New 100 pound power hammer: overview and first test

  • My previous hammer made a bit too much noise, and had play in the guide ways. This new one is a lot more quiet, has a brake and is generally just better designed and build.
    Specs: 100-120 pound ram, 3hp monophase motor, 210bpm.

      I really would go with either a conical clutch or just a tension wheel on a V-belt as clutch next time. The tire system requires to much force to get it started with such a heavy hammer. It works but it's not as good as I would have liked. The brake is a little more complicated then but it should be doable.

    ARE PLANS AVAILABLE? WHY BOTH GREASE AND OIL? THANKS! VERY NICE HAMMER!

    • @slome815
      @slome815  7 років тому

      Sorry, I don't have plans for the hammer. Grease is used for the hinge points, since they don't rotate and are subject to a large force. For the guide way and the rotating sleeve bearing thick oil is used, it is ideal for this and it also doesn't trap dirt and dust like grease does.

    Nicely done! One point of improvement would be, though, to modify the foot pedal to get it lower, so that you do not have to stand with your body weight all on one foot while working... Otherwise a great job...

    • @slome815
      @slome815  5 років тому

      This hammer needs quite a bit of pedal force to work. As I said, it's not a very good design to scale up.
      If I would build another hammer of this weight I will return to a belt drive with idler.

  • @forgeworxblacksmith6453

    Are you forging pipe there? Doesn't seem to extrude/draw out very much compared to how much you decrease the thickness

    • @Anino_Makata
      @Anino_Makata 5 років тому

      nigel laing No, it looks like solid round stock. If it were pipe, it would have been crushed flat under the hammer. Especially with heat. He was just forging it a little too cold. CK45 behaves similarly to other tool steels, such as W1 or S7. If it's not up to temperature, it won't move as much as other plain steels.

    100 pound power hammer... I wonder how this number gets figured out...
    is it 100 pounds of maximum hammering force? (if so, how to calculate?). or is it the overall weight of the hammer??

    • @slome815
      @slome815  5 років тому +2

      It's just the weight of the ram. Energy per blow would be better, however these kinds of hammers have always been designated by the hammers weight, probably because this doesn't require calculations. The speed of the hammer also depends on the height of the workpiece, so the energy would vary quite a bit.
      Force would be even harder and more useless to calculate, since then you would need to know the negative acceleration when the hammer hits the workpiece, and this greatly depends on workpiece size, material and temperature.

      No, it does not. It moves metal just a bit slower then a 50kg (100 pound) kuhn. And about the same as a 80 pound sahinler. For a mechanical power hammer it hits as good as any other. Just the control with the tire does not work as well as I would like.
