There Will Be Blood - How PT Anderson Directs Dominance and Disgrace

There Will Be Blood (2007) is not only one of Paul Thomas Anderson’s best movies, but it might also rank as one of the best all time. Daniel Day-Lewis is stellar as the vicious oil baron Daniel Plainview and Paul Dano as his would-be nemesis Eli Sunday create sparks every time they share the screen.
Paul Thomas Anderson began his career with high energy and bombastic films like Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Punch-Drunk Love. There Will Be Blood marks a dramatic shift in tone and energy for PT Anderson - ultimately leading to more reserved but nonetheless powerful films like The Master, Inherent Vice, and Phantom Thread.
In this There Will Be Blood analysis, Paul Thomas Anderson brings these two feuding characters to a breaking point. Paul Thomas Anderson films this scene in such a way that we identify with Eli - both during his nervous approach to Daniel and his ultimate denigration in the mud and oil. But how does he do this?
PT Anderson makes simple and direct film blocking and staging choices to capture two things simultaneously - Daniel’s dominance and Eli’s disgrace. To do this, Paul Thomas Anderson uses the camera to occupy Eli or Eli’s point of view at all times. Even when Daniel begins to beat Eli into the ground, we (the camera) drops to that occupy that perspective. In There Will Be Blood, cinematography plays a key role in capturing this violent dynamic.

What's another scene that you love from PTA's There Will Be Blood? Reply to this comment and let us know! 👇
Daniel's baptism scene! It's the retort to this scene, in Eli's grand stage.
The scene of the explosion and the accident of the little boy is a masterpiece
The final scene or the opening scene. The surveying scene is great too.
The restaurant scene
Daniel killing the guy faking his brother and only crying scene on seeing the photograph in his brother's diary
Film School: "Where are all our new students?"
StudioBinder: "I drink your MILKSHAKE! I drink it up."

DRAAAAAINAAGE!
I gotta admit, I love the dynamic between Paul and Daniel. Their antagonism was very captivating throughout the entire runtime.
*Eli*?
One of the greatest films of all time. Amazing that it came out the same year No Country for Old Men came out too
Not only that, they were filming at the same time, too. The oil fire that happens actually halted production for a day on No Country since they were near by.
Ice Ice Booey yea I heard about that too. Crazy. My two favorite films of all time.
Good stuff sir. PTA is a master and totally under-awarded filmmaker
Totally sir, his movies are such works of art
He's one of our favorites as well.

This is better than film school
Every time I re-watch There Will Be Blood I find it more and more comedic. The power dynamic between Daniel and Eli is brilliant. Eli’s attempt to literally and figuratively stand taller than Plainview brings comedic value to this dark story. The constant slap to the face Daniel grants Eli, humiliating him gets funnier with each watch.

I just wanna thanks this page that made my dream come true on studying filmmaking, here in Brazil films school are so expensive, and i bet i have learn more than so many students on this page
I’d love a video on John Cassavetes as he is the godfather of all indie cinema & it would be great to see where it all started and what concepts of storytelling are foundational to that kind of cinema. Particularly A Woman Under the Influence would be a dream come true.
I really like your VO artist’s voice. Who is he?

Ah yes, the power of film. Both words and composition working together to build a story before us, while painting the world that grew out of the story. Love StudioBinder long time.

I think taxi driver is better, but there will be blood is amazing as well.
Devendra Ghagare the master is a tad better. Other great character studies are Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy and Citizen Kane
One thing PTA does beautifully is sound. Those are some thundering slaps
for a while I thought that P.T.A. employed long takes in there will be blood to enhance the old timey feel.
nope. he just doesnt like cutting alot.
There Will Be Blood was filmed in Marfa, Texas. The Church of the Third Revelation was built specifically for the movie and it's still standing today. Does anyone know where though? I've looked for it on Google Earth and maps but I can't find it. Anyone have the coordinates or address? Thank you!
Man I love Paul Dano!
I just had a conversation about blocking yesterday. I'm currently working on a project were proper blocking would be key. Also there will be blood is an amazing film. Daniel Day Louis played the hell out of that scene.
mm those shots at 3:54, with the light casted on eli's face as opposed to the shadows on daniel's that makes him so much more threatening, and the backgrounds along with the contrasting colors . eli being in front of the blue skies gives his cut a cooler, blue, submissive feel to it, whereas in daniel's scene, his position makes it so that the skies are much bleaker and his scene feels warm, red, uninviting and dominating. i love this film too much.
I find the last scene when Daniel smashes Eli's head with a bowling ball funny as hell
I thought that was horrible but well deserve because the greedy oilman won over the false preacher who just wanted money he should had told Daniel about God himself.
*pin
I thought I was the only one. People are always like that scene is so ‘intense’. But it was also kind of hilarious and made me want a milkshake.
Try Schindler's list's
Chicken scene.
Liquidation scene
Coinsiding marriage, beating, play scene
The more this guy talks the more i want to be a filmmaker 💚
Such a genius
love PTA, he's the master (pun intended) but that last cut seems necessary. I think if we stayed with Eli in that shot and saw DDL walk away in the same shot would've had a much more humiliating effect. That cut kind of takes you out of the moment. At least to me that's what it feels like.
the last cut restores objectivity. PTA doesn't want us to empathize too much with Eli so the viewer is given some distance in order not to feel too sorry for him.
@@henn863 idk man he basically cut to Eli just laying there in the mud breathing heavy so I don't think we would've sympathized with him any more than we did with the cut. That cut just seems kind of abrupt and gave some breathing space which just seems a little odd to me
*empathized
The scene near the beginning in the essay office after Plainview crawls out of the mine and the camera slowly pans over from the desk in the office to Plainview as he lays down with his rifle next to him.
If you pay attention, he subtly moves his hand closer to the rifle as if to visually symbolize how distrusting he is of other people, especially when it comes to the accumulation of his wealth.
THAT is a very subtle but powerful example of the brilliant blocking in this extraordinary film.
Moving his hand is not a blocking choice. That's an acting choice.
@@johndowney8774 It's blocking if the director tells the actor to do so. A characters predetermined movement is an aspect of blocking.
Thank you so much for studiobinder this time good job from you channel.
Thanks for making this video.
Great video! Rather sneaky spoiler though at the end which is rather disastrous for those that have not seen the film

Why everyone is reviewing There will be blood? I think Magnolia and Boogie Nights are so much better films from PT Anderson
those are definitely his most “showy” films, but TWBB is his film with the most artistic value
Because there will be blood is better. Magnolia is just overlong, for no fucking reason.
4:51 woooorrrrlllddd staaarrrr!!!
