When I was in primary grades my reading specialist in the district came to my class and recommended only having around 4-6 books in each library bin so learners are able to browse and not be overwhelmed. I would keep extra books in boxes and rotate them out mid year.
That’s such a good idea! I can remember trying to go through library bins as a kid and being too overwhelmed (and, not wanting to read!) because there was SO MUCH!!!
I definitely see the benefit of having less books. I was however the kind of kid ( from age 5 and on) who got frustrated by the lack of selection and not wanna read cause there wasn't anything I wanted to read. To be fair I was the kid who would regularly read and check out the max number of books every week from the public library. Not the norm but just an additional view on the library situation

I think that's a great idea. I swap books out every half teen (UK teacher here), or about every 6 weeks. I don't swap chapter book series, though;
I'd have a mutiny on my hands. I also keep books linked to topics, specific lessons or seasonal celebrations in storage until they are needed. I then display those in special bins and/or on top of bookshelves. That way, the library always has books related to what we are studying, and I early finishers can pick books related to lessons or make fact files. If children get bored with the selection, I swap books with team teachers for 6 weeks. . .
I literally thought the walls were painted blue striped. Blew my mind that it was fabric!!!

Maybe for picture books, keep the seasonal books out for them too access and maybe the main ones you know might be popular. And then you could always have new books rotating out with the seasons changing
This is such a good video for me right now! I just accepted my first teaching job as a second grade teacher in Lansing, Michigan, and I'm feeling so overwhelmed about setting up my classroom and starting the year.
This might just be me… but you have such a large classroom!

Organizing by category is easy for the kids - for example: ocean animals, extreme weather, etc 😊placing pictures of each category on the front of the bin is also a plus so kids aren’t overwhelmed by the library
One idea I saw for the sound wall is to not put the sounds up until you’ve taught them! Then it’s more interactive and collaborative

In my classroom library I use guided reading levels for some then do some by series such as Little Critter etc. Since you don't like doing levels maybe by topic like Fall, Goosebumps, animals. Etc.

I love love love the fridge! I follow quite a few teachers and a couple have it! Super cute! And also students who dont have the greatest homes can be a part of the "my fridge" club!
Love your video! Thanks for posting. One of my teacher friends has clipboards like you do. She has “class list”, “field trips” etc. typed on the top sheet instead of on the board as a heading. This is great for clipboards like “reteach” since you won’t see the first page and you can switch out your clipboards with ease.
Oh! I like that “refrigerator” idea.

I like the Mrs Huls sign and the idea of maybe using the space for pictures of your favourite things - you could also add your favourite words.
I use the really good stuff book bins for my picture books. They seem to work best for students to pick up and put back. I also do not display all books at once especially in the beginning. I rotate seasonal and topics to keep it new and not overwhelming. Hope that helps!

For your noun poster you might want to add animals.
It’s easier to teach kids that animals are a separate category so they don’t have to think of an animal as a thing.

I was waiting for this series to begin! For the wrinkles, why not leave the magnetic racks on them so that they self-iron? For the books, I think I wouldn't use bins. I'd display them like in the shelves in the libraries and organize them by color 🌈. But I understand bins work better for other people.

So happy that you are teaching 2nd grade. It is my absolute favorite grade. I would just like to say about the parts of speech posters, 2nd graders learn about nouns (pronouns, and collective), verbs, adverbs, adjectives. Some of the posters you have they will bot learn. Also pictures are good for those who are not strong readers and they can relate to the pictures. Just a thought.

Downy makes a wrinkle release spray that will take the wrinkles out of the fabric and you don’t even need to take it down!

We start back August 2nd and they kids start on August 9th. We can’t get in the building until then. Happy Sunday Evening
Same here; but, we're allowed to go in now fortunately.
I think it’s so crazy that you are allowed to come and go as you please. Teachers are not allowed on campus until about 2 weeks before schools starts back and only Mon-Thurs (campus is closed on Fridays during the summer) and only from like 6am - 5pm. The campus gets locked up and we cannot even get into the parking lot.
You still have it better than most. I literally have 7/30 & 8/5 to set up and the hours are 9-4 only 🙃
I also work at a school where we have access as we wish. We are just not able to come in for like a week or 2 while floors are being done, but otherwise I go out anytime I want to go out. I didn't realize what a blessing that was until I heard about other schools more restrictive schedules.
Same. We can hang out until about 6:30pm because the custodians clock out at 7pm. But, yeah. The gates to the parking lot are closed and locked, and that’s it. This past year we couldn’t get in until 6:45am, and the kids were sent to our rooms at 7:15. Not a lot of quiet time before things got going.
That’s ridiculous! I am able to go and come. However I’m patiently waiting for floors to be cleaned before I can move things around.

The board by your desk should be your memo board and maybe think about putting a fabric skirt around your desk to hide your cords just a suggestion
I am suprised you can get into your room this early, We are not allowed into the school until late august.
What kind of fabric do you use for your bulletin boards?
I know it’s late in the school year but what if you put extra pencils if you can at the back of the classroom so it doesn’t cause distraction
When my fabric is wrinkled, I staple down one side then pull tight and staple the other side. I hope that made sense. lol

You should organise the library by color as it allows children to put things back in the right color rather than trying to find out which category the book goes in

What if you took the books out of the bins and organize them by color of the spine
I think that would look really nice, but it would make it really difficult for the kids to find books they’re interested in especially since almost all of the books are paperbacks so you wouldn’t be able to read the spines!

We start September 1st.
What time do you end school? Because you start really late! Wish we did!
Totally just depends on the district and what’s typical for the area! We used to always go back after Labor Day because I live in a town with a lot of summer tourism. Now we can go back the week before. We have our 180 days or whatever it is that I believe all states require. Typically we get out the second week of June.
