Nelsons videos are epic. How great to have a video record of such a special time in NYC ... that Golden Era that started in the down-and-out, bankrupt 1970's and closed with the Disneyfication of Times Square and Downtown gentrification. I'm so glad Nelsons vlogs were not lost or destroyed after his premature passing.
I bet everything was fun with Nelson. Back when wearing more clothes at a time was fashionable😂 I remember guys coming to school in ties, baggy slacks (no butts out)and dress shoes without being asked to,I miss the 80s. Thanks for the post.
Some experienced New yorker should do a map of ALL the places Nelson frequented in those vídeos: restaurantes, clubs, streets. Something like: New York Sullivan's tour.
Who was the guy singing around 8 minutes in? And who was the person at the end who walked up the lane? Anyway, thanks for uploading this - it's nice to see everyone genuinely enjoying themselves (none of the cynical, automated misery that is so commonplace now). Fenton's messy hair and his Russian hat are a real look. And as always I love that Nelson took time to shoot some of the scenery of the day - scenery many take for granted but is so important years down the line.
Young and full of life. One of the last generations to have to go out to communicate and chill. Would have been cool to have experienced the 80s and 90s
Where everyone was free to contract lung diseases and cancer from other peoples bad habits, make everything smell ike a fucking ash tray, and litter their cigarette butts everywhere. You all in this comment chain are dumb as hell.
Yup......that's the bowling alleys at the Port Authority.......The cops even back then congregate in bunches just like they do today. You just can't miss it. People from all over the country talk about them doing that. They can at least try to split up and walk around and try to look busy instead of standing there with their hands in their pockets and talking to each other.
Aids was a death sentece then, no meds. People were used to it, loads of the gay community believe they wont live long and they will get it eventually. it was a part of their life.
One of the videos before this had someone in the comments asking why they don't mention AIDS. I guess we see it here - they did but just as gallows humor.
I caught that as well. It was probably a really weird/scary time. People were dying all around, yet here these folks were living their best lives in spite of it all.
I grew up in NYC my whole life. Why do people keep saying it was so different back then? It’s VERY similar actually, ignore camera quality since it makes us feels it was so different.

Dick Richards, a childhood friend of Nelson's who is seen in a lot of the videos. He's been digitally transferring and editing Nelson's archive on this UA-cam channel for over 10 years.
Not really. It was par for the course considering where they were. Maybe out in nowheresville USA it was a lot. NYC was alot cheaper to live in back in the late seventies early eighties. It started picking up in the later eighties and nineties.
So is the Nelson guy just a random guy with a video camera who filmed his everyday life? Or is this guy a somebody and because I'mpretty a nobody I don't know who he is..?
😂 They'd only be so lucky to have it just smell like a bus terminal. It probably smelled like human faeces and urine combined with the smell those seats naturally give off.
On that day it must have been difficult to imagine that people around the world would be watching their event 32 years later...

Rumor has it, one of those hot dogs still is in port authority to this day
Are you Dr Remulack?
I could believe it.
@@jaketaylor7763 I was Dr. Remulack, now I’m Kitchener Leslie.

Just look at those beautiful perfectly coifed 1980 hairstyles on the guys at the door
I used to go bowling there. Scuzzy times square, but that's how it used to be.
Thanks so much for putting these videos together!!!
I'll bet the comedy show Nelson was making was gonna be good with his humor and all these characters in his videos.
Some experienced New yorker should do a map of ALL the places Nelson frequented in those vídeos: restaurantes, clubs, streets. Something like: New York Sullivan's tour.
7:45 what a tenor! And boy!
I’m just taking a wild guess that this is first time most of these people went to a bowling alley.
Bowling Alleys wer big 80's 90's I remember chain smoking in their. But no smoking there for brob 15 years.

Nelson's subject: the human condition.
Young and full of life. One of the last generations to have to go out to communicate and chill. Would have been cool to have experienced the 80s and 90s
I rather be born in the 40’s or 50’s than in the 90’s . I would had enjoyed the 1900s 20th century.
When all of the great indoors was a smoking zone.
Those were the days. When the cashier at the grocery store had all the brands right behind them.
Thank god that's not the case anymore. Can't stand cigarette stench.
Yes the good old days without an abundance of rules and a nanny government

Wow didnt even have score boards that kept score for them. They had to keep it themselves. Oh these videos are so great
Musto never took off those sunglasses did he
I wasn’t born until 1992, so seeing stuff like this is pretty interesting. You can tell it was definitely a different time then.
Very good singing. Opera.
The guy @7:42 has an excellent singing voice :-)
All that time I spent at Port Authority and I had NO idea there was a bowling alley
I would have loved to see Nelson bowl. 💜💚💙🧡❤
I believe that's a lady this is bowling at the last part of the video. I could be wrong, I just loved that suit she's wearing.

That hotdog machine is still turning somewhere in a macabre parody of life.
Love the Holden Caulfied hat.
Michael Musto is 65! Holy fuck.
"LOOK LOOK AIDS" "Its a hickey" interesting to see how serious they took things. Or how lightly they took life.
Aids was a death sentece then, no meds. People were used to it, loads of the gay community believe they wont live long and they will get it eventually. it was a part of their life.

Pinball machine worth 1000000 $ today haha
So nelson died? Is this true? Then who uploaded these videos in this channel?
Nelson died from a Heart attack back in 1989. His childhood friend, Dick, who is seen in his videos maintains the channel and uploads the videos.
John Brennan
He died 28 years ago? Holy shit

are you ok?
who owns this account???
I think I read somewhere that his videos have been archived by a university (NYU ?) and that school posts the 5ninthavenueproject videos.
Dick Richards, a childhood friend of Nelson's who is seen in a lot of the videos. He's been digitally transferring and editing Nelson's archive on this UA-cam channel for over 10 years.
Mike Gooch how can I locate Dick Richards to tell him thank you for posting sooooo much of Nelson's awesome vlogging?
Dick Richards (& others who comprised 5ninthavenueproject) donated Nelsons video archives to NYU in 2012.
gabbax2hey77 but why would he do that? Why doesn't Dick keep sll of Nelson's videos?
Dam ur cool what about the videos in the 90s
Nelson passed in '89
17cents so expensive for 1986

Michael Musto is so lame and uncool in any decade.
Why are you guys hating Musto so much? Think positive.
Bowling alley at a bus station?, weird.
