This is a very misleading title. You didn't just "not ascend" him, you skipped the entirety of his personal quest. Of course he's been down in the dumps, you skipped like 30% of his character development altogether, and he's still being hunted. It's valuable to see these scenes too, knowing what happens if the quest is not completed, but your title's wording implies that he's miserable unless ascended, even as a free spawn. That's simply not true.

Do you seriously think that he will be content *in the long run* that he now has to spend an eternity in the dangerous, dark and cold Underdark with Lolth fanatics? What good is such freedom if he is trapped the same way he was trapped with Cazador? Ascended travels the world, sees his own reflection, is no longer slave to his hunger - Spawn is what? Is nice? Has 7,000 new friends who despise him and want to kill everything they see? What does he actually *gain* from sacrificing his own freedom? A chance to be a hero? That is not *for him* that is sacrificing his happiness for the sake of others - why he should he? A chance to heal? How is he going to heal when living in a place he despises, constantly feeling hunted because a mere daylight spell can kill him now? Why can't you think he can heal after the ritual, many years after? I really don't understand this mentality. How can an ENTERNAL life in the misery and shadows is any better than the chance to get everything Cazador took from him and more?
@@Deadpan_Snarker My dudes.... he adventures... He's out there inspiring people by murdering 'the right people'. He's having an absolute blast and accepting that the darkness is part of who he is. And he's not giving up on walking in the sun yet, of course, but he's content with his life if you defeat Cazador but he remains a spawn. He only seems to go to the underdark and his siblings if you break up with him at the end. Give the guy some credit, he's not a damsel in distress and he's good at what he does, even unascended. He literally says he's happy and the most himself he's ever been if you don't ascend him and complete his quest. He says that he's accepted and embraced the shadows as a part of himself, but is in pursuit of finding a way to be in the sun again (which is possible according to dnd lore, he just needs to figure it out). He's proud to be adventuring and having fun while helping people. You kinda missed the point on this one, my guy, or you're just trying to do some mental gymnastics to justify his ascension. His happiest and most fulfilling ending for him is to remain a spawn, to kill Cazador, and to be free. He doesn't HAVE to live in the underdark as a spawn... He sure didn't in my game! He was so happy and fulfilled. It was really beautiful. If that run isn't for you that's valid but you're just incorrect about how he feels as a spawn whose story you complete. (*edited for typo)
I mean I would be miserable too if my friend didn't help me put a stop to someone who was hunting me down and could control me with a single word. Pretty sure if you didn't ascend him and defeated Cazador; he would be in much higher spirits.
Just thought I would add to the comments below... If you actually bothered to help him by killing Cazador then Astarion is quite happy in the epilogue. He hunts bad guys at night and enjoys every minute of it. He decides that owning the dark is not that bad after all.

Otherwise, if you go talk to him during the epilogue, Astarion (as a spawn) himself literally tells Tav how much he's happy with how his life turned out. Are we even playing the same game at this point??

Astarion, in the world of Baldur's Gate, would never openly admit it. He craved omnipotence, freedom, and power, but all he ended up with was a limited version of what he sought.
@@AlexKGB The Gur actually leave a letter saying that he's an inspiration and has definitely changed the way they think about vampirism. He's inspired them to be more accepting of their spawn children's affliction and watch our boy's journey with admiration. Astarion is not lying. He's grown as a person.

I'll never understand why some fans feel the need to lie and act as if Astarion can only be happy if Ascended. This is just straight up ignoring the fact the player did not kill Cazador, for some reason, and that he can be happy as a spawn with or without the player character. I'm glad that the comments are filled with people calling this misinformation out. #getspawned
