My dad was a black cabbie for 47 years, and he retired about 10 years ago. He was the cabbie that Tommy Cooper put a little brown envelope into Dad's shirt pocket and said, "Have a drink on me, cabbie. "..
My old man opened it and it was a tea bag.
He picked up Princess Diana a few times, Brian Moore, Eric Morecombe, kicked Kyle Minogue out because she was so drunk and mouthy with her hubby, picked up Clint Eastwood and John Cleese in the same week.
He asked Clint for an autograph, and Clint said, "I'll shake your hand, don't do autographs."
Timothy Spall, Spike Milligan. These are the ones I can recall.
He found a huge bag of jewellery and brought it home. It was like an Addidas sports bag full... he handed it in, and it turned was it was from a hotel room robbery of Liz Taylor she never even gave him a thank you.

My dad was a London taxi driver make no mistake the knowledge is one hard nut to crack you have to memorise 25000 streets and know all the points of interest and all the one way systems and no entry’s and one way streets everything. Extremely tough and difficult to do

decades ago, I drove a Yellow Cab out of Greenwich, South London. These were black cabs painted yellow, but were actually minicabs. The black cab community was up in arms about it. I remember being chased by group of cabs near Little Venice, the same along the Embankment, and a black cab tried to run me into some roadworks along the Old Kent Road. One day, I was parked up in Greenwich, when a black cab pulled up behind and the driver got out and came towards me. He tapped on my window and I pulled it down, expecting some hassle. He had tears in his eyes, saying, 'mate, this was my first cab, I can't believe it's still going, do you mind if I have a sit down in it? It was a 1972 Austin taxi. He was in the driver's seat, reminiscing, and I was leaning on the door window listening, when a car load of police turned up, thinking there was some trouble! 😂

In the chaos of the Grenfell Tower fire, firefighters' fire engines were unable to leave the scene, and firefighters could not return to their fire stations when going off duty. Black cabbies transported devastated firefighters back to their stations across the capital FOR NO CHARGE.

There's a TAXI war brewing here in Blackpool between the established drivers and the 'other mob'
My dad was a cab driver back in the day, everyone knew my dad, when he'd had enough of driving he went into the office working as a radio operator, he worked for em all and was massively respected. It was a different game then, up and down the prom "a pound a lump to the Tower or the Pleasure Beach". His fellow drivers were salt of the earth, proper honest hard working guys.
His partener Brian refused a fair at a Political Party Conference, a guy was getting in the cab with his dog "your'e not getting in this cab pal it's just been valeted" Imperial Hotel driver thank you "i said you're not getting in here with that dog get the one behind" - "Do you know who i am ? i'll have you're badge" it was only David Blunkett, he got another cab 🤣 and Brian was never gonna lose his badge 🤣🤣
    Great conversation guys.

Blackpool Private hire drivers are stupid, I have a Manchester private hire vehicle, took my kids (4 and 2) last week only to be “followed” by a private hire driver, I pulled to the side on the promenade 16:55 and the driver pulled next to me and started to give me a “lecture” over where my stickers were, tried to explain look at my kids and now you can F off, what amazed me more than him being blind and stupid, he worked for Wolverhampton 😂😂😂 wtf is going on life

Have massive respect for you and also having stuff like this in the public domain and representing the black cab trade (I gave up) didn’t have it in me, biggest regret I have although I can still call Manor House station to Gibson road. Many years ago I was flying out to Mexico with a n ex girlfriend and had to fly out of London so we got the train from SW and booked a posh hotel for the night. We took a cab from the hotel to Gordon Ramseys 1st restaurant in Chelsea as I managed to secure a table for lunch as dinner was fully booked. This was early in Ramseys solo career and only had a handful of documentaries about him. The taxi driver said the price on the meter and I gave him a large tip to which he replied “No your ok guv, you will facking need that in their”.
Apart from Gordon coming out the kitchen and shaking my hand whilst we were waiting in the lounge area for our table to be ready the taxi driver made my day 😎

i book a black cab from surrey in to london here and there when i need too if trains are up the creek, way better bunch, always arrive early for pick up, always polite, always safe. you got admires of the trade that are younger than 30 than that grew up with the older generation your forgetting about, although not all have the financial ability to just jump in black cabs when they want which is why it seems less in my opinion. certain points of this bought me to tears, fairly close to home story, love your interview skills.. as a cyclist/cycle courier i prefer the road than cycle lanes every day of the week if im in town i do 250 miles a week average on a single speed bike i witnessed the first few major cyclist deaths around elephant and up towards st pancreas station of cyclists vs 16 ton bulk trucks, deffo teaches you to stop at a damn red light, i hate commuter's on bikes with more passion than i should borris bikes are a different story god damn

When the black cabs were driving people for free and Ubers system put a surge price on, what was stopping those Uber drivers from turning their app off and getting those people to safety for nothing?

As a lone female walking through London in the early hours of the morning, I was being followed by 2 men.
Unbeknownst to me a black cabby was watching and knew I was in danger in the area we were. As the 2 men tried to grab me, the cabby sped up on the pavement, jumped out and pushed the 2 men over chucked me in the cab, then took a bit of a beating then managed to get back in the cab and we sped off..
If it hadn't been for the vigilance of the cabby I dread to think what would have happened to me..
I will always trust and choose a black cab over the tube or bus !!!

Yea but according to some of the wankers on this post it’s just cheaper to get an Uber. Glad you’re safe.

@@CrazyGingerCabbiethese people choose convenience that will turn on them eventually. When Uber takes over it can ban political dissidents from using the service. They’ll also charge a higher amount when they take out the competition

@@LiClan these particular people aren’t interested in education my friend. They rather spout bollox about cabbies not taking card or being flash or not moving with the times. When there was a black cab app 3 years before U-Shite rolled into town.
Yea but yea but yea but. These people are nothing but ‘yea but’ charlatans. The ONLY reason they get u*** is because it WAS hell of a lot cheaper. Now there’s not much in it. So instead they say ‘yea but the convenience of seeing them on my phone’. 🤣 wankers.
As I said ‘yea but’ charlatans.
Rant (another one) done. And brreeaatthhee.
