Denis Villeneuve movies are made to confuse you. At every opportunity - in the story, in the cinematography, editing, and music, Villeneuve wants to keep you guessing. Watching Denis Villeneuve movies is to be placed in an environment of uncertainty. And that’s what makes them so interesting.
In films like Enemy, Prisoners, Polytechnique, Blade Runner 2049, and Arrival, Villeneuve consistently creates awe and wonder with images and sounds we’ve never seen before. In Enemy, Adam (Jake Gyllenhaal) must confront the possibility that he is more than a single person. In Sicario, Kate (Emily Blunt) is pushed into the world of drug cartels by a tight-lipped company man (Josh Brolin) and a near-silent assassin (Benicio Del Toro). In Prisoners, Keller (Hugh Jackman) ventures into murky moral territory to find his kidnapped daughter. In Arrival, Louise (Amy Adams) and Ian (Jeremy Renner) are tasked with bridging the communication gap between beings from another dimension. In all these movies, the characters find themselves in new worlds without answers.
In this video, we’ve cracked the code on Villeneuve’s love of ambiguity and we explain how his directing style works across 7 areas of focus including sound, color, production design, and more. Villeneuve creates movies that can be enigmatic but there’s no denying that he is a film artist in complete control of his medium.
If you’re studying directing, cinematography, editing, or pursuing ANY career in filmmaking, there are a ton of lessons to be learned from Denis Villeneuve. This is the ultimate breakdown of Denis Villeneuve’s directing style.

Main difference from Nolan and Villeneuve is that Nolan is affraid of uncertainty, and uses exposition to explain everything, out of fear of losing his audience. Villeneuve dooesnt need to rely on that. Everything we need to know is in the frame. Thats why his cnema in the perfect combination between art and mainstream product.

It's not that Nolan is "afraid of uncertainty"; he just loves precision. Villeneuve is a minimalist. Nolan creates dense worlds. Both are highly effective, but have very different approaches to film making. If I am to give my own opinion on the 2, I'd say Nolan is more creative while Villeneuve is more polished. Both are in my top 3 directors working today.

@@carlospadinmartinez 😂😂😂 every movie is art, even movies from uwe boll, michael bay, or roland emmerich, so this is no argument, but I think Villeneuve and Nolan are very similar and the fact that both Nolan and Villeneuve will be soon bringing a film to the cinema (Dune and Tenet), which both has a fantastic cast, huge budget and great potential, only underlines this thesis. In my opinion, Nolan's writing and the way he makes films is a little better, but that doesn't mean that I don't really like Villeneuve. Let's just hope that both films will be good, because in the end it doesn't matter which director you find better, because it shouldn't be about this, but only about the quality of their films, whether the music is great, whether the pictures are beautiful whether the film is written intelligently and multifaceted, whether the actors are good and whether the film gives the viewer a good time, because that is what the medium film ultimately is for.

In your sound design section, you might have also mentioned the airplane scene in 'Sicario'. Near the beginning of the movie, Emily Blunts character is on a small private jet. In the scene Villeneuve takes the loud sound of the jet's engines & turns it into a crowd screaming people, followed by a jump scare. This scene is one of my favourites. It's amazing & tense. It perfectly explains her feelings about her current situation & apprehension, all without saying a single word. She only speaks once the scare has occurred, yet the tensions are still present & raw.

Villeneuve is the master of telling big stories through small, personal perspectives. Arrival, for example, tells two stories about human connection. One about humanity connecting with aliens that have landed on Earth and another one about Amy Adams and her relationship with her husband and daughter. He then connects these stories to each other and makes me cry.

@Robert Jameson wow I strongly disagree, the movie is considered one of the best sequels ever made for a reason. It's a pure cinema masterpiece in my opinion.

Marco Piazza I just feel like it’s missing half of the soul of the first film because it lacks the Vangelis score which is in my opinion why the first is pushed to another level. And the sequel story is cool but definitely not needed after the end of the first. I find it to be an awesome companion piece to the first.

    • @marcopiazzaiv5749

@@robertjameson4101 I see your point, however I think 2049 has a very interesting story to tell, and it tells it brilliantly. I think it also adds to the original as well. As for the score I think both are equally beautiful, Hans Zimmer's work was soo outstanding tbh the score is one of my fav things ab 2049. Idk I love both but I guess I just love Denis Villeneuve's movies. Def top 3 directors rn

Regarding Villeneuve's use of color, I also have a mostly monochromatic approach with my wardrobe so (a) the contrast in texture and color of my accessor(ies) pop, (b) the overall aesthetic is cleaner and sleeker (which can add contrast in form if the lines and curves are at risk of being too varied), and (c) to add visual interest by subduing the borders of things and thereby piquing curiosity. I wonder if some of that are at least also part of the reason for his use of color.
