To me, it's an exploration of her mind. He, like an astronaut, is exploring her mind and heart and finding that it is polluted and haunted with the different burdens and sadnesses of her life represented by the creatures, all the while her mind is wary of his exploration (the white eyes watching him pass by), fearful of it. As he passes through her mind, darkness follows behind him, like a spider web repairing the pollution of sadness as it passes by. The moon/ her mind can go into a new cycle and at the end he has lifted her burdens and brought about peace. Adore this song and the animation. Its poignantly beautiful. Brilliant work there Gotye and Mr. Cook.
Just finished watching The Great Gatsby and this song plays at the very end when the credits are rolling....great song....this dude has a tremendous voice
"Hearts A Mess" Pick apart The pieces of your heart And let me peer inside Let me in Where only your thoughts have been Let me occupy your mind As you do mine Your heart's a mess You won't admit to it It makes no sense But I'm desperate to connect You can't live like this You have lost (Too much love) To fear, doubt and distrust (It's not enough) You just threw away the key To your heart You don't get burned ('Cause nothing gets through) It makes it easier (Easier on you) But that much more difficult for me To make you see… Love ain't fair So there you are My love Your heart's a mess You won't admit to it It makes no sense But I'm desperate to connect And you, you can't live like this Your heart's a mess You won't admit to it It makes no sense But I'm desperate to connect And you can't live like this Love ain't safe You won't get hurt if you stay chaste So you can wait But I don't wanna waste my love
This song is so deep. It has a meaning to it. The pain that is around the world. Trying to understand ho people live with this and messes there hearts and creates sadness. 1. The people hurt by the wars ( the veteran ) 2. Animal abuse and taking there homes away ( the sea gal ) 3. Deforestation ( the woodsman ) 4. humans destroying them self's. ( the wrecking ball ) 5. sadness of a pass person ( The skeleton ) 6. Globe warming ( the business man ) This is what i feel the video is trying to show.
This music video used to creep me out when I was little but listening to it now, the song is beautiful when I heard a bit from an interview it caught my intention and I just had to listen to it. Having an open mind to music meanings, when I listened to this song and learned to song meaning behind it, it's beautiful
I think this video is amazing. it can be interpreted so many ways. to me its talking about all the things that we do to connect with the rest of the world, from destroying our environment to greed and industrialism. The things that really connects us to the world or to the demands of this day and age, but disconnect us from ourselves and leaves our hearts in a conflict with our minds. IF WE CAN JUST BE IN PEACE WITH OURSELVES, OUR HEARS WOULD NOT BE SUCH A MESS! I wish there was more messages like this to make people look at themselves naked and not hide behind all the shadows. The truth is often not seen or heard, but felt.
Does anyone ever ask what the visual story is, like the state of the arts organ family, or eyes wide open mud people, or the spider creating night and a bunch of weird night creatures following this dancing stick man?
I used to think this video was just madness. But now I've found some meaning in it. (Whether it's the meaning the creator intended, I have no idea, and kind of doubt it because it's so vague, but anyways....) Could the followers be different pains, or the various things that bring us sadness? The first one with the crutches is physical disability or illness. The serpent man in a suit is work related stresses. The skeleton is grief over lost friends/family. The one with the axe from the shadows is perhaps loneliness or insecurity. I'm not sure about the pelican, though.
Woah... I didn't even think of it that way, these may be all of the things that can destroy someone's life, and also the relationships they have with others
He is something unique. Love the depth and feeling in his sound. Very experimental. Reminds me of peeps like Bonobo, Tricky Massive Attack, Unkle, Allflaws
This song should have rated higher in the Hottest 100 than Somebody. After I'd heard Somebody ten times, I just wanted music to be over, but no matter how many times I listen to this song, I keep finding new things to love. And THAT is the mark of a great song.
i do think i found a new favorite artist...someone he knows is in a desperate situation, he wants to help in any way he can, but the person wont open up...and he doesnt want to waste his love, though how can you love one sided? it doesnt happen. Nothing works that way, and how can someone try so hard only to fail over and over again, how is that fair? to always be striving to make others happy, but never being happy themselves..how can someone sit there and just bottle up all their pain??
@MrDelorean3 the beauty of a video like this is that there is no absolutely right answer analysing the video, i encourage you to think about what it means to you.
this song and "somebody that i used to know" are my favourites now... this guy is so amazing ! he is doing a great job and i think there is still hope for this new music generation ! Love it!
The important thing many oldskool musicians seem to be over looking now is that although many might be "more talented & better trained", being a good performer simply isn't enough anymore. You can be an OK musician that plays 1 instrument & can't read music, but play by ear & know how to produce amazing songs like this! This is a feet of creative layering & sampling techniques. Technology allows many to accomplish a defined sound, so playing many instruments accounts for very little.
i love this video! I think he's saying that he's clearing up her heart, by taking away the reasons for her depression. The reasons are injury, children, the unknown, destruction, work and death. The spider is the depression slowly overcoming her, and the planet is her heart. soo creative. awesome vid. :)
I love how soft Gotye is compared to everyone else. I think of his music as a breath of fresh air. So many artists, even if they are any good (like Muse, Foo Fighters, or Weezer, all great bands), try to fill their songs with so much, and they're so loud! While that can be fun for a bit, I like to relax when listening to music, I like to feel at ease. Gotye, especially with this song, does that perfectly. His voice is so soft, so gentle, even when he screams it seems peaceful. I love it.
Honestly, I could cry to this video. I see it like this; He's taking a trip through someone's heart and those oddly shaped creatures are the result of everything that has happened to that person. Therefore, like I said before, I could cry to this video because that person must have went through hell. :'(
It's great to read comments like yours on ALL his youtube uploads he's been making music long before SIUTK, and it's all great - Pulsar has an entire playlist there are so many live uploads that pay kudos to your comment
@J0shblair Great interpretation! Thats that I was thinking too! I also thought that the on with the suit symbolized how her job was going no where, because the creature just kept rowing in circles.
I showed this vid to my 12 yr old daughter & her friend. They then became obsessed with it, made a little dance to it performed it for me, then they downloaded it on itunes & played it in their art class at school. They said the class listened in silence but ridiculed some other song called 'set fire to the rain'. See, kids know class when they hear it, they're just being spoon fed a lot of crap by the general music industry - we have to make sure they hear this stuff...
i think that they represent a different part of the song that you see them.......the man is leaving before his love is wasted.......the spider is pulling the past pian" darkness".......this is so good.....thumbs up man.
@bbrake @bbrake That's just your interpretation of the video and the song, and I have to say it's very awesome and I could definitely see where you saw those connections. Bravo good sir, bravo.
I just saw them in Cleveland on 09.16.12 - amazing! I like the music before, but I LOVE them now!!! great show, great music... so addicted. Some bands are all studio and awful in person. Not them. Highly recommend seeing them live.
this song is really mind blowing...What a master piece of art!!!!!! Music art of course.....very seldom...I'm sure Massive Attack love this music as well ;-)
main character is the dark of the yin-yang (white dot provided by headphones/earmuffs). its the subconscious speaking to the conscious mind, calling attention to all the elements of life that a busy mind leaves untended (all contained within the heart/soul). the video follows the cycle of the moon, which for centuries has been analogous to a human's life. the subconscious is "desperate to connect" with the conscious mind to become a fully integrated person. NAILED IT!!!!!
My literature teacher showed this video to us without sound at first, and the majority of us couldn't stop bursting out in laughter. When she handed out the lyrics and played the actual song, we shut up. I love this song now, not just because of the tune, but the depth of the meaning because the one the song is directed to sounds like how I used to be. Overall, DAMN GOOD SONG!
I was in a relationship like this. Took me over a year to realize I was wasting my love. It's startling just how real and relatable of an artist Gotye is.
@bbrake That's just your interpretation of the video and the song. And I have to say it's very awesome and I could definitely see where you saw those connections.
I remember my family and i used to listen to Gotye on weekends on long car trips, it's funny how such songs can trigger your subconscious minds to small moments... I love that Gotye is still making the same quality amazing creative music as he had :)
To me, it's an exploration of her mind. Spot on dude. Greatly worded. This song is way better than someone I used to know in my opinion

Scott L His voice is amazing.
Goosebumps at the end when the choir starts...
This song + animation are just unbelievable.
I think I listened to this a million times crying in 2009-2010 still tugs at me here now to remember that pain.
The more I listen, the more I realize just how true Gotye is

"Hearts A Mess"
Pick apart
The pieces of your heart
And let me peer inside
Let me in
Where only your thoughts have been
Let me occupy your mind
As you do mine
Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
You can't live like this
You have lost
(Too much love)
To fear, doubt and distrust
(It's not enough)
You just threw away the key
To your heart
You don't get burned
('Cause nothing gets through)
It makes it easier
(Easier on you)
But that much more difficult for me
To make you see…
Love ain't fair
So there you are
My love
Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you, you can't live like this
Your heart's a mess
You won't admit to it
It makes no sense
But I'm desperate to connect
And you can't live like this
Love ain't safe
You won't get hurt if you stay chaste
So you can wait
But I don't wanna waste my love
This song is so deep. It has a meaning to it. The pain that is around the world.

Gotye Music video's are amazing, They can be confusing at the same time about there message but still great and the music is beautiful.
You know listening to this now... He reminds me a lot of Peter Gabriel with voice / theme and the trippy visuals

Loss of a child maybe? Which is the deepest kind of hurt.

this guy is just amazing x

Everything about this song and video is flat out stunning. My god, I'm in love with this.
But what an amazing man and artist
Reminds a bit of sting and somewhat of Coldplay
It's 2023 still listening to this song :)
The video is very Tim Burton-esque-love it!
This is what you call music! Love it
why do i like this so much
+MSP poodles Hmm... Maybe because it's awesome.

First song I found and heard from Gotye!
Absolutely beautiful video, like my dream world, lyrics that mean something to me, and of course Gotye himself. Perfection.
gotye's best song to date
I just found this song after searching since 2008, what a relief..
Wow that's amazing dude
2015, I still listen guys
its 2014 -_-

Ismail Khalil i'm not from the future nor the past. i'm come from the pressent.
***** You're from the past, here in the present* we don't make grammar mistakes! and we don't turn angry about Grammar Nazi ;p
Occasionally, very rarely, an artist worthy of being shared with the world actually achieves that. Best of lucky Wally. Australia is proud of you.
Very Tim Burton-esque video!
I get shivers whenever he gets to the screamish tone when he says "connect". This is beautiful~
don't mind me, just gonna float off into space like its my 5o'clock ritual or something.
So tragically beautiful in audio, visual and emotional. Not only a genius, but a master at stealing all of my time.
My hair stands up when he screams "I'm desperate to connect"
i do think i found a new favorite artist...someone he knows is in a desperate situation, he wants to help in any way he can, but the person wont open up...and he doesnt want to waste his love, though how can you love one sided? it doesnt happen. Still anyone listening this masterpiece in 2016 ? 🤘🏻😬

Every chance I get. I like his older stuff and the crazy video's he makes for them.

'Heart's a Mess;' how many of us can relate....
Gotye, Thank you for sharing your beautiful music with us. You are very talented and I look forward to more. Thank you.
What is it with Gotye and long spindly legs?
this song and "somebody that i used to know" are my favourites now... this guy is so amazing ! he is doing a great job and i think there is still hope for this new music generation ! Love it!

Put the song on 1.5 speed... ;D
Not bad
I have no idea what that video was trying to say, but I can't stop watching it. This song has beautiful lyrics.
Gatsby...
Music is as always, mesmerizing. My new favorite band. The music speaks to me.
I think this guy is on drugs :D
absolutely lovely, every word and every tune
This better quality of the video makes it easier to see how amazingly well-made the animation really is, when compared to the blurry 240p version.
i love this video! I think he's saying that he's clearing up her heart, by taking away the reasons for her depression. The reasons are injury, children, the unknown, destruction, work and death. Bjork and Goyte collaborating would be an ORGASMIC experience auditorily and visually!
I love how soft Gotye is compared to everyone else. I think of his music as a breath of fresh air. Just amazing... sadness meets inspiration. Top 5 all time video/song combos.
I love all of you're songs🥺
the power behind his voice.. the emotion, its so enchanting.
Gotye is so addicting. For me, it's his attention to the lyrics. They are simple but still carry so much meaning.
not sure how i feel about the song..but the video..so nice. images are so strong

whoooow...heard him first time last winter in Perth....his voice got something that makes me have goosebumps....

It's so great on so many levels. I'm proud that this guy has belgian roots.
Goyte's music is beautiful, and the lyrics always make me think, which is important in music these days (as most popular music does not).
