@@theWheezy i feel like cod needs to continue on with black ops, like bo4 was just a multiplayer base game yeah they had new characters but we only got too see there back stories, plus they need a call of duty: ghosts 2. The ending of the movie is just shows that rorke didn't die and he says as he takes Logan away there's an end scene of Logan in the amazon captured and being brain washed to turn against the ghosts like the federation did to rorke. Like we don't need a new story about world war we need modern warfare 4, advanced warfare 2, or ghosts 2 they need to continue on previous stories like they did in the past like what happend to that. Modern wardare was just a different story line and vangaurd is just about war and new characters they no one cares about.
there was nothing like waking up on a saturday morning and hopping on der riese or kino w the boys, or playing micheal myers late friday night on highrise or terminal. i think MW2019 was almost a return to form, but warzone completely ruined what chance that game had to blossom.
The first year of Warzone was awesome, but Cold War / Vanguard and their integration into Warzone were the last nail in the coffin in my opinion.

The older CODs had something special with their more laid back modes. We’re really missing out when they don’t add in stuff like infected and nail their zombies mode.
Blackout was way better it's quite a shame warzone blew up more

I think the downfall of CoD started with the supply drops and monetization of Advanced Warfare, those five years of Activision gripping the throats of Sledgehammer, Infinity Ward, and Treyarch to monetize and push out these game regardless of if they were ready or even good. Loot boxes, season passes, bundles, etc., all of them were overpriced, and all of them were predatory.
The focus shifted from “How do we make these games as good as possible so that their quality is what drives the sales and our profits?” to “How can we tempt people into investing as much money as possible into one game in order to maximize profits? How can we put less effort in, and get the most reward out of our products?”
It was only the backlash of Black Ops 4’s lack of care, and the sheer ridiculous predatory monetization that convinced Activision to loosen its grip, and tone down the monetization in Modern Warfare. And then Vanguard came out, a game that signifies Activision and Sledgehammer’s lack of care for the franchise and the community. But fear not, hope is on the horizon my friends.
yep futuristic movement and loot boxes etc killed the game then they even added sbmm in to it so campers can feel better
Personally I don’t think the season passes are overpriced. Yes they should offer more but if I get cosmetics and other cool items and don’t have to pay for Maps im all for it! Dropping charging for maps and replacing that with Season passes is by far the best thing to happen to CoD/the Community.

I’m gonna take it a step further here. After the backlash the gaming developers got as a whole for the whole loot box craze, COD had to reinvent that wheel in order to maintain/replicate the numbers that they were doing. That reinvention was SBMM.
Everyone raves about MW19 for its masterfully curated gameplay and attention to detail. But what a lot of people don’t discuss in that is the beginning of an extremely thick layer of SBMM. The SBMM in MW19 was game breaking…
SBMM was definitely present in previous CODs before then like Advanced Warefare and BO4. But it was NOWHERE near as bad and obvious as MW19 and CW was (with CW being the absolute worst of the time)
Combine that with the division of the community that WZ created (Dividing the MP and Battle Royale/WZ fanboys) out spawned the state of COD as we know it.
Covid didn’t make things any easier either but that imo is my rough synopsis of how we ended up here…

I'm honestly just so sick and tired of BR games. For me COD was such a gem because it was just an easy to play arcade shooter. 2019 Modern Warfare had so much potential of going back to COD roots.....then came Warzone

Yeah. And some map designs were terrible. You were exposed from 5 angles at all times. They should have more or less remade all the good mw1 mw2 maps. Such as crossfire

@@TheGamingChad. As much as I love MW1 a game full of nothing but remakes makes little sense. People want new maps with a remaster here and there. Alpha Omega is NOTHING like Nuketown zombies but the community collectively got upset about supposedly getting the same map. Same applies to MP. People see to want Jungle, Firing Range, Nuketown, Summit, and Raid. In my experience most others remasters are met with flak

COD used to be the game that all other FPS's copied. Then that changed. The devs got lazy, the studio got greedy, the games got stale, repetitive, broken and boring.
COD has always been like that COD hasn't changed.
I gotta be honest MW2019 was the one time I’ve felt like I was back in the BO2 days where I grew up and I still find myself playing that game 3 years later. I was big fan of advanced warfare it was new to the COD world but it should’ve stopped there they juiced it with infinite and BO3. I really appreciate this video man it sums up how I feel

Advanced warfare was very underrated. I understand why people do not like it but I really enjoyed that game honestly.
This is way better than those crappy pessimistic COD reviews where they only talk about what made them happy and only caring about their opinion and their memories rather than actually looking at the community, you actually pinpointed the reason COD was loved and why COD is declining without any outside bias and you have done extremely good with your first retrospective and I look forward to seeing more of your content.

Very well made video. Second time I thank Ytb for their recommendations. I will be forever sad until they somehow bring back the old days. This is my dream rn and for that, you got a new subscriber. I was 7 years old when I played CoD 2 for the first time in 2009 on my PSP. Then I jumped directly in CoD4:MW on PS2 and it was more than amazing. I don't think words can describe how much fun I had on the BO games especially, up to BO3 (included), BO3 being my favourite CoD to this day. And now I am 20 and I still can't get over the fact that it has been 6 years now since I have last stayed up until 4 am in the morning to play BO3 with my friends. I still remember that night and I am still waiting for the next one...
Warzone ruined call of duty. It seriously did. The way people played the game completely changed, therefore ruining multiplayer. This video is almost hate on the “new cod” yet Cold War war was god awful. modern warfare 2019 was the light in the tunnel and was ruined by Cold War. Then the updates slowly came slower in modern warfare, and that game went to shit. It’s almost like nostalgia does not exist for cod players. It was the biggest game back then. Everyone was playing it, and it was super fun. It’s not the same anymore. We all grew up, miss the players we used to play with. It’s all the shit. I can agree how he does imply that it isn’t just nostalgia, which I partially agree with. However micro transactions started way before the downfall of cod happened. Decent video and I agree that they’re just trying to have us buy all the shit micro transactions. The developers are really trying in vanguard. It’s just the greediness of the company.
Maybe the newer MW2 will get us back in better light since their previous one was pretty dang good considering the state COD has been in. Microtransactions did start before the downfall of COD, I still believe they had an impact and led to the greedy side of everything which eventually led to the state we are in now.

Ridiculous to blame Warzone for bad multiplayer
On some real tho, cod was good when there wasn’t specific characters and instead just sides with soldiers, no specialist abilities, great guns to level and have fun with, great maps, no micro transactions, no silly outfits like swim trunks in the middle of war, etc. I didn’t mind the futuristic aspect for a couple games but they relied on it too much for awhile then we got the masterpiece modern warfare 2019 which still has things that arnt really that cool but gameplay wise brought back my old cod friends. Now their just trying to do games set in the last more which I personally am not a fan of because now there’s like 4 games set in ww2
i think earning cosmetics is cool to show ur skill but battles passes and shit is too much other than that i miss everthing before bo3

Great video man, hearing you talk so passionately about COD brings back great memories. I grew up on MW2 & BO1 and I’ll alway have those memories, some of the best I’ve ever had.

I grew up starting with COD 3 and it was all good up until BO3. BO3 was the last decent COD game we’ve gotten in my personal opinion, a lot of people knew it was going downhill after that game in my social circle but what does everyone else here think?
Same here. Grew up wit cod 3 but really started playing when cod 4 came out. I like to call cod 4 to bo2 “the golden age of cod” as does pretty much everyone else. I sorta agree wit you on the fact that bo3 was the last decent cod, but mw2019 was to me a really good game. A well executed story mode and a relatively good online. From Cod AW to the Vanguard, I think I played mw 2019 the most compared to AW to Vanguard combined.
I am essentially right there with you. BO3 was the last great one for me, love the new Modern Warfare too, but it doesn't hit the same for me. Still a great game though.

@@victor_734 an unpopular opinion but I agree, I hit level 1000 and put roughly 850 hours into the multiplayer (35 days). By comparison I only put 5 days in MW2 and 3 days into bo1 and that was a shared account with my brother. I still love the old games of course but BO3 is geninely some of the most fun I've ever had in both multiplayer and zombies.
I just miss how the community was back then whether it be on the game or on UA-cam/twitch. Trickshotting community, sniping community, pub stomping community etc. felt like we were a lot more connected back then and something that helped was forced game chat. I honestly think cod would’ve been better off maybe if we stayed on console? Should’ve made it crossplay between Xbox and PlayStation? Idk just my opinion. And for micro transactions goes I liked how when there was only camos on the store and they were only a couple bucks and would go on every single weapon. Very simple but I genuinely think the camos on bo2 are better than the ones now! Which is pretty sad to think about. I liked the special releases of map packs and the game being so hyped when map pack dropped and everyone trying out the new gun. Feel like cod is missing the simplicity and trying to be something they’re not

The community was influential in several different ways back then, nowadays personalities while playing Warzone are much more preferred. It's not as laid back. Crossplay I don't think caused any issues, just opened up possibilities between peeps and sparked the whole controller vs MnK debate. I heavily agree on the camos, BO2 had the best. You could buy some for real cheap and they were stellar! Not enough talk on that, they were awesome! I also agree on DLCs, I'd much rather buy them if they are going to dump more effort into them.

The last COD I actually used to play for hours and enjoyed was BO4 the gun play in the multiplayer was good.

It's all still there, I got MW2019 recently again (I made a switch from Xbox to PC so had to buy again 🙃) and it seems much more alive and enjoyable than Vanguard & Cold War

This was a great video man! it encompasses what we all feel as CoD fans. I really hope Microsoft gets this acquisition and turns things around for CoD. I didn't buy Vanguard and i am so glad i didn't. We have nostalgia for those old games because the devs used to have passion for making these games. It's not their fault though because Activision just rushes them to make these games and gives them no creative freedom. I subscribed and i think you deserve more subs man. Very well made video!
I'm right there with most COD fans, so I am glad I could share my perspectives into a compiled video for everyone. I agree with your point on our nostalgia, I couldn't imagine me in 10 years talking about Vanguard and how much I missed it, people use nostalgia against us like it gets us stuck in the past, which it certainly can. A lot will miss the point though, we cared and we loved those creations, personally I express my nostalgic feelings towards these games because I want to see them in a better light like they once were. And I know they were. They certainly weren't perfect, but I think anyone could come to the agreement that they were special

Well made video! I think it would of been a great add on to the video to see the actual statistics of each game to see how many people bought them, continue to play, and which games made the most/ least money. That could of been a better visual to make a debate on which CoD started the decline. My personal opinion, I never liked the futuristic feel, so at the start of advance warfare I felt like the decline started still. But the way we CoD players dealt with it was we continued to play the old CODs for many years. Definitely the sense of community made COD so enjoyable. I was part of the trickshotting community for many years. I do not believe our generation of COD players will feel like how we used to ever again. It will be the new generation.
I did try diving into how many active current players there were for a game but I just couldn’t find real data anywhere, maybe there’s a simple place for all that. Wasn’t into cod in the golden era, but I remember how excited I was getting up at 6 am to grind for gold guns on mw2. Don’t think there’ll ever be something like that again.

This was a great video, and was thinking of doing a similar video. But I disagree with one thing... I don't think CoD will ever be the same, especially since Microsoft bought the franchise. One of the golden memories of CoD was the simplicity, forced game chat, and the ease of making new friends. Ever since trolling and trash talking, Microsoft took it very seriously and removed forced game chat for the Xbox One. Ever since, the game may have been fun but the talkative lobbies were never there since Ghosts on the 360.
It is hard to get those times back, the world as a whole I think shaped the whole game chat thing. Times have changed incredibly fast compared to back then
It doesn’t matter, back when game chat was prioritized most people didn’t have iphones/popularized social media so game chat was destined to die regardless of any xbox decision. Absolutely do not kid yourself ok?
I feel like the current state of COD came from fatigue from BOCW and Vanguard rocky launches, the studios getting crunched as hell, and the adapting to a live service. COD can work as a live service. MW'19, Cold War Zombies, and Year 1 of Warzone (despite being flawed), was one of the best experiences I have played in a multiplayer game. I do feel like the series needs to fully drop the annualized sequel, let the devs take their time on the game, and figure out what work and didn't with not just the newer titles, but from all three eras of COD (Golden: Cod 4-Ghosts, Advanced: AW-BO4, and Warzone: MW-VG).
Anyway, great video on the subject man. I may be a MW fanboy myself, but I do feel like the series needs to find it's core identity again.
Oh for sure Jason, all around it's a collective effort making COD it is the way now. After Modern Warfare 2 (2022), the games won't be annual anymore, or they are at least giving extra time for the next one.

Pretty much cod right now honestly. I've been playing cod since the OG MW and honestly its sad how the games are now compared to its golden era. Most people will say its nostalgia but you can't deny the fact the games were way more polished and complete compared to the recent titles. One other thing I don't get is back in the earlier days of cod we only had 2 studios pushing out amazing games. Now there's multiple studios and they're nowhere close to creating cods on the same quality scale as before. Creators that have been around since the beginning have also been kinda brain washed with the recent titles. They hope the games will improve and want people to give the games a chance but we all know it's never gonna improve.
An excellent summary of the the situation Wheezy! CoD barrelling at top pace down a slippery slope with no brakes trying to chase the micro transaction market was the end for me. MW was at least semi-cool when it released a few short years ago, but then came Warzone, Black Ops and Vanguard. I've torn up my life membership to both CoD and BF. You summed it all up in one word Wheezy..... GREED!

I feels like the vibe began to change in late 2013, when CoD Ghosts, the Xbox One, and Playstation 4 were released (although, I don't think the impact was felt until early/mid 2014), because the vibe of the Xbox One just wasn't 'it', and CoD began feeling different. I think these reasons motivated the CoD console community to shift from console to PC, which as a result that marked the beginning of the end for the vibe we all knew and loved.
It went from coming home from school/college, having little responsibilities, hopping on the Xbox 360 (or PS3) with friends (some of which you were closer with than friends IRL), making new friends, laughing, joking, crying, raging, sweating, relaxing, sending text and voice messages, using party chat and private chat, speaking (or being toxic lol) in lobbies and in-game, using Skype, and switching between CoD games and gamemodes. To coming home from uni/work, having many responsibilities (such as bills), hopping on the PC (different vibe), using Discord or TeamSpeak, and playing CoD games that had lost their touch.
I agree with you everyone has a different point when COD declined and mine was Mw3/BO2. MW3 had some great things but it was the first time it felt like COD just tried to Copy and Paste MW2. Then BO2, even though a fan favorite, it introduced futuristic game play. AW/IW are awful in a lot of ways, Ghost had bad map design, BO3 had supply crates and not the best multiplayer but the zombies were some of the best, BO4 ruined zombies but multiplayer was playable, MW2019 again another poor map design, then Cold War had numerous bugs, vanguard is well Vanguard. I think futurism is what ruined Cod back in 2012 but right now I think it's Warzone that is ruining cod even though it's still insanely popular.
Bo2 had terrible terrible mp maps. Only the boat map and the house with the Ferraris were good. Killstreaks were neat too. I only have 100 hours on BO2...

I wouldn't say the futuristic theme killed cod, maybe for you but for others that wasn't the case.bo3 was really popular, I personally loved everything, the multilayer with unique operators with unique specialist abilities was really cool the campaign was fun it was a confusing at a point but once you understood the story it made the campaign even better and well the zombies was just the best. AW wasn't that bad they tried smth new I guess i didn't enjoy it too much I'll admit that but ehh the cod community said they wanted smth new and that's what they got so not complaining and IW also wasn't that bad the whole space theme was really cool
I liked IW for the first 3 months. I enjoyed MW2019 for quite a while. Ghost was the first CoD I actually owned the console for so I really liked it the guns were great but I agree the maps weren't good.
Edit: Oh used to also love warzone as well it could be a pain at times but it was fun.
As a whole I think older CODs are very overrated and newer ones are way too criticized. COD is practically always the same run and gun yeah there are new game modes but COD has always just been a shooter with bad movement. COD has always rewarded bad players.

I will give all call of duty’s that they have the best campaigns some are better then others yeah but they were actually good and told a pretty kick ass story.

Battlefield is a franchise that’s actually in a bad state right now. The boomer cod 4 circle jerkers are living in denial. COD as of now is in good state especially with MW2022 coming out. I wish these guys would admit they like don’t what cod is now, but there is no point acting like the franchise is dying. Cod is is being marketed to a new audience of gamers, if the cod 4 circle jerkers don’t like it, too bad.
I'll leave it in the potentials list, I need to dabble myself more in Battlefield before I can talk about their game. I haven't grown up with it as much so I need that experience first.

10 years ago the last good call of duty was released. BO2.
Even after Ghosts was released BO2 was still pulling in more players. I do remember though around the time Ghosts was released the next gen of consoles came out, which also didn’t help the community as not everyone could outlay for a new console so they stuck to the old generation and presumably they stopped playing all together.
Bo2 is the best cod but not the last good one. Bo3 and Bo4 are also great and good cods

Fantastic video chief, i really agree with this one and i knew it wasn't just Nostalgia because i have a similar type of feeling and admiration/love for Battlefield, now i'm talking before 2042, but my point is that when playing Battlefield V, i still mostly felt like i was having a ton of fun, similar to how i did all the way back during Bad Company 2 or Battlefield 3, but Call of Duty wasn't like that. Black Ops 2 was amazing and the last great Call of Duty, tho Ghosts gets more flak than i think it deserves, Black Ops 4 however, was the last fun Call of Duty, but also the true decline imo as well, seeing as how many issues it had and how it showed, even when watching people like David Vonderhaar talk about it, how they really weren't able to do what they wanted anymore and how they had kinda... given up, tbh, i already was never a big fan of Battle Royale games, though i did enjoy Fortnite back in the day and i do play a little Apex from time to time, i'm just not a BR guy and Activisions push for a Battle Royale crippled Black Ops 4 in every way, albeit, the game was still pretty fun in the MP, then MW 2019 was pretty bad imo and most of the reason why was also due to a Battle Royale, they made the game way more tactical for that reason and the game also had a lack of content, but at least the story was good, with Cold War, the story was good once again and the game felt a bit more like old school cod in the MP, but definitely not as good as it once was and while Zombies in Cold War was imo, the best it has ever been in many ways, the lack of interesting characters and funny quips from Ultimis/Primis Crews and other Crews did take some of the fun away, but otherwise i thought it was fantastic, but now we're at the point where, Vanguards Story was ridiculous and generic, Vanguards MP is good in terms of the amount of content, the weapons and maps, but it doesn't get enough updates or weapon balancing, every gun can be made to have 0 recoil which destroys the balance and makes it almost impossible to balance anything and the Zombies in Vanguard is the worst we have ever seen, by FAR, it takes all the good stuff away from old school Zombies and even takes away all of the amazing innovations and ideas of Cold War Zombies as well, a shell of it's former self and a stain on the Zombies scene that won't soon be forgotten. I don't have hope for MWII but i will follow the leaks, info and such and i will likely not be buying it at launch, if at all, simply due to the amount of missteps they had with 2019 and because Call of Duty is so out of touch at this point and yet, they're GAINING popularity for it, so clearly there's likely no way that they'll learn the error of their ways. Especially for me, I missed split screen and local multiplayer. Ghost was the first one I couldn’t play with my 2 best friends together.
Advanced warfare was the decline. Not because the devs were experimenting but because respawn entertainment (former infinity ward who created cod) made titanfall and sledgehammer did a horrific copy paste of the movement. Where respawn entertainment’s jet packs and wall running were fluid and clearly integrated in the heart of the game; advanced warfare’s movement felt like an afterthought and at best an attempt at a copy paste to try and capitalize on the series’ former creators’ new titanfall property.

I never looked forward to a game more than BO2 on a Saturday morning, I remember back then, even up to 2016/17, getting all my weapons gold to get diamond. Nothing beat that feeling of a good and balanced weapon arsenal, where no weapon was more powerful than the other, and we saw hella variety. I’m really considering, if and ONLY IF, MW2 is not the game I had hoped for, going back to my PS3 to play BO2 again, nothing has come close to that game. Maybe BO3 but the movement was a very difficult thing for me back then. Like you said, let’s just hope these recent COD titles were a learning experience for them not to do the same thing in the future.

The older cods are the best online experience of my life. Playing black ops 1-2 and mw1-3 with my best friends and dad on the ps3/360. What happened is simple: Activision pushed its greed which resulted in rushed products and the live service model. The original talent left infinity ward and treyarch and we are left with people who have no passion for cod. The last 10 years have been nothing but mediocre shooters that dont come remotely close to capturing the magic of 07-12 cod.
Old cod had expertly written passionate shooters about the horrors of war. Zombies that had a dark atmosphere and story combined with the most fun couch co-op mode ever seen with an addicting arcade style of gameplay. A multiplayer that understood the key of maps-guns-gameplay. Iconic maps, weapons, and addicting gameplay. Insane levels of customization that allowed us to differentiate ourselves. And most important: the community. Hearing all the trash talk, xbox live messages, party chat, it was so much fun. I miss it, every year getting excited for the new cod that was going to blow our minds away. Sadly bo2 was the last one. MW19 restored flickers to the fire, but it wasnt enough.
Thankfully there is 1 hope left for us. In this awful age of modern gaming and cod, MWII is on the way. The engine is beautiful, IW rehired multiple OG infinity ward devs, the campaign is taking notes from the original MW's, and the multiplayer is going to take the best of MW19 and MW2 and hopefully combine it. 3 year dev time + 2 year cycle. This is the last hope for this franchise. hopefully they make it count. If they do, it will be a great experience with friends and the online community to play a well crafted call of duty that blows away most every other current shooter. If not, well, cod has been dead for 10 years at this point. Its ride or die for cod.

I understand why they do it, but I despise it. I'd rather have the randomness of either have easy, average, or hard matches. It's a nice flow that way, and you'll learn from the tougher opponents while having fun with the easier ones.

With us black ops 1-2 and MW 1-3 area of gamers being "grown up" we all still play for a reason I was about 12-13 when I first got bo1 and now I'm 22 still wanting to experience what I once did..... And new generations as well, they just aren't giving an actual chance to see what "our" era had

For me the main issue with the new cod games is that they always have some sort of big issue the community really doesn't like. For example, SBMM being super strict, lobby's breaking up after each game, the map design and bugs. If they introduced the old map style without a bunch of remakes and had less SBMM, the game would feel fresh while still feeling like cod. Great video though I agree with basically everything you said :)

6:37 dude i was playing natch der en toten during this part and i was still on the early rounds, so listening to some of the best times of my childhood life while on this somber map made me depressed. back in the day where only our parents had to worry about inflation... now we have to 😔
The problem was, instead of holding them accountable, the community kept buying every year regardless. Saying oh they'll get it right this year, i believe this studio won't let us down. They saw it and say heh, no matter what we do they'll still buy it, look at how many people despite how it looks and feels still bought vanguard. Oh after some patches the game will be fine...nope. Think about this, at one point you used to see pub stomping, prestige races, people grinding camos etc on twitch. The last 3 years mainly all you seen streaming or youtube is warzone. They don't care about mp, or zombies they know due to this BR craze that's all people care about, they put everything into warzone now and, no matter what videos or post, they know when the new cod comes out, people are going to still buy it. No matter how many thousands stop, there will be millions that still will buy it and play it.

Ever since Ghosts, I've given up all hope in COD and it will never be the same. The series has been milked to death already and I can't see how we will have another COD4, W@W, MW2, or BO1 again. The COD formula has been done too many times already and there can't be any more significant innovation. MW2019 was the closest we got mainly due to the new engine, reload animations, weapon models, etc. but the maps were SHIT. They had to bring back old ones since people complained so much. Name a single map from that game that was memorable like Nuketown or Terminal.
I know I'm being nihilistic as fuck but there is no way in hell we will have the 2007-2012 era again. We grew up with those games so nostalgia is a factor but they were also objectively great. The creative ideas that can be implemented into the COD formula have all been tried.
Let the series die honestly.

But I’ve lost my hope in this game sinds infinity warfare tbh, cod will never be the same for me… I find myself trying to play cod games nowadays and simply stopping after 1 hour because I realize why I never played it anymore in the first place, simply because it sucks balls now… I’m kinda sad about it too, I want a competitive/good working shooter, cod was that for me… but not anymore
MW2019 was possibly CoD’s last chance to return to greatness, albeit in a new way. The hyper-realistic, larger-scale gameplay they experimented with on Ground War should’ve been the main focus of the game, not Warzone. CoD could’ve taken advantage of Battlefield’s fuck-up’s and reeled in its players. As well, I think MW2019 should’ve been the first game that would be focused on over the course of a few years rather than immediately replaced within a year.
If they had done all those things, and then perhaps followed up 2 years later with an actually-good WW2 game that also tried to be hyper-realistic and had Ground War, I bet CoD would be in a really good place rn
