@@thedude-jb7wx Good thing that is only your opinion and not fact. I'm not a boomer nor a zoomer, but I do not understand how older folks think the younger folks do not appreciate or even listen to classical or older music but when they in fact do, they are told to stop by the older folks. "Young folks got to write classic songs"? Like the Stones and Zeppelin? Who heavily borrowed and sometimes stole older material from uncredited artists? The guys and gals are creating their own work, inspired by those who came before them. Hendrix may have paved the way, but we have to continue paving or the road stops.
@@thedude-jb7wx Look, I really want to discuss this but I am honestly having a hard time understanding what you are trying to say. Your grammar and sentence structure are quite poor. Rephrase. Are you implying that these non-house hold name kids are not better than the Beatles? That they have technique but no soul? I do not know what you are implying.
Skydog it’s called a fret wrap. It’s just a cloth device that wraps around the neck and acts as a constant mute for your strings. When guys go crazy fast with the legato sometimes other strings will ring out and that’s to help control that from happening as much and keep those other strings quiet.
hey guys, how do I get started playing this style & improvise like this? I'm at like 5% music theory, would love to be at least beginner-intermediate level by the end of this year - tips on things to study?
Theres a book called jazz theory by mark levine, some of the info will be hard to understand but you can still get a lot of useful stuff from it. Also its good to have as you progress and get better.
There is a book on neo soul guitar on amazon. And lots of lessons on UA-cam. Those will get you started. Also start learning the notes on the neck if you don't already. Start learning jazz chords and arpeggios.
Check out Kerry 2 Smooth for lessons. As someone mentioned it's ironic that s neo soul compilation video features how many African American guitarists. Someone's gonna come along and say it's not about colour. People let's keep it real. None of these guitarists are featured on any classic neo soul records. Jairus is making his mark. D'Angelo is the king try Voodoo and Brown Sugar. The miseducation of Lauryn Hill Erykah Badu Bilal Music Soulchild aijuswanasing Jill Scott Floetry There are elements in J Dillas music especially stuff with Dwele.
The guitarrist is Magnus Klausen, the chess player is Magnus Carlsen. Is pretty similar, but they are not the same person. Both are experts, each in their own area.
Not long depends how good u are start easy and build. There just chordal embellishments. Once u start learning you'll see what going on. Looks alot harder then it is technically. Timing and feel is the biggies really. Can u play little wing by jimi Hendrix?? If so good. It's just little wing on steroids but more rnb neo soul chord progressions. Like the guy 2 Smooth at about 3/4 threw isnt to hard if u look at it . It's the feel and touch and funkiness.
Antonio Towner Well, I’m a toilet, so I can’t play. I’m just asking for the sake of quenching my curiosity. But I did find out from a guy that does similar stuff that it’s really just pentatonic scales and improvisation, right?

Why couldn't I have seen a video like this when I was a pre teen ?
It would only break ur confidence which it has for me.... sigh.
@@mohamedsinaan Don't look at it that way
3:25 Some bass finally
Great video, but where is ISAIAH SHARKEY and ERICK WALLS?!?!
Where is mateus asato?
Was wondering the same but Mateus doesn't sound too neo soul/R&B to me more like blues
Right??
Matheus doesn't fully on this genre
He's on another genre.
Not Neo Soul/R&B.
Tom Misch is a cold beast on that guitar, one of my favorites!
Ruben Wan should have appeared more than once on this clip. This guy is a monster on IG...
10:23 was wonderful too. I need this as a ringtone.

I am so fucking glad, happy, and just relieved that I clicked on this video. Thank you! 💯💜
Love them all, but I think Beau is all over the place and breaks the feel sometimes.
Too technical for me man
DJ B
Yeah he’s more jazz than RnB soul type..
Jazz is all over the place
@@_Bat-Man_ Very true he's all over the place but in a good and technical way, some aren't into it though

Neo soul incorporates jazz and other genres...gospel, blues, funk r'n'b.
Is Magnus Klausen getting that vibrato by pressing on the bridge directly with the palm of his hand? It doesn't look like he's holding a whammy bar
Yes
0:14 now thats cool. I wanna steal it but its not gonna sound the same anyways😆
So how does one start moving towards this direction? What things should I start practicing or learning
