- A complete playthrough of Konami's 1994 Sega Genesis platformer, Castlevania: Bloodlines.
Played through on expert mode with Eric Lecarde.
No cheats were used in play during the recording of this video. However, I used a code to access the Expert difficulty mode.

The audio in this game is so fascinating, I can't get over that wolf howl at 4:02 The developers clearly knew the Genesis' sound limitations and just styled it without even trying to force more realistic sounds that didn't work on the hardware.
The sound FX are cheesy but have a bubbly psychedelic effect esp. on level 2
Michiru Yamane overdid herself with this soundtrack. Absolutely brilliant.
She really did. I'd raw dog her for all her hard work!
MrVolcomclassic okay lets not say that
@@MrVolcomclassic what the fuck
What did he say
@@voidedwinner1478Maybe that it’s a better soundtrack than IV or Symphony of the Night
The music of those Castlevania games always blows me away! I don't think there ever was another game franchise with that level of consistency regarding music composition. The music scores from these games are simply brilliant!
Mega Man is the other one that comes to mind
One huge advantage Eric Lecarde has over John Morris is that Eric can go several places that John Morris can't go by pole vaulting upwards in select rooms found in several areas of the game.
LOL, just like Knuckles in _Sonic & Knuckles,_ in a way. 😁
What about morris? And why isnt he john belmont? Dont non belmonts die when using the vampire killer?
@@KSCK993 He's half-belmont or something like that as I recall.
@@aputridpileofb-movies6542 OOOOOH ok thank you.
@@aputridpileofb-movies6542 Konami shoehorned a Bram Stoker character's son into this game, and tried connecting them to the Belmonts (the Morris being Quincy in the book, the son for this game, John of course). Just never felt quite right, though I could accept Eric LeCarde as a character, because he wasn't from the novel, and they found a good use for him in Portrait of Ruin. But yes, the Vampire Killer drains the life of those not of the Belmont clan who try and use it, and I believe the whip use eventually killed him, making him a non-Belmont.
Stage 2's beginning music...omg!
I love how this ties into Portrait of Ruin. John Morris in Bloodlines is the father of Jonathan Morris in Portrait of Ruin
This game is often overlooked, and it might be the BEST Castlevania game.
Yeah. Even with the franchise Bloodlines is too different and special.
Some of the best graphics I have ever seen in a Genesis game. Especially the water level.
I thought the graphics are kinda shitty. They do have some cool spots like the Sunset at the beginning of level 2 and the large ruined shrines in the background of Level 2 and 3.
Alien Soldier and Gunstar have way more colors onscreen and better FX too
The graphics are OK but they suck sometimes Castlevania needs better you gotta realy bring the A game
For a Castlevania game, this one had an arcade-feeling to it. And that's why I love it. It's straight-forward and gets to the point immediately, just like the original on the NES.
Good music, feels so Genesis. Castlevania never disappoints.
Nice finish. That was great. Always loved the opening scene with the woman floating by the Windows.
Her name is Elizabeth Bartley and she is the villain of this game.
@@timrosswood4259 how can she be the niece of Dracula? Is there any sibling of him?
@@oguzhansapmaz5277 That's the weirdest thing in the castlevania lore to you?
Yeah I remember almost being in love with her lol
@@angellosstarot5798every dude was lol
I always used Morris, because it doesn't feel like Castlevania without the whip. 'Bloodlines' is a close 2nd to Castlevani IV for me. If you could attack sideways, they'd be equal. Love the end boss music!
Igual yo
Attack sideways? What do you mean by that?
@@KSCK993 8 way directional whipping, Castlevania 4 was the only game in the series to have it.
Remember seeing this in EGM and Gamepro all those years ago, laughed because it looked like a poor effort at CV, along with Contra Hard Corp. My cousin needed my help one day to defeat the Gargoyle boss on the Leaning Tower, beat it, no sweat, but something inside of me said, hey, it's pretty freaking good. Few years later, bought a Genesis (1998), my first 2 games for the system, Castlevania Bloodlines, and Contra Hard Corp (which I took a gamble on, but it paid off due to how good it was too). I never laughed at those 2 games again, I loved them. The EGM magazine's pictures didn't paint a picture on how good the games were.
Because EGM were known at the time for not taking their gaming serious. They were a bit narcissistic with their reviews and also biased. They laughed hard at Contra: Hard Corps because they felt it wasn't a "true Contra title" (Dan Shu, I believe, wrote that).
The staff at that time were:
Dan Shu
Crispin Boyer
Shawn
Sushi X
It was made by the same company that created Contra....
That would be entitlement for the developer to do to deviate from their usual formula.
They've made breakout hits on NES, Gameboy, SuperNES, and they've produced something different. Even though if it was a comical to a degree, one can not deny the game was incredible and the overall presentation was solid.
Happen the same thing with MGS and the Gamemasters magazine.
Fun fact: this game is set in 1917; the same year when Finland (my country) became independent from Russian Empire.
OK
Basically during the Great War. And the sequel during World War II.
@@ramirezmejiaignacio And with the fact Finland ended up into civil war between white anti-socialists and red socialists in spring 1918, only a few months after the independence day December 6th, yet with WW1 going on in Europe, I got reason to suspect that Elizabeth had dipped into my country, too.
Nice!
CV Bloodlines rocks!
And it's definitely one of the more mature entries in the series, as it spared no expense in having blood and minor instances of gore within. (Splatterhouse anyone? After seeing the latter series in action, I ponder if Konami decided to take an ode to that one purpose?)
What I loved was that this game was rated GA.

Thanks for the upload. Cheers!
It's been 30 years since the release this masterpiece one of the best castlevania games ever
oh god, I loved this game SO MUCH!!
For me the best castlevania game ever.
Loved this game as a kid! I'd bring my Sega genesis over to my grandparents and we'd rent it at the video store, staying up for hours playing it.
Very nice run man your amazing at it. It's nice to look back on this game and see someone run through it and get to the levels and beat it unlike my cousin and I. Kudos👍😁
I’m glad that Castlevania: Bloodlines has been finally getting the love it deserves in recent years. I remember when I was a kid the general attitude towards this game by many gaming magazines was, “Well it’s fine, but it’s not Super Castlevania IV”. Which honestly annoyed me because I thought this game was better just for the fact that the levels didn’t have time limits. 🤣
Anyways, great playthrough.
On place of Dracula I would feel tired from constant revival and dying. What's the fun of being killed over and over again? Could he at least try turn to peaceful existence, start a business like selling T-shirts with his image?
Just look at what happened though. He's me now xD

Thank you for this amazing game timeless!
I never played this one but it looks really good. The graphics are great for Genesis, the soundtrack is awesome and the sound effects are punchy.
nice touch with stage 1-10's music using CV1 Dracula's theme "Nothing to Lose"
Whoever is playing this is managing to make this game look easier than it is
As the only Castlevania game ever released for a Sega console, Konami did a great job in making it feel very much like a Genesis game.
I think they might’ve slightly tailored this one to feel a bit closer in spirit to Master of Darkness than the Belmont saga that Castlevania was best known for.
Honestly this is the darkest themed of the old Castlevania games. Idk. Something about it.
This had to have been one of my first video games I ever played when I was maybe 6 or 7. It's so weird the other day I only vaguely remembered playing a Castlevania game on my Genesis and didn't know the name but I knew there wasn't save files because I remember drawing out the stage codes in a notebook lol. Watching it now I clearly wasn't good enough to play it all in a one hour sitting. For as little as I do remember, the bosses just keep coming back to me so quickly. I very clearly remember the weird movement of the last boss of stage one and the sound effects on the last boss of stage 3.
Love the strategies you use. I prefer just going all out and using whippo instead of pokey. Keep up the good work!
That spear's no ordinary spear - it belonged to Alucard. How Eric Lecarde got his mitts on it doesn't seem to be explained.
One the top sega mega drive / genesis games
Mai Kim Dang up there with S3&K and Contra hard corps.
Elijah Hodges defiantly
The best castlevania game of the 16 bits (in my opinion of course)
Great job. you are pretty good at this game
I completed the game as Eric on the Anniversary collection
I used to rent this one all the time from Sounds Easy Video. Never was able to get to the end.
Of course Germany would have a military /industrial theme to it. How cute.
this is set during WW1 in it, Elizabetha was the one who killed Archduke Ferdinand of Austria.
Besides the Snatcher footage, I'd like to know if I could also use your Castlevania Bloodlines and Contra Hard Corps footage for that one video I'd like to get done in a month or so. -- AT
John Morris, Texas' pride.
Awesome game! Great music too.
This is like Vampire Killer on steroids! XD
So does this come before or after Julius Belmont in the storyline?
+DreamWizard9 Before, since this game takes place in 1917 and Julius fought Dracula in 1999.
This game takes place after Order of Ecclesia events. No more Belmonts until 1999 (Julius Belmont).
It's an amazing castlevania game the graphics are awesome and the soundtrack is fantastic. 😀👍🧛♂️🎮
Only 6 levels and level 4 is a Factory that doesnt fit Castlvania much at all. I like this game but look at the SNES version its way better and more levels too
for me.. level 4 the munitions factory in Germany is the best soundtracks of CV bloodlines..❤❤❤
29:20 Someone's going to hire a better groundskeeper for this piece of France's pre-revolution history when Lecarde's done there...
My favorite genesis game.
You sly devil! You inputted a cheat that allows you to play on expert mode with 5 lives on the title screen! To this day, me and my brothers just can't get that dang thing to work for us!
It's not a cheat you need to complete the game on normal to get expert mode also the options menu allows you to put amount of lives
Level 2 boss has a Vectorman feel going.
oh man that was the coolest game i ever seen for a sega game except i sucked at the game due to it never giving you enough time to explore
@@fargeeks I thought the characters should have been smaller - and a lot more content period.
Yo I wore this game out as a kid. Man I miss the 90s
Before the inverted castle in SotN, there was this shit @ 37:56 and 38:57. The level design in this game was so good.
I honestly thought this was superior to Super Castlevania.
SC always seemed like a dressed up tech demo to show off SNES graphical tricks, and the 360 whip ability seemed cool at first, but destroyed all balance since the enemies weren't changed to keep up with it.
Bloodlines felt like more effort was put into actually designing a game.
I’m gonna say it.
This is better than SCV4 by a huge margin.
I think so too. SCV4 was too slow. I think Bloodlines and SOTN are the 2 best Castlevania games ever

I just got this on PS4 and I really enjoyed it prob. because my expectations were low. It has cluttered graphics and the sounds are not right for Castlvania but
thats kind of its charm
Brilliant soundtrack given this was in the 90’s. I was in 3rd grade or so when this game first came out and it was my favorite. I found a seller who sells this game with sega genesis and I think I’ll take it..
This is part of the Castlevania Collection.
17:08 Holy shit is that Mode-7 on a Genesis/Mega Drive?!
No, just a simulated effect.
If you look closely, you'll notice the tower is split horizontally in thick lines. The trick is that they move each line left and right in different times, giving the illusion that the tower is tilting.
The effect looks better on a CRT TV though.
BTW, the first boss of Contra: Hard Corps used the same trick, but with vertical lines instead. Looks hideous. :p
@@marcsm2008 Ahh, I see! Thanks for that explanation. Contra Hard Corps is pretty sweet too! I actually prefer the Genesis Contra and Castlevania over the SNES ones. They seem faster paced and more violent.
@@haircafekevin
Yeah. Honestly, most action-packed games on the Sega Genesis were faster than their Snes counterparts.
I always had a huge respect for the Sega Genesis. Still do. It was always amazing to see what companies could squeeze out of the limited hardware of the console.
In fact, the Sega Genesis even had a faster CPU than the Snes, and many companies took advantage of this. Even games that got released on both consoles usually ran faster (and with a better framerate) on the Genesis. The Strike games, for example (Desert Strike, Jungle Strike and Urban Strike), ran great on the Sega Genesis, but struggled to run on the Snes.
Of course this eventually changed, with Nintendo pushing upgrades on the Snes' carts themselves, while Sega was more focused on the Sega CD and 32x.
Still, the 16-bit "console war" was one of the best ever, because both the Genesis and the Snes were amazing consoles that really felt different from one another. I'm one of the lucky ones who had both consoles, and I actually find it hard to choose a favorite between them.
@@marcsm2008 Hell yeah! All hail BLAST PROCESSING!
Definitely prefer it if Bloodlines and Hard Corps had been on SNES exclusive.
Well great job! My heart stopped at the end! Way to play! I thought you were a gonner......
The name Elizabeth Bartley is somewhat wrong - it's supposed to be Elizabeth _Bathory_ who has Dracula resurrected. A classic case of the lack of an "Rr" and perhaps a "Th" sound in Japanese messing with the translations.
She was a Hungarian noblewoman who lived from 1560 to 1614 who, according to an eclectic mix of historical evidence and legend, was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of girls and young women in the lands she ruled, allegedly bathing in their blood to keep herself looking young. How much of this was truth and how much of it propaganda by her enemies will forever be unknown. If the stories _are_ true, it makes her the most prolific serial killer in all of human history. But whether there is any truth to it, she gained a fiendish reputation, and ultimately became the inspiration for another fictional vampire that entered Castlevania canon: Carmilla.
This looks like a fun game, by the way.
All the stages were so damn good. Honestly Super Castlevania just doesn't compare to this game.
Super Castlevania 4 is like a fine painting, a bit easy on difficulty, and an early release title for the console. This one was a later release for the Genesis, and a departure from the lore of the Belmont clan, it's story was also shoehorned in from Bram Stoker's Dracula novel, something to this day I feel sort of hurts this game. Still not sure why Konami went this route and had such a drastic departure from previous games lore. But then again, Castlevania's timeline is a bit messy. This one also suffers from being too short, especially with the marathons CV 3 and SCV 4 were.
The SNES version is much higher quality but Bloodlines has a psychedelic thing to it that I really enjoy. Bloodlines should have been longer at least 2 more levels its
over pretty fast
00:23 excellent sound track !
Great guide
I really like this one
One of the best
Ladies and gentlemen, that music is the genius of Michiru Yamane, who gave the world some of Konami's best music, including King's Valley 2.
I've only ever had a NES and SNES, and I never particularly cared for Genesis' FM audio. It was only years after that I heard Bloodlines' exquisite soundtrack and realized that CV IV's music could at best be classified as "experimental syncopated mast***ation" in comparison (DX was better, but still nowhere near as good). This is top-tier Castlevania music, and it makes FM sound so beautiful, you wish other composers had the skill with it that she does.
Hermosos recuerdos. 10 de 10
the enemy and player life bar blocks looks identical as the player and enemy life bar in Ninja Gaiden on NES lol

Why didn’t they have the name Elizabeth Bartley in the credits with the other bosses?
I can now know from where Circle of the Moon got the majority of it's music.
This gonna sound noobish but the only way I got expert mode was through a code book in a magazine... Does the game give you the code at all if beaten on a certain difficulty... (can't beat stage 6 because I suck)
+TheDemoniusX I don't believe so, iirc it unlocks Expert mode after you beat it without giving you a code. I looked it up since I didn't feel like sitting down to record two consecutive playthroughs just to show that ending.
I thought so. To hell playing with it twice in a row. Sure it's a great game but a piss poor way to extend gameplay and unlock expert. I'm glad they put a good to access it!

*Mark Elliot:* Two young vampire hunters set out to fulfill their destiny.... Push back the evil hordes and drive the vampire back into his dark netherworld.
Que chimba esa luna en él fondo ..
LOL. Stage 5-7's archers don't make any sense. Instead of shooting their arrows straight at you, they intend to delicately shoot them up and arch them at you even though at that velocity, they wouldn't pierce anyone's skull (let alone a piece of cardboard) or do any damage. AND you could easily catch them and perhaps throw them back with more velocity, haha. Oh video game logic, so funny at times yet so cruel at others... Never gets old.
Ha-ha it's so true. At least, no matter how illogical, it does stay consistent :)
