this show doesn't primarily focus on "moving the story forward", as you're pointing out. it's a deep character study in first place, and a slow burn detective case in second place. now don't get me wrong, the payoff of the plot is definitely coming, but it's there mostly to talk about the main characters themselves. it's ultimately all about them. under pressure characters make decisions, and in those decisions they reveal who they are. that is peak character development. It's what you call a 'slow burn.' It also nails the feeling, at least for me, of the Gulf Coast area of the coastal, rural parts of Louisiana that aren't New Orleans. Some of East Texas, too, really. The heat makes it feel like time crawls... but things sneak up on you that way.
I just want to thank you , if you haven't started this show I wouldn't have either , yet it's one of my favorite ones now , I've been suggested to watch it , but never actually did it until now
Hey Spartan and Pudgey, by episode 2 we see so many of Marty's flaws. Marty is such a realistic character portrayal by Woody Harelson. ------ It seems like the start of the show that Rust is the dysfunctional personality when in fact it's Marty. ------ Marty's very big flaws in his personal life which cause so much more chaos to the relationship between the two characters. AS a detective he can't hold a candle to Rust's intuition, but he's integral to case management and interviewing leads. Of course, you have so much to see with their professional and personal interactions.
I'd say the story, the mystery, isn't really the point - its the effect the story has on the characters lives, relationships and perceptions of reality. This is more of a character study wrapped up in a crime thriller casing.
The case might not have advanced more than a step or two in this episode, but didn't you learn a grip of information about Rust and Marty's personal lives? Family lives? Past and history? Didn't you learn something about their relationship with each other? This is a great episode. And ending with that amazing song, "Kingdom Of Heaven" by legendary Texas psychedelic rock band The 13th Floor Elevators was just... *chef's kiss!!* This show is So Dang Good.
28:30 Pudgey's eyes!!! LOL!!! If Spartan EVER said that to Pudgey, i get the impression that this would turn into a one person reaction channel and Spartan's body would never be found!
Yeah, while the murder mystery case is technically the central narrative arc, in many ways the case almost functions as a backdrop for exploring the characters.
The actors playing Marty & Rust have been good friends in real life for many years. IMO, this season of the show may have the 2 best acting performances I've ever seen in one show. They both seem like "real" people, flaws & all.
I grew up where this show was set and they NAILED the overall vibe and characters. The writer is also from the area and we were all shook by 8 real life murders (looks up "Jeff Davis 8") that must have inspired some details of the story here. McConaughey also used to come through the area from time to time so he really knew how to make Rust authentic. Best HBO show ever
Don’t worry about the pace! Episode 3 by the end is when people get hooked, in my opinion. It’s kinda like quicksand or a black hole… you get deeper and deeper into it as it goes And this is Louisiana, America. Alien to a lot of Americans also 😂 An eminently quotable show… 😎 lines worth memorizing
17 years. They had the case their first year as partners. Then 7 years later, that ended. 10 years after the break up of their partnership is where the current picks up.
its not considered amazing just because of the story, its more because of all the other sides (characters life/thoughts etc) that are shown, using a crime as a 'backdrop' almost. [ Also, glad you're liking it :) ]
I always thought the “Im from Texas” scene was a good drop in. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are both from Texas. I always assumed that was a just a little joke between two fellow Texans. They both love their state. Im a native Texan as well. Very familiar with Texas and Louisiana. Im in East Texas not far from Louisiana. Been to a lot of the places they mention in this series. Such a masterful perfect series here. Loved y’all’s reaction and analysis.
I know you guys said you were only going to watch season one of True Detective--BUT, season 4 (the one that just recently came out with Jodi Foster) has direct connections with this season and while not as good as this season, is worth the watch.
Along with Chernobyl, simply the best TV out there. I like your empathy with both detectives despite their flaws. The series is a slow burn but gets way more intense and frightening as it progresses. I've watched it at least 5 more times over the years ànd get something new every time.
Since you heard the name, King in Yellow.. i can say it without spoiler, this is connected to HP Lovecraft's universe. If you 2 wanna know more, google Yellow King or King in Yellow. Edit: As for the slowness of the episodes.. It 100% reflect the name of the show, TRUE DETECTIVE.. this is how 90% of no witnesses murk's are pacing, days of nothing, until they find some smallest thing they can grasp on. Its actually quite realistic. Edit2: I'll add, this is why, the other seasons are such let down.. cus season 1 actually established the fact that this is happening in Lovecraft's "world". That was both genius, ballsy, most of all it shown vision. And next seasons should have done justice to it, should have respected the name that is associated with this show now, HP Lovecraft, legend of horror. Season 2 was good, even thou bit incoherent, it still shown respect with such acting performances, from some of the best A listers.. that they actually redeemed themselves with half-bad writing. But seasons 3 and 4!? I'd honestly advise you NOT to watch them. They are that embarrassing.
I partly disagree with your second addition about it being in "Lovecraft's world" because (SPOILERS) . . . . . . . . . The ending is very deliberately ambiguous on whether there is any supernatural aspect to the case and to the story. Yes, maybe there is a supernatural entity, a "King in Yellow". Maybe it's just something the cultists wrapped themselves in to make their perversion more "interesting". Maybe they genuinely believed in it but it was never real. We, the audience are led to believe there might be some supernatural aspect because of Rust's hallucinations, but that doesn't mean any of it is real. There are plenty of real-life cults that do weird, messed up stuff just like in the show, doesn't mean their gods are real. That said, in my opinion that makes season 1 even more interesting. We'll never know if there's some unfathomable god pulling the strings, or if it's just the darkness of the human mind at work, and to me that's the point, the evil men are capable of is just as endless and its whole just as incomprehensible as an Elder God. It's a shame seasons 2 and 3 didn't follow that theme, and that season 4 tried but ultimately didn't stick the landing.
@@pabloc8808 if it was JUST "King in Yellow".. sure. But you don't put King in Yellow and Carcosa in same show, without that meaning, 100%, it is HP Lovecrafts world. Where would those people learn the word Carcosa? Unless from the Hastur(King in Yellow) himself, through someone he used as a puppet to play with(like the killer.. or the entire family, etc). I am 99% sure Rust did NOT hallucinate Carcosa, when he seen it.. Ladue also used the phrase 'Dark Stars' and Carcosa.. which means he seen the same thing Rust did.
@@RegTarg011 They believing in the King in Yellow and Carcosa doesn't necessarily mean those things are real and this is Lovecraft's world; it could simply mean Lovecraft's works exist in this world and they chose to wrap themselves in that mythos, or that the leaders of the cult used that to manipulate people like Ledoux and Errol and such, since they're mentally messed up from birth or from drug use. Again, it's not a stretch to say that since that stuff happens in real life, cult leaders who don't believe a word they say but use that to manipulate their followers. What I'm saying is, it's open to interpretation because we never see something truly supernatural except through Rust's eyes, and he's pretty unreliable in that sense. When we hear it from other characters, it's drug users like Ledoux, or Errol who's mentally challenged, so they're are also unreliable.
@@pabloc8808 w/e bro... I see this as a story set in a Lovecraftin world. U don't have to see an Elder God, for it to be the same universe. The simplicity of it is exactly what makes me see this as such.. They pierce in to "our" reality through countless small holes.. this was one of them. This crazy family sacrificing kids for Yellow King. To use this much reference, and NOT to be it.. would be shameless and pathetic from the writers side. Which they undoubtably knew. Person can watch the show, without knowing anything about Lovecraft, and that was the point. But also for Lovecraft fans to recognize it.
I found the first season fantastic. Creepy as f*kk but fantastic, with several stories being told at the same time and we the audience slowly finding where they possibly connect and why things aren't always as nice as politicians want us to believe...
You'll get it more later, but the pacing of this show is absolutely PERFECT. It's intentionally a slow burn because it adds weight and heft to everything. It's HEAVY. You don't get a lot of early reveals and case busting stuff to move the case forward, because this show isn't REALLY about that. It's about Rust and Marty, but ultimately it's about life.
"If things were so great, they never would have changed." It sounds good on the surface, and to a degree there's some truth in it, but there's an idea that even if we had a utopia, we would grow bored with the repetitive and safe nature of such an environment, and we would eventually act out, causing chaotic events just to get the rush of the unpredictable. Basically, the argument is that we desire some sort of drama in life. We crave struggle to the degree that it is just challenging enough to make us better in some way, but not insurmountable. We need the freedom to be unhappy and to change, but a world "too great" would be too sanitized for our instincts to bear.
You seem to think this is about the crime and subsequently finding the bad guy. Rather it is more like a heroes journey story except Rust and Cohle aren't heroes and it has already been established that the bad guy is still out there, so we have these flashbacks for.. nothing. It is about the characters of course.. Free your mind
Rust: I looked into the abyss and it looked back at me Marty: I'm not looking at that, I'm going to distract myself with affairs and trying to control my daughter.
You’re doing a great job with a classic show. In a way, it’s a shame that the first season is so good that everything that followed suffered from comparison. But at least each one stands alone.
Rust is just phenomenal. He's such a flawed character, but he doesn't shy away from those deficiencies. I see you ladies are loving the intense direct authenticity that Rust Cohle brings to the story we are telling. ------- Rust uses that self-examination to get in the mind of the perpetrator. ------ He really gets into the psyche of his characters. Which would send us mere mortals ape shit. ------ Every time I see clips from the first season of TD it makes me respect Matthew McConaughey's acting.
Most Americans don't know the places they are talking about. It's mostly south Louisiana around New Orleans. It's a very poor and rural area most Americans don't go to and don't know much about. So don't let that throw you. I would say they are doing a good job of portraying the area as it is, poor and religious and heavily influenced by the rich from New Orleans and Baton Rouge that don't live there and the catholic church.
S1 is One of The best TV shows ever! So gritty! If you watched Mind Hunter TV series based on true story of real FBI guys who "invented" behaviour profiling in the 1950/1960's.....has similar feel to this! Scary as hell. Every True Detective series is great, but this first original is the the best n most darkly grittiest.😮
One more thing I'd point out since I've seen a lot of reactors think it: Marty is not talking about family in his interview while cheating on his wife at the same time. The interview is in 2012 while the cheating being shown was in 1995. Perhaps he's learned his lesson or perhaps not. Stay tuned.
I just love the characters and performances so much... wish I could see it for the first time again haha, and I'm absolutely loving these reactions as well
I was wondering how some of the American culture/slang stuff would effect y’all (Louisiana culture confuses most Americans too don’t worry 😂) but honestly it seems to me like you’re doing a pretty good job! It’s almost like watching Thrones, where the longer you sit with the language and the culture the more comfortable you get even without the context of having read the books. Or in the case of True Detective, having grown up in the southern US.
This show is basically an excuse to put philosophical debates into the main characters' mouths. The plot is secondary to the characters and the concepts.
Rust for all his anti religious sentiment is as if not more dedicated to his worldview than any priest. He's divorced from reality and walking a narrow path, the kind of life that the truly devoted are instructed in. It's easy to see him as broken but the reality is far more nuanced.
With these kind of truly artistic shows you just have to experience it, don't try to find motivations or specific meanings. We get so few of these nowadays
You gals just stumbled into one of the best TV dramas in history. THis show has more twist and turns than a Rocky Mountain roadway and will make Grey's Anatomy look like a kindergarten coloring book. ------- I still get the shakes when I watch Marty and Rust unravel the deepest most intense mystery anyone could fictionalize. ------7 weeks for you guys to get to the end. -------- Not sure if I can take it, your trust in humanity will be shaken to the bone. ------ Please keep your comfort blanket handy, you'll need it for sure.

*chef's kiss!!*
This show is So Dang Good.
The Owl looking down on them as they entered the burned out church was ominous.
this show is one of my favorites and i’m glad you guys went with it. great content, keep it up.
These two were having fun with their characters when making this series. 😉♥
Oh, it'll start popping off especially THAT one take in episode 3.
28:30 Pudgey's eyes!!! LOL!!! If Spartan EVER said that to Pudgey, i get the impression that this would turn into a one person reaction channel and Spartan's body would never be found!
You guys got the timeline wrong
The Dora Lange case - 1995
Asking Cohle & Marty -2012 (after 17 years not 10)
That zipper doing its best Tobey McGuire in spider man impression
TRUE DETECTIVE??!?!?!? HELL YESSSS!!
Yeah, while the murder mystery case is technically the central narrative arc, in many ways the case almost functions as a backdrop for exploring the characters.
This is definitely as show that will reward you for going along with the slow burn.
Thank yall for your reactions🙂
It’s kinda like quicksand or a black hole… you get deeper and deeper into it as it goes
And this is Louisiana, America. Alien to a lot of Americans also 😂
An eminently quotable show… 😎 lines worth memorizing
17 years. They had the case their first year as partners. Then 7 years later, that ended. 10 years after the break up of their partnership is where the current picks up.
This was elite TV and probably the best one off series in recent times
its not considered amazing just because of the story, its more because of all the other sides (characters life/thoughts etc) that are shown, using a crime as a 'backdrop' almost.
5:30 that woman they were interviewing is the same actress that played Jesse Pinkman's mom in Breaking Bad
They are perfection.
Definitely helped her further her career for a while.
The best single TV show ever, hands down, end of
Since you heard the name, King in Yellow.. i can say it without spoiler, this is connected to HP Lovecraft's universe.
I partly disagree with your second addition about it being in "Lovecraft's world" because (SPOILERS)

I think y'all would really love The Leftovers. It's top 3 HBO shows of all time for me.
"If things were so great, they never would have changed."
It sounds good on the surface, and to a degree there's some truth in it, but there's an idea that even if we had a utopia, we would grow bored with the repetitive and safe nature of such an environment, and we would eventually act out, causing chaotic events just to get the rush of the unpredictable.
Rust: I looked into the abyss and it looked back at me
Marty: I'm not looking at that, I'm going to distract myself with affairs and trying to control my daughter.
"Sheeeeeeeiiit" 😂
What I would do to be able to watch this for the first time again
I NEED YOU TO DO OUTLANDER !!!! ASAP !!!
You guys should watch vikings.
"Mainlining the secret truth of the universe."
Love watching you both watching this.
Thanks! Peaky Blinders and True Detective at the same time??? Thankful 🙏🏾
@jameezy916 wow thanks for the support Jameezy! we are glad you can enjoy these two epic shows along with us!
You need the setup before the fireworks go off...
"I am police. I could do terrible things to people, with impunity."
A couple scenes later, bounces a toolbox off a guy's head.
You'll watch this show again, and again...
Bcoz time is a flat circle....
And also bcoz of Alexandra Daddario.
This episode (and the whole series) was supported by Jameson! 🥃 Drink responsibly (Don't spill it ya goat!)
"my brain hurts" tell us something we don't know.
Spartan & Pudgey Such A Awesome Video Today!!🔥🐐🐐💎
Oh this is a good series.
This show is basically an excuse to put philosophical debates into the main characters' mouths. The plot is secondary to the characters and the concepts.
I know you love avatar and dragon prince is another masterpiece made by the same people
Rust for all his anti religious sentiment is as if not more dedicated to his worldview than any priest. He's divorced from reality and walking a narrow path, the kind of life that the truly devoted are instructed in. It's easy to see him as broken but the reality is far more nuanced.
best season. i suggest you watch season 4 next then 3 and 2 all different stories some things connected tho
Don't worry, it rolls slow and then explodes.....
Keep it up you two! 🙏🇬🇧
React to The Umbrella Academy guys! I really think u would like it!
Alex Daddario was a goddess before the breast surgery and Woody Harrelson one of the rarest lucky guy who enjoyed her in planet.
Mr. Inbetween. amazing show
I work 4 nights a week and drink any day I can afford.
should check out some real life true crime stuff after this
With these kind of truly artistic shows you just have to experience it, don't try to find motivations or specific meanings. We get so few of these nowadays
This show is definitely a slow burn but almost everything is relevant. Since it’s only one season I think they did it perfect.
