  • This is a short clip of three ex-PRR PC and Amtrak GG1's passing with the Leslie A-200 horns blasting. There has been a good many inquiries of what the GG-1's horn sounds like. First clip is a South Amboy on the NY&LB, the other two clips are on the NEC at North Elizabeth, NJ Station. Clips where taken with a Kodak 8mm sound movie camera in 1977. Thanks for watching. Seeing GG1s dating from the 1930s and 40s in action, along with passenger equipment dating from the 1908-1930s still in service in the 70s was something I wish I could of seen myself, in person. Great videos like this exist, so we can enjoy the action again and again.

      @@vincentdow5899 Part of that was because the 70s was a really bad time for American railroads- most of them didn't have the money to replace that stuff, so as long as it still worked and was more or less railworthy, they ran it.

    To Jerry Wick. The GG-1 was for its time the best locomotive I have ever run. Here's why. Catenary wire to pantograph to transformer to traction motors. Also what many may not know. The GG-1 had spoke wheels,in between the spokes were ticklers(teasers),that were used to start the GG-1 moving. The GG-1had A.C. Traction motors. When you start to get the GG-1 moving the ticklers would get the GG-1 moving, until around 15 mph then the traction motors would kick in. You would know this happened by the tap switches kicking in. If you were on the # 1 end of the GG-1 you could plainly here the tap switches engaging, by the loud popping noise they would make. I never in my career of running the GG-1, not being able to make it from point A to Point B

      @@JamesEllison69 The G was rated at 4620 HP continuous, but like all electric locomotives could exceed that rating for short periods. Often that was double the continuous rating, and then some, for 10-15 minutes. At that rate a G could easily break 10,000 HP!

    Classic Leslie A-200 horn that was also used on many of our early streamlined diesel locomotives. I've always liked this horn. Some refer to these as blats. The nickname "Honkers" has been catching on over the years and seems more accurate as it's a metaphoric reminder of the sound that large geese make.

I told him to pay attention to those beauties, that he will never see one operating again. He has never forgotten. I cab rode aboard PRR 4800 (then Conrail 4800 in her bicentennial livery). And the one thing I remember from my childhood the most is blowing 4800’s horn when we approached grade crossings. My uncle first worked on the electrics - GG1’s and E44’s and got to take the throttle and shuffle them around the yard to the maintenance area. There are 15 saved from the scraper, including the protoype #4800. It was built by Baldwin Locomotive works in their tender shop. I will take a look around for them and send you copies of I can find them.Also when NJT formed they had acquired some E-44S that were stored at Elisabeth Port N.J. They are probably still there. Keep in contact. I miss working for the railroad. P.S. I don't recall the GG-1s having any logo on them after Conrail formed. @nukinfuts1000 No C&O U30C's. Sorry, wish I did. Have a C&O U25B somewhere, and a U30B in CSX paint. Thanks for watching...

    The iconic Leslie A-200. Not exactly melodious like my favorite five chimes on the Southern an ACL, but unique in their own way!

    Great catches. Wish I'd had a chance to ride behind one of these. Are any running today?

    At 0:08-0:12 is that green car behind the GG1 a de-motored MP54?

    Where's the one that sports the seal that says, "Buy US Savings Bonds"? I remember that GG1 and waited for it to come up the tracks.

    Great video! would you by some chance have recordings of the MP54 electrics with motor sound captured?

    • @1jackdk
      @1jackdk  8 років тому +2

      +David H. Thanks Dave. I only have one short clip of the MP54's. Stupid me! I saw them all the time, and when I was filming this stuff back in the 70's, a Super 8mm sound cartridge, only held 3-1/2 minutes of film. Even back then, to buy the filnm and process it was expensive. So I saved the film for G, E33, E44 powered trains. YES! Now I'm kicking myself...Thanks for watching...

      +jackmp294.5™ Sadly, whatever is left in preservation of the MP54s, E33s, E44s, and GG1s will likely never operate again, due to a lot of factors. The NEC is still for the most part at 11, 000 volts. I've been trying to find Green New Haven MUs in action, being fully aware that one car is known to have survived.

    Are any of the preserved GG1's operating?

    • @robby062
      @robby062 5 років тому +1

      None are operational. 4935, which is in Strasburg PA, is the only one which may still have it’s original transformers. The transformers contained oil which contained PCB’s and were drained and most have had them removed. Also, they are no longer electrically compatible with the NEC due to current changes, which was another reason they were retired.

    Hey wait a sec! That last GG-1 is "Big Red", No. 4877!

      Long before it became "Big Red", which was in 1981. From then until her retirement in October 1983, she was the pride and joy of engineer Cliff Underwood, who wrote a song about her. Part of the 1984 movie "GG1: An American Classic", available on YT in 4 parts, starting with ua-cam.com/video/tC6W0XEqOLw/v-deo.html
