Flat belts. Dangerus but effective in the old sawmill.

  • Started up the sawmill today, so I filmed the belt transmission just for fun. I think it is a wounderful thing, those belts. But they sure are dangerous.
Some of the belt needs tension, i know.
Im also working on new videos, the welding series coming up soon. Cast iron and aluminium etc.
A new video of the zero rpm running engine is comming up also. With a more detailed wiew of internal parts and how it works and what makes it able to run at 0rpm.
    /Richard.

I find it amazing the belts stay in place and dont work themselfs off

The pulleys have a convex running surface. Tends to keep the belts on real well.

@@FlatBroke612 that's the coolest thing!! A belt will pull itself to the HIGH spot, counterintuitively! I've seen sanding belts slip off and zoom across the room like they were still powered! Flat belts are neat!

@@FlatBroke612 interestingly the same phenomenon is used in modern steel mills which galvanise or paint steel strip. All the rolls that support and redirect the strip are slightly convex, which keeps the strip running true through a line which could be 1000+ metres long. Only a bit of mechanical steering is needed to correct the strip's path if it is not a completely flat shape. Amazing stuff all coming back to this basic principle.

Band saws, depending on their size do the same thing, small ones have a crowned wheel, large ones the saw is sort of crowned a shorter on the tooth edge.

    • @azertyytreza8947

It’s called a crowned pulley. When the belt wants to pull to the side it bends in such way that it steers itself back to the center of the pulley. It’s the same principle as trainwheels on rails

I like your video's wery much .. Where do you get the belt for your machine ?? Do you have a link ?? Or shop name . I need one for my ferguson tractor here in Norway . Thanks . Michell Norway 👍😊

What's preventing those bands from slipping off?

    • @YesterdaysMachinery
      @YesterdaysMachinery  3 роки тому +12

Good alignment and the pullies are slightly curved, a little bit bigger in the middle of the beltsurface, so the belt wants to stay on the center, most of the time. Works better than you would belive.

Darwin award winners did not pay adequate attention to open belting. This applies to v-belt drives as it does to flat belting. 😂

Great to see the flat belts working. I've two old vintage spindle moulders which were once driven by flat leather belts via a lineshaft.

I have just discovered this channel and I personally work on and with 1890s line shaft belt driven machinery all is well providing you have no loose clothing and common sense. Obviously common sense is in very short supply these days what with everyone being treated like a idiot. I am not anti health and safety but there is a happy medium this machinery if treated with respect is fine although I might have a few guards in place!

There the "radiator". It pumps the water into the top bowl and it wanders down the twisted plates, this helps keep it in the air longer and allows it to cool.

That reminds me of the Amish sawmills here in Tennessee. Except they use modern diesel power units instead of super-cool antique iron! Actually, for my area being predominately agriculture back in the day, antique engines are really rare. (?)

You should have seen the main sawbelt when it split itself in two pices and one snapped of and flue up like e wip and snapped of one of the 2x5" i the roof and kept whipping til i shut down the engine. Thats was a bit concerning.

Cool how the low tension belts will settle into a slow moving or stationary wave fronts. I’d imagine random in phase waves could add to to a “rogue wave” and jump the pulleys.
