Boy am I Glad I found this video. I just picked up a 1987 ranger, and have the exact same problem. I picked up new valve cover gaskets last week but wasn’t sure that was the issue. Until today it started smoking from the same side, as well as I could see the oil leaking out from the exact same spot. There’s a TON of oil everywhere. I’m guessing the gaskets have never been done. Will be changing them once I finish my night shift this evening. Wooo! Nice videos man. Subscribed!!
That seems to be the issue I’m having with mine too, I just purchased it 2 days ago. The previous owner told me it’s the valve cover gasket and also needs to have 2 front calipers replaced.
I've just changed the rocker cover gaskets on my '87 2.9 Granada Scorpio (Merkur Scorpio in US) and it still smokes from oil but I'm half expecting that to be residual oil from when it was leaking. I need to clean off the oil from the engine as you did.

Before my father passed away he told me it's a common thing with the 87-88 Ranger and Bronco 2 with the 2.9 engines

My ‘89 is leaking from behind the crankshaft and I can’t spot exactly where. It’s driving me insane.
