And there is this pernicious mentality that still haunts me to this day that 'your life doesn't start until you graduate.' Which then leads to 'your life doesn't start until you graduate colloge, or until you get a promotion...a raise...not until you retire...' It's never ending. The perfect way to keep people under control.

I taught public high school ELA for 25 years, and it destroyed my health. There is SO MUCH TRAUMA, both first-hand and second-hand!!!! The moral wound of being directed to do more and more things that are harmful to children nearly ended me. Then MAGA students, parents, and colleagues bullied me relentlessly for 2 years. I could not keep students safe when I could not keep myself safe while union protections evaporated under 45. I retired early to poverty, with CPTSD & and an autoimmune disease. This is an important convo, and SO triggering for me! Thank you both for your service!

my dad is an ELA teacher of about 24 years i think? and goes through similar trials. i always remember him coming home upset and almost hopeless certain days. luckily there were also days that he came home smiling bc he was able to positively impact a student emotionally and mentally. some students came back and told him that he positively impacted their lives more than their parents did. teachers raise these students during the day and don’t have the public resources and support that they need. i’m in my final year of college and i’d like to thank you for your work, as some of my teachers changed MY life for the better. i’m sorry for the long- term effects it had on you. your service is more impactful and appreciated thank you know. you’re one of the strongest among us.

Whew. I am living this! My eldest is a person who will happily respect anyone who can explain why they should be respected - mainly by respecting others. When adults don’t do that, they have no patience. Shockingly (/s), they came to distrust most adults pretty early, as they were failed repeatedly- like to keep my child physically safe from attack. I simply did not have the energy to fight the establishment and keep my child safe while doing it. I took them out of school because I had no other choice. Sadly no democratic schools in my country. Now my child is 17 and despite all we expressed to them about their worth, without school qualifications, they feel lost and worthless. I believe they will eventually find their way but it is heartbreaking to see, especially knowing that if I had money to give them tutors, etc., they’d be engaged differently. It’s exhausting.

23:37 this spoke to me more than he probably knows. as someone w adhd (and mental health disorders, i wouldn’t consider adhd a ‘disorder’) i struggled to regulate my emotions and as an adult that didn’t have those skills ingrained, i struggle with this almost every second of everyday. while i’m able to function, i could be WAY better with my reactions. adhd children are demonized and reprimanded for not being able to regulate, even if it’s a well studied aspect of adhd. we know it’s bad, but not how to stop the explosive outbursts of ‘negative’ emotions (resulting in snapping at ppl, extreme irrational anxiety, sudden sobbing/ sadness episodes, etc.). we’re not taught to be effective members of society for ourselves and the people around us which leads to higher crime rates, mental illness rates, lack of creativity, tumultuous intra/ interpersonal relationships, etc. WE NEED RADICAL EDUCATIONAL REFORM AND EDUCATIONAL PERSONNEL SUPPORT. NOW.

This is so helpful for broadening my own painful experience with learning. I love learning but I had so much trouble with communicating my chronic illness experience - mostly was blamed on behavior.

Daniella!!! Thank you so much for this conversation! I would LOVE to talk to you, as a career educator who is working in a non-industrial education model. *I just co-founded a microschool this year - we focus on making space for children who are not thriving or safe in the public system. **And I grew up in a family cult. -Rebecca

I started homeschooling when we narrowly managed to avoid eviction because our landlord wanted our unit back in 30 days (and apparently 4 other units) and we had to move mid school year but because my landlord called to inform them we no longer live in the town we had to change schools.
I now continue to homeschool because of my child’s ADHD though the school shootings as well as difficulty with scheduling/babysitting around my job don’t help but because of the reasons you mention we do co-ops and are starting gymnastics and dance since we have more time flexibility. I would love a school like this, don’t think I can afford it though.

Where are links to Jack's content - or even his last name? I've watched him before on TikTok but can never find it directly. Read Bel Hooks on his rec, thanks!
    Great discussion.

I also went to a public alternative school. It was indeed life changing. I guess he calls it ‘democratic’ but same thing.

WE DON'T HAVE TO ACCEPT THIS, AND THEY CAN'T MAKE US.
