To me, it's an exploration of her mind. He, like an astronaut, is exploring her mind and heart and finding that it is polluted and haunted with the different burdens and sadnesses of her life represented by the creatures, all the while her mind is wary of his exploration (the white eyes watching him pass by), fearful of it. As he passes through her mind, darkness follows behind him, like a spider web repairing the pollution of sadness as it passes by. The moon/ her mind can go into a new cycle and at the end he has lifted her burdens and brought about peace. Adore this song and the animation. Its poignantly beautiful. Brilliant work there Gotye and Mr. Cook.

    "Hearts A Mess"
    Pick apart
    The pieces of your heart
    And let me peer inside
    Let me in
Where only your thoughts have been
    Let me occupy your mind
    As you do mine
    Your heart's a mess
    You won't admit to it
    It makes no sense
    But I'm desperate to connect
    You can't live like this
    You have lost
    (Too much love)
    To fear, doubt and distrust
    (It's not enough)
You just threw away the key
    To your heart
    You don't get burned
    ('Cause nothing gets through)
    It makes it easier
    (Easier on you)
But that much more difficult for me
    To make you see…
    Love ain't fair
    So there you are
    My love
    Your heart's a mess
    You won't admit to it
    It makes no sense
    But I'm desperate to connect
And you, you can't live like this
    Your heart's a mess
    You won't admit to it
    It makes no sense
    But I'm desperate to connect
And you can't live like this
    Love ain't safe
You won't get hurt if you stay chaste
    So you can wait
But I don't wanna waste my love

This song is so deep. It has a meaning to it. The pain that is around the world.
Trying to understand ho people live with this and messes there hearts and creates sadness.
    1. The people hurt by the wars ( the veteran )
    2. Animal abuse and taking there homes away ( the sea gal )
    3. Deforestation ( the woodsman )
    4. humans destroying them self's. ( the wrecking ball )
    5. sadness of a pass person ( The skeleton )
    6. Globe warming ( the business man )
This is what i feel the video is trying to show.

This music video used to creep me out when I was little but listening to it now, the song is beautiful when I heard a bit from an interview it caught my intention and I just had to listen to it. Having an open mind to music meanings, when I listened to this song and learned to song meaning behind it, it's beautiful

  • @AhmedKassad

I think this video is amazing. it can be interpreted so many ways. to me its talking about all the things that we do to connect with the rest of the world, from destroying our environment to greed and industrialism. The things that really connects us to the world or to the demands of this day and age, but disconnect us from ourselves and leaves our hearts in a conflict with our minds. IF WE CAN JUST BE IN PEACE WITH OURSELVES, OUR HEARS WOULD NOT BE SUCH A MESS! I wish there was more messages like this to make people look at themselves naked and not hide behind all the shadows. The truth is often not seen or heard, but felt.

Does anyone ever ask what the visual story is, like the state of the arts organ family, or eyes wide open mud people, or the spider creating night and a bunch of weird night creatures following this dancing stick man?

  • @Dragn7
    @Dragn7 10 років тому +8

I used to think this video was just madness. But now I've found some meaning in it. (Whether it's the meaning the creator intended, I have no idea, and kind of doubt it because it's so vague, but anyways....) Could the followers be different pains, or the various things that bring us sadness? The first one with the crutches is physical disability or illness. The serpent man in a suit is work related stresses. The skeleton is grief over lost friends/family. The one with the axe from the shadows is perhaps loneliness or insecurity. I'm not sure about the pelican, though.

i do think i found a new favorite artist...someone he knows is in a desperate situation, he wants to help in any way he can, but the person wont open up...and he doesnt want to waste his love, though how can you love one sided? it doesnt happen. Nothing works that way, and how can someone try so hard only to fail over and over again, how is that fair? to always be striving to make others happy, but never being happy themselves..how can someone sit there and just bottle up all their pain??

The important thing many oldskool musicians seem to be over looking now is that although many might be "more talented & better trained", being a good performer simply isn't enough anymore. You can be an OK musician that plays 1 instrument & can't read music, but play by ear & know how to produce amazing songs like this! This is a feet of creative layering & sampling techniques. Technology allows many to accomplish a defined sound, so playing many instruments accounts for very little.

i love this video! I think he's saying that he's clearing up her heart, by taking away the reasons for her depression. The reasons are injury, children, the unknown, destruction, work and death. The spider is the depression slowly overcoming her, and the planet is her heart. soo creative. awesome vid. :)

I love how soft Gotye is compared to everyone else. I think of his music as a breath of fresh air. So many artists, even if they are any good (like Muse, Foo Fighters, or Weezer, all great bands), try to fill their songs with so much, and they're so loud! While that can be fun for a bit, I like to relax when listening to music, I like to feel at ease. Gotye, especially with this song, does that perfectly. His voice is so soft, so gentle, even when he screams it seems peaceful. I love it.

I showed this vid to my 12 yr old daughter & her friend. They then became obsessed with it, made a little dance to it performed it for me, then they downloaded it on itunes & played it in their art class at school. They said the class listened in silence but ridiculed some other song called 'set fire to the rain'. See, kids know class when they hear it, they're just being spoon fed a lot of crap by the general music industry - we have to make sure they hear this stuff...

main character is the dark of the yin-yang (white dot provided by headphones/earmuffs). its the subconscious speaking to the conscious mind, calling attention to all the elements of life that a busy mind leaves untended (all contained within the heart/soul). the video follows the cycle of the moon, which for centuries has been analogous to a human's life. the subconscious is "desperate to connect" with the conscious mind to become a fully integrated person. NAILED IT!!!!!

When she handed out the lyrics and played the actual song, we shut up. I love this song now, not just because of the tune, but the depth of the meaning because the one the song is directed to sounds like how I used to be. Overall, DAMN GOOD SONG!
