I am looking to buy a small land so I can build my own cabin. Thank you so much.
Please be safe with the generator. It should be several feet away from the cabin. Carbon monoxide could seep up from underneath into the cabin and in the windows. Great job on your cabin! 🙂
I collect antique percolators. I think I have twelve at my home and three at my camp. Perked coffee is a must at a cabin or camp. Love the cabin. It’s beautiful. ❤❤❤
Wow that's a bunch! This was one of my first times experiencing a percolator. Very cool. I am excited to use this more at our cabin. Maybe on our wood stove.
The cabin is looking great! What a great way to spend time with the family. Working, eating and having fun is what it's all about! Love that. Beautiful family and a beautiful area! Can not wait to see the final product! Keep working hard and stay safe out there!👍👍
Thank you for your kind words and for following along. Extra family time is a huge benefit of cabin building that I didn't think about beforehand. It has been a blast so far.
We live in a log cabin in Alabama, and though we do not have the coldest days or even many days that are cold. I would not trade my Hearthstone Soapstone stove for anthing. We bought the cabin after we were hit by an EF5 tornado and the wood burning stove came with the cabin. Whate a prize.
We use used motor oil to stain the exteriors of our out buildings it gives them a dark brown near black hue but it's free and protects the wood and isn't any more flammable than the stuff you buy at home depot plus it blends into the woods beautifully looks like viking buildings
FYI you can make your own water-proof matches by dipping "strike anywhere" kitchen matches in either melted paraffin or nail polish. Old girl scout trick.
Jodi, you want to keep the flat piece of steel near the wood, don't move it, keep it stable, then PULL the round rod away under the flat piece. Don't strike towards the fire. Pull away, works better. . . Left hand, flat steel. Right hand, round rod, under steel, and PULL. Try it. Not only will it work, it works better because you are not throwing wind towards the fire. . . . . . .
You need to put the flint down into the tinder when you strike it. Make the strikes faster also. Like brace the point on the bottom then start striking it.
when you use the steel fire starter take the cord that keeps it together off put it back later ,the round rod can be scraped to get tiny shavings off make little pile on your tender before you strike and as some one else already told you pull the round rod back towards you holding the striker still to keep the sparks going were you are aiming when the spark hits that little pile of shavings it will ignite with a lot of heat (super heated ) should lite even semi damp tender
What a process, you guys have done great. I love Minnesota. I have done many canoe trips up in he Boundary Waters and Quetico. I have even done one long trip up in Northern Ontario. Now that I am in my late sixties we travel up and stay in various cabins and lodges for a week or so at a visit. This looks like a great location.

Awesome build and good going in this money market! Came here to comment on your stovepipe, I hope it is the insulated type going through your wall! These are more expensive, yet very important to keep your walls from heating up. Cheers! and stay safe.
We have a wall kit for going through the wall. Similar concept to insulated pipe. We’ll show it in the next video 😊 thank you for watching and commenting.
@@jodimiddendorf Yeep! Keep them Utube algorithms flowing :) I'm filled with determination at the possibility of doing something similar myself some day.
Keep up the great work. Something useful for starting your fire is keeping your dryer placing some of that in your kindling when using the flint and steel. New subscriber enjoyed.
Hey Guys....Saw this video on my feed.....and thought I would check your video out. Like you style so far and nice to see other kind people doing the same as we are. Is there a video that you could link me to so I could get some back story??? I will browse around on your page for a minute too, But wanted to say hello and send you our best. I think you need to angle the steel the opposite way on the flint. Instead of the top of the steel TOWARDS the flint end, it should be AWAY FROM the flint end
Why did you not put metal roof underlayment between your roof and framing? Metal roofs can condense alot. The first good run of that wood stove with a sealed cabin and it may start to rain in there.
If I was stuck in a survival situation and I had a choice between an underground nuclear bunker with generators and hydroponic farms with a never ending supply of clean drinking water, or Cory. I’d choose Cory every time. ❤
after you lit the match where did you put it,>????? on the stuff to be lit. just like the flint , it would have would have worked if you put it closer to that which you want to light, instead of 6in away..
Definitely tried the flint very close. I only put a few seconds of trying the flint in the video. We actually tried for 10 mins. We were super close. Other people commented about how I was holding the tools. That was probably the key to light the fire.
We plan to go out of the wall and then add pipe (is that the right word?) to get the top of the cabin outside and hopefully pull more air. Would you still go 45 degree?
@@jodimiddendorf straight up through the roof is usually best you'll get more heat off your pipe and burn less wood. That's how I have them in my small house and sauna
@@tonecoughlinphotography I agree there are so many benefits to going through roof, we aren’t doing that because we may do other things in the cabin that would not pair well with stove pipes. Haha that’s super vague I know.
