    Hello Scott, thank you for your questions. The planer will sometimes trip when it hits the bottom. Larger planers are more prone to do so. Number 2 planers typically will bump for a few seconds before tripping from my experience. I first place my lure in the water, slowly letting down my leader to prevent tangles, once the leader is straight behind the boat I will then place the planer in the water. Knowing witch line to use is probably more important than knowing the diameter.

    Awesome video. I have always had trouble using a planer. This video helped me out. Great job

    Hey Joshua, have you ever fished for king mackerel and Spanish mackerel using planers?

  • @Saltyscales
    @Saltyscales  11 років тому

    Hello, let out line until it bumps the bottom. Once it bumps the bottom, turn the reel handle a couple times to pull it just off the bottom.

    Almost all of the super braids are very thin and will be suitable, I like 60-80lb test braid. I fish between 25-35 feet primarily in my area, therefore a number 2 planer is sufficient in most instances. Let out enough line until you feel the planer hit the bottom, before it trips reel in a couple yards of line. This will allow you to find that optimal strike zone. If the planer trips, try and give it a snap of the rod to reset the planer without having to reel up the line. Typically this works.

    Thanks Josh for the video. New to the Tampa bay and gulf. Can you tell me what wind or conditions to avoid rough water in the bay and gulf? I don’t want to make all the preparations only yo find rough seas. Thank you

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  2 роки тому

      Nothing over 10 knots, especially coming out of the north. You also want to watch the tides, if they are colliding with the wind it makes for rough seas.

    Was curious about using planets in the TB shipping channel. The video was very informative but I have a question. When you hook the fish and reel it in, once the planet reaches your rods tip, how do you continue to reel it in? With 15’ of leader, you don’t just grab the line with gloves and pull it in do you?

    Joshua I purchased a #3 planer , followed all instructions with respect to lead. etc and connected to planer & drone spoon to my penn trolling reel (80 lb nylon)and released the planer for approximately 30 ft at our usual trolling speed. The tension created by the planer was incredible and too much for the reel. I tried pulling in the line manually and it was really tough using both hands. Is this normal??????

      +ReelDistractionAction You're welcome, try that longer leader out, use braid for the main line. Just make sure you are getting the lure down in the strike zone.

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  7 років тому

      Hello Racin Ray, the depth would be 5-12 feet for a #1.

    Joshua, First time using any type of planer.... I purchased a #2 Planer (wanted #3 but they were out) that was "pre-rigged" with 30 ft of "leader" attached to the ring that you stated attaches to the Rod. It also came with two snap swivels attached to a barrel swivel and a bunch of rubber bands????? I'm assuming this set is for a traditional downrigger which I don't have. What's the best way to utilize this rig or should I just remove the leader line and connect directly to my rod like your video? Also, I'll be trolling about 6-7 knots and using this as part of my spread for Dolphin. how deep can I expect this to go down?

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  8 років тому

      +StingRayNet Hello, I never like anything pre-rigged from the store but it's a preference. I would set it up the way I showed in the video. Number two planers can dive from 15 to 25 feet depending the certain variables such as line, speed etc...

      +StingRayNet Joshua. My first attempt with the planer wasn't very successful. I was using about 6 ft leader and was told by some experience anglers that I should be using around 30 ft. I believe you recommended about half that length. Either way, my concern was what to do when I've reeled in to the planner and still have 15-30 ft of line with a fish on the end? I'm assuming it's put on the gloves and try to land this fish?

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  8 років тому

      +StingRayNet You are correct, try different leader lengths, 15-30 feet is ideal. Unfortunately that is one of the downsides to planer fishing, reel until you get to the planer and then hand line the fish in.

    • @johnr.7595

      You would be better off with planer boards than this style. You can set up different spreads this way and keep them at different depths depending on your territory. Have caught many a Strip Bass in Lake Cumberland with these out back!

    My 1st time out and now my 2nd, I'm unsure of how far to let the line and planer out behind the boat. And what to set the drag at. My brain tried both short length and really far behind boat lengths... Again, any recommendation or proper length to let it sink to?

    • @johnr.7595
      @johnr.7595 4 роки тому

      The farther out back the better....boats make noise fish dont like noise get it? So 100yrds then the extra length of the leader. Obviously this is all depending on the water depth and the area you fish but the further from the boat the better...

    what areas of the shipping channel do you troll? I was out there the other day on the west and east side of the bridge and didn't mark any structure. Maybe I was too close to or inside the channel? can you give a general idea? thx

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  8 років тому +1

      We literally troll the entire channel, spending time out there will allow you to find the sweet spots. Sometimes they are not right on the ledge but off of the channel 15 yards or so.

    Can you stop the planer from hitting the ground ?? For example i'm fishing in 40ft depth water how can I keep the planer at say 20ft, because I may not get a bite right away, it may take 10,15, minutes, wouldn't the planer keep diving to the ground and how long will it take to hit the ground??

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  9 років тому

      diondamian20@yahoo.com The amount of line that you let out controls the depths. Unless you are fishing a flat bottom it would be hard to prevent it from hitting. I typically let out line until the planer trips and then real up a few yards and reset it. You want the bait to be close to the bottom for grouper etc...

    Hello Joshua,
    I would like to know if a shock leader of 200-400lbs is needed for kingfishing with a size 3 planer and a size 3 drone spoon. I thought that with a 80lbs mono I was ok... What do you think?
    Thanks

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  7 років тому

      Hello,
      80lbs would be more than sufficient, 50lb mono will work also. On my light spinning kingfish setups I run 20lb mono

      +Skymark Productions Hello Skymarj,
      The #8 is a high speed planer it will dive from 10-40 feet depending on the amount of line let out and speed.

    Doesn't the planer trip when it hits the bottom? How do you put the planer in the water? Lure first? Planer first? Since we all know size matters, what diameter line, with what size planer, and how much line out - to get to what depth?

  • @NicksterFL75
    @NicksterFL75 8 років тому

    how do you know how much line to let out with the planer so it's just above the bottom?

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  8 років тому +2

      Hello Nick, I Iet out line until it trips and then I reel up a few feet and then reset it with a couple quick snaps of the rod.

      I think the most important thing is the speed, go too fast and you trip the planer, go too slow and drag the bottom. Find the right speed and you will get the strikes.
