How to Calculate Parametric Filters (PEQ) For Better Bass

- This is a quick video on how to design your PEQ (Parametric EQ) filters to achieve better bass in your system. Yamaha has a 7 band PEQ filter scheme per channel, including the subwoofer. Once you identify the frequency you want to apply correction, you simply select that frequency (Fc) and calculate the Q with the following formula: (Q = Fc/BW where BW = f2-f1). For example if the center frequency is 25 Hz and the problem frequencies are between 20Hz and 30Hz, then you would select 25Hz for the frequency and a Q of 2.5. Then apply the amount of cut (- dB) you need to flatten the bass bump you measured in your system at the listening position. This is a teaser, if you guys want a more thorough explanation with examples, get those views up and give me some comments.

I would like to see Gene do an REW hook up video with the mic. Start from downloading the program to hooking up the mic and taking a first reading. Show everyone how easy or hard it is. Nothing like seeing it done to figure out if I can do it and if it is worth if for my situation. I'm using "my situation" actually meaning everyone who is wondering if it would be useful to them.
Agreed 👍
Agree I would love to see a step by step video on rew. It’s too complicated
Excellent quick tip Gene! 30 seconds of an Audioholics upload is more informative than a years worth of content from these other “audio” channels!
Yeah…. There is this forum over here where I do live, with tons of self appointment industry experts providing rubbish crap tips, better listen to the real pro’s: Gene and @audioholics 😍
Short and sweet, I was kind of on the right track working through it myself, thanks Gene, I own a Yamaha RX-A3070, my first avr like it and it's capabilities, I've not done much with PEQ, being new to it, I now understand it better and have some more work to do, a final fine tuning.
You should do a more in depth video on PEQ for svs owners and yamaha owners
You measure in REW using a USB mic, use the formula as described to determine the filter needed as in REW you’ll see your peaks and dips. Apply and re-measure for verification
@@josephfranzen5626 Is it one speaker at a time or does REW give you a curve for all speakers?
@@tvolkman88 ideally you play main speakers with subs and measure the combined response at multiple seats to determine correction.
@@Audioholics thanks Gene I have the emotiva XMC-1 with 11-band PEQ and I'm trying to figure this out in lieu of paying the $100 for Dirac full
Epic video
I actually had no idea how to do that and I’ve never messed with this stuff. Will see what my 5200 pre pro is capable of
I had a question about about the 4K/120hz update that was promised in February 2022… it’s March now and there hasn’t been an update… do you or anyone else on this feed know when Yamaha is going to actually going to release the update?
Love my Yamahas Gene
I am about do go manual mode with my Denon, I don't know what Audyssey thinks it doing.
This is still abracadabra :(
Good job both analysing and making the wait for the full review interesting. I hope that Yamaha engineers will soon come back with some fixes about pre amp distortion in order to let you continue your review...
Metoo. this is killing me.
@@Audioholics I understand, high expectation, two years in the making and the first measurements are so so... I am really concerned about this as I am in the wait for the A8A. It's really strange to spend to many ressources on reducing rig vibrations but not being able to output clean pre amp signal :(
I've got a pre-order on an A6A, I hope it's not a disappointment, if the review says it is, I'll get a cheap AVR and wait for next year's models.
Hey Gene quick question. For DSU upmixer leaving center spread on for 2 channel is awesome. However, should I turn off center spread when I am playing 5.1 or 7.1 content? Thoughts as I don't know the idea of center spread and I want to know what you think since having to go to the receiver menu continuously is not fun. Thanks!
Yes center spread on for 2ch music, turn it off for 2ch TV or movies. Center spread doesn't matter for 5.1 source or above.
Need 1 tip a day please
