I've been seeing a lot of toy collectors becoming card collectors instead. Or maybe the better way to say it is they are "transitioning" into card collecting (assuming you categorize cards as "toys"). I think cards, (whether sports cards, trading cards, etc.) are just easier to collect, easier to store, take up less space, easier to transport, easier to display, and have more abundant markets and hobby communities to buy, sell, and trade. Also, the barrier to entry is a lot easier than it is compared to other types of toy collecting. In many cases, it's also a lot more affordable to collect cards than to collect other toys. Toy collecting isn't dead, depends on how u look at it, yes it's ah expensive hobby but if it's dead, all collectors would not buy it anymore. Its to each it's own ..
Im just speaking for myself. As a toy collector, once the itch has gone meaning after i have bought what i wanted, its just off to the next one. There's a chemical term to it that i forgot what it's called. Anyways, then there would be space issues and etc. After some time, it gets to the point that it gets tiring, boring. i collected lots as i have different interests. Action figures, diecast models, cards, Lego, etc. Companies will just keep on producing them, because they don't care about our wellness. They only care about profit.
You're 40, you're very young. It's the beginning of your life journey for man. I have friends who are in their late 50s, still look young and doing hard work. These days, 70s is considered our retirement age. You still have 30 years to go, make it beautiful 🎉🎉🎉❤❤
Believe me I am going to continue this path I feel is far better than what I was back in the day. And also with this kind of comments, I do appreciate you hanging with us over here as always. Happy holidays and happy new year!
Its not the Toy Collecting Community that is dying, its the toy reselling community thats starting to die. This is almost the same case that happened to Shoe Market, manufacturers starting to re produce sought after shoe to get more people into the "Actual" Collecting Scene not the reseller market. We can use MAFEX as an example for toy collecting, i believe they have reproduced almost every figure that risen up its value due to low stock and high demand for the recent years that passed. People we're very happy about it because almost everyone got their sought after figures without paying reseller price. Like what most people said in this comment section, You dont really collect figure because of its monetary value; Its because of the fun, experience, and memories you get whenever you buy these figures you really like. I find it funny that it was generalized that the video was titled "Toy Collecting is dead" but the general context of the video is about the resellers market. But yes, on a reseller stand point i do get your opinion and agree on it. Its been 2 years since toy reselling market started to die down and theres a few reason for it. 1 - Economy hasn't been that good and people would prefer to save up their money 2 - Toy Companies like MAFEX and Hasbro has been reproducing sought after pieces which brings down figures that originally has a high market value. 3 - Before things started to get reproduced, some people are getting out of the scene due to frustration not getting their wanted figures because of its market value. At the end of the day, its actual collector that benefits from the downfall of reseller because people are able to get things that they want without paying the high prices.
oh and mafex imho are overpriced too. Will never understand a sgd80-sgd120 for them but heh go do you. Seen them already selling at cash converters lol for context lol. Don’t need to explain further.😂
i been dabbling with digital collectible space since 2019 and its growing (i know i know many will say NFTs are skem). mainly i guess its easier for them to flex as a holder (social status) and people use it as their online identity. also also the speculation/gambling part that comes with it.
Hmm…. I am still old school. But then again; I play pokemon go too. And also play pokemon on my nintendo switch; those shiny I catch I still hold dear in my heart. So yes I do agree to digital assets somewhat. No wrong or right here mate.
So true ... also for other collectables in the past like stamps, first day covers, phonecards (remember those?), etc. Holding them to the very end means that your kids will still have to 'clear stock' at the 'cashconverters'.
I'm an adult cert collector. IT certs. CISSP, Security plus, AWS ANS-C01, AWS SCS-02 and AWS SAA. Planning to take 10 more certs related AWS before I jump to CCSP, OSCP. I did firesale my transformers last year.
that is awesome mate! no idea what are those.... i should go google... but man thats really progress over here! and good for you to firesale transformers. transfomers fell so hard its not even funny.
Also , toy collecting scene ? In Singapore ? You do realise there are those who chase blind box little pops, but then there are Sofubi collectors ? Vintage guys ? 90’s toy line ? Max factory and anime ? Kaiju ? Not to mention all the statues and stuff like yours. There are so many scenes I think you’re unaware of. There isn’t just a toy scene as you think
You clearly also dunno what you are talking about if you actually see prices of late. And hopefully you aren’t one of those who was at the Safra Mount Faber event selling for 3 days… that is rough.
Agreed part of your view but is still depend on individual and is a choice to collect the toys. One thing for sure is the price tag in SG are getting more expensive over the years. When I start play/earn kuji, it help me generate some $ but when the tix become 10 > (increase from 8), I give up totally. Now many ppls stuck with the figs and can’t sell due to >supply more than demand. I also start selling before Covi time and thankfully now left those I will keep till I pass on
The feeling is that you have that figure while others dun have it makes it feel good lol Ever since the stupid virus from late 2019 alot of people also financially crippled.Recently saw those POPMart wannabe keychain with crazy prices of 40 dollars lol who wanna hang something this expensive that can get stolen.I still like collecting but you are not wrong some of my stuffs need to sell esp the stupid Star Wars toys, Star wars are so dead right now even Toy R Us stopped stocking them I wondered where all their unsold stocks goes. Sadly also poor quality nowadays like my SHF black sun with a broken antennae right inside the box.Last time SHF got die cast man which why I never sell my old SHF those are really tank.Regret not getting some of the Play arts kai back in days where it was still a 2 figure amount now every single of them is like 200 over. Also Toy collectors are mostly now 30 over years old people who lucky to see the best of 90s.Any Gen below are all into those digital stuffs and not into physical toys.
hard truths needs to be said. yes i got it figured out and i do hope many can get out of it as soon as they can. hence this video, good or bad needs to be said. And it seems to be you also figured it out too! High five 🖐️
@kennyyeap4125 kenny did you spam 3 of the same comments? Btw I know of sellers in carousell selling vinyl cd and cassettes, this is just coffee money you can't make a living out of it.
Not familar with market. But i think can only try to hunt and resell very high value ones with limited supply. Local market, think not many people interested with keeping low-mid value toys. Hdb too small to put so many toys, wife sure kpkb. Those who are still passionate, probably already uncles/aunties who actually read the comics or played the games. Now got to be at least those >5k bearbricks, people buy because they think the price will go up and also to flaunt their wealth.
A well intentioned video but I can also understand why it rubbed some collectors the wrong way haha. To me the crux of the matter is this - Do not treat your collection as INVENTORIES. Ideally all of our toy purchases should be viewed as sunk cost, in exchange for the joy of owning them. Sure, there will bound to be items we do not love anymore later on but that do not change the fact that at the point of purchase, we did it due to nostalgia or passion, rather than the notion that we can recoup or make a profit out of it later on. It is natural that most or all collectors will become semi- speculators during our course of collecting but once that phase is over, where we sold everything that we do not have attachments to, then the ideal phase of collection will be attained, where we only buy what we really desire and will not care if it appreciates/depreciates or become worthless, because the worth of the item is measured by ourselves and unquantifiable. For context, I too am a collector for decades and 90% of my collections are still MISB, not because I am worried that their value will plummet if I unbox them, but mainly due to space constraints and easier to stack in box form. Of course, an unbox item is easier to sell at a good price too but that is not the rationale at all and this distinction is crucial to remain as a collector without feeling imbalance at market fluctuations of this hobby. Some may say I am a silly collector to spend so much and not even unbox/display them at all but end of the day, it's my money I am spending so I don't need others validation on what is considered "true" collector. This video of yours will be good wake up call for speculative collectors nonetheless, the hype hoppers or scalpers wannabes, but imho, they should know what they signed up for! ;)
Actually it’s a chicken and egg thing. I am approached by so many collectors trying to see if they can sell their collection under consignment over the years, and many of them are shocked by what I said hence your intention is well and truely good I might add. And I believe you are also not those who are swayed by prices but many don’t see it your way sadly. We are in the minority when it comes to collecting and selling down a collection that’s how I put it. Ps: let’s just say to see the same product you sold during Covid days at $900 plus and now can’t even sell at $100, let’s just say the shock to most will be catastrophic to many, I myself am shocked but not surprised, hence this video. Because I feel, it will never recover sadly.
@@ASingaporeChipmunkTotally agree that the "worth" of toys had seen better days and I too don't see it reverting back to the heights of the past. Reality is covid years bull market for toys is misleading and the crazy cost of living spike past years means people are cutting back on this hobby while many are dumping their toys on secondary market to make ends meet. But there's always 2 sides to coin as this also mean more opportunities for collectors to finally own that rare unicorn piece that they missed out, now at more reasonable asking price, so really depends on which angle one approach the current market. Your video is undoubtedly a timely reminder for resellers or newbie collectors, to be mindful of the downward trend of the toy market worth wise, so they can either start to sell off before it gets worse, or for newbies, not to expect a windfall when they sell their items in years to come. Irony is the RETAIL price of toys at all time high (just look at Lego, Hot Toys lol), all citing rise in material cost etc as BS justications, hence those who still willing to take the plunge now really need to be prepared they may not recover the retail price later on, let alone make a profit! Appreciate the good intention of yours to make this content nonetheless, cheers~
Toy collecting, comics, and collectibles in general have become too commercialized. I started collecting comic for the nostalgia and memories. Then moved on to toys. Along the way have seen the collecting scene become more and more speculative and business rendering most of my collection worthless due to countless reissues and also new figures/toys. These companies exist to make money, and they know we the millennials will buy whatever they put out because of nostalgia. Hence, they keep releasing new stuff attract new buyers and us to repeat buy. It is up to us to evaluate our own lives and reasons why we started in the first place and not buy into the trap of keep wanting more and more because it will never end. Already companies holding licenses for these characters are selling it to whoever will pay and cheaper toys is going to come into the market. These days, if i want something to keep I like to look into the second-hand market for a reasonably priced item instead of buying new and keep in box.
Same! Haha. Everything you said is what we go through. Luckily we both made it out the other end. Can’t say the same for the others, hence this video to hopefully make them recognise it.
Collecting things you like is a hobby, something you do to make yourself happy. If relate it to making a profit after some time, it is no more fun. Invest in stocks and property better.
Yup that’s correct. All those I sold at losses are ok in my books. Heck selling them at loss is supposed to be the norm But many collectors cannot differentiate it so hence this video. If not can’t help them anymore.
Depending on which toys you are dealing with. Japanese Figures and action toys I can confirm dead liaw, even I try to sell cheap, no one wants it. Very struggling these days. Luckily I hit big brake early.
Toys collecting are not dead, there are still alot of collectors but business selling toys maybe. TCG are not a good investment as well. A booster or a case may not get u profit. instead can be a loss as well. Best is upgrade our skills so that we can get more jobs, earn a higher or more income.
Oh in Singapore context is dying that for sure. The old holding onto their toys thinking they can get something out of it while the new are toy gambling. The business is thriving but def not the collecting part. And Tcg? Whole another cans of worm over there. So many aspects to collecting is not even funny lol.
ok, give those toys to others, who has plenty, but once you do that, in the time of your most need of help , kindnrss shall run away from you, then you will see how i feel now, you don't help the poor, then poor you shall become,.....i will not cuss(because i'm kind), i will not write a nasty letter,...but i will let you find out yourself the truth about me, you don't need others to influence you,...........if you want me as your enemy then fine, so be it,....don't send me nothing,......your choice,.........marius(punk rules).
I personally dont have much of a collection hence i haven't tried selling on Ebay for toys can't comment on that, however trying to sell on carousell in singapore market context is waste of time. Was Quite suprise cash converters would even pay u a $100 for that batch of toys, I was expecting $50 for all lol.
yup was pleasantly surprise too! and haters gonna hate.. their perceived value on stuff when they deem themselves as collectors really skews all objective critical thinking. ah well.
@ASingaporeChipmunk There is one thing that collectors generally don't have which is critical thinking. If not we wouldn't have started to collect in the 1st place, the ultimate winners are always the toy label, distributor and maybe the 1st tier reseller eg: metro (which I don't think are working well for them anymore). Popmart sells directly hence they are label and distributor, the ultimate winner. The solution for collectors is not to buy in general, and really differentiate what is what you really like and buy, HODL to it because thats your passion, hopefully don't get sick so it too fast and get really to take a loss when selling. Dont get me wrong it's easier said than done though, cause most people are generally greedy and assume they are smarter than the market and will profit at whatever they buy. Your video hits at the gut of the typical hording collectors who think they can buy low and sell high and everyone else is a bag holder. The cash convertors clearing must be painful for you but you are clear when it is bopian. Good video, will support your channel!
No offence it’s clear you don’t understand collecting or what toys to invest in. Also anything can make you money if you understand the prices and what to pay
My eBay selling begs to differ. Also, if you ACTUALLY look at prices, which you clearly aren’t, prices have since fallen so much it’s in your own interest to check before you comment lol.
@@ASingaporeChipmunk I just sold one toy for 20,000 usd ? 🤣 Have have a look at sold sales from some toys like mighty max for example. Just some small colour variant monster heads. Over 2000 pounds. 6 months ago same toy 500 pounds. Yes. Fallen hard according to you 😂 maybe lame funko pops and whatever rubbish you collect
Well I did check, lol go do you I guess. Again you win no shade on your win, go do you. This is too funny you collector folks. My weekend is so fun because of you guys thanks for this video!
??? So many to do other than toys to collect. I collect games, TCG, heck I go running also if I don’t collect anything. So not sure what you are trying to get lol.
@@ASingaporeChipmunk new items are always coming. Heck i keep a lot of old coins and old silver coins. Which are not even measuring to value. They have alot of packaging that waste even much more space and i face the same problem of clearing space like everyone else. Plenty of the older generations are passing down stuff. Jewelry boxes. Vases. Stamps. Coins. To the next generation while the next generation are just selling them off to add to their digits in their bank accounts. Thats why i said alot of collection is dead. We dun really have space to keep all these.
DO NOT SELL YOUR TOYS TO CASH CONVERTERS --- sorry but that's terrible advice and you will get below market price - I think this guys done that and felt bad for losing money and tells others to do it but you can just lower it down a fair amount and a collector will buy it instead of the rip-off people at cash converters. Japanese toys are dead like those cheap action figures behind him but certain stuff still has lots of value. if you want to clear out a collection sell it to a re-seller that can make some money off it but not completely lose 80% value like cash converters would offer you.
lol. I have no problems selling to cash converters. Many have in fact sold them ALREADY and you can hold on to your toys for all I care. Also, who says I told you all to just sell to cash converters? I sell to so many places. lol. Dun be a hater when you yourself are stuck with your own collection down the road. This is too funny.
@@ASingaporeChipmunk Unfortunately, the phrase AGREE TO DISAGREE is rare in cyberspace where plenty of keyboard warriors resides. Rational viewers will understand that you are not suggesting that Cash Convertor as the Go To place to sell off their collection, but rather, an option to consider. In anycase, the red flags are littered all over the comment.. "Japanese toys are dead" - Nope they are doing fine and in fact better than western toy makers. "Action figure behind you" - one look and any collector can tell there is no articulation features on every single FIGURINE / STATUE behind you.. and "Cheap?" - I don't even know what to say lol. It's clear you are not dealing with a chap familiar with the toy collectible scene 😉. If anything, this video of yours probably can give you some inspiration on future contents, clearly the topic on toy collection and your hot takes has stirred up emotions from many, both positive and negative responses! Keep up the work mate.
@@CHKhoo-i3q "Japanese toys are dead like those cheap action figures..." ... on a recent trip to Jalan Jalan Japan (thrift store) in JB ... see also heart pain.
@@DonPedroII-uc9pdHmm, in the context of resale value? then yes, Japanese toys and all toys in general are dead imo. Examples like Hot Toys, Lego Modulars, Transformers Masterpiece, star wars, these used to be cash cows for resellers/scalpers but no longer the case since years ago, so naturally Japanese figurines will not be exception. But in the context of Japanese toys dead in terms of new products? They are very much alive and kicking. Japanese toys are driven by anime /manga plus they constantly refresh old IPs like kamen riders, ultraman, gundam, hello kitty etc.. and they have an unending wave of new animes driving the toys production, from dragon ball to one piece to fate grand order to Attack on titans to chainsaw man to spy family.. the products just keep flooding when older IPs like nier automata are still constantly releasing new 2B figurines from many toy makers. So it depends on where one views it.. from a reseller pov, I agree they had seen much better days.. from collectors pov? Japanese toys are in way better shape than western toy makers that only know how to keep repeat old IPs and lazy to create new ones! The good old days of He-Man, G.I.Joe, M.A.S.K, centurions, silver hawks are long gone, all western makers do is rehash transformers, marvel/dc, TMNT.. characters that people already owned for ages..how many variants/reiterations of batman, wolverine, iron Man do collectors need lol. Anyway, just my humble opinion.. good day man!
I think you need to list down or script your video and state your facts one by one instead of saying something first then move on to another, then back to the first again. It's all over the video. Facts, then moving on where you sold them, ebay, carousell, cash converter etc. The entire video sounds like a rant about the toy market going downwards because of Labubu, toy gambling. I mean that's the reason why it's collectible. It's the hype, the marketing, people are being lured to collect or even to gamble. Even for claw machine attracts a lot of people too. Not just collectibles. People have money, they like it, why do you bother? Collectors need to be more innovative. If you think the other market is bringing you down, then i don't think you suit to sell toys for profit as a business. The level of toy collectors in Singapore, maybe you could say it's little, but there are so many different types of collection, you can't just target all. Collectibles market are too big. Too big and you cannot target them all. Labubu is just only 1. You are just got beaten by it? I hope not. It's either you ride with the labubu trend like the many other companies are doing, or wait for another type of collectible to get in trend and ride with it. Else, stick to something you like and find the same community, sell to them. If you are unable to sell, at least you still like them and they continue as your personal collection. You could refute the fact you were not ranting but that's from what I watch since couple of videos back you mentioned your videos are positive but It just give me the negative rant vibes after watching more and more :)
Oh believe me it’s a rant. And also My eBay selling streak begs to differ. Also never needed a community to justify my take on this issue. So many are holding onto their toys and not selling them is what drives me to make this video on a whim. And I know it will get some hate on it…. Because collectors just love to call it like it is in their own echo chamber. But I do appreciate your criticism nonetheless, and your view on this. And yes, it takes negativity to bring out the positivity in all this. Ps: have you actually seen the safra mount Fabre event? Please don’t tell me it’s all positive when non of the toys were selling out those 3 days.
@@ASingaporeChipmunk The more you put it, It's very clear that you got beaten by the recent trends.😂 You can claim you are an Ebay seller for many years. But in this video, It's quite clear that your eBay is not having daily sales either, just a seller who created Ebay seller account a decade ago. You are probably getting a sale once in a while like some carouseller. If not you would not be ranting in your videos. You don't need a community to justify your take but you probably need a community to target selling your toys to people who are interested in. It's constructive feedback. Not a criticism. From your videos about gamers market (telling them to do better) to mount faber (toy collection is dead just because all toys are not selling out), seems like you are pretty much a negative person.😂
We can agree to disagree. Like how you also dunno how to count when I started my eBay account in 2002. No worries lol. And no I never actually followed trend, that’s how I thrive. You dun need to have daily sales to achieve success in life. Sadly I know where your take on it so again, we agree to disagree here too. Never follow trend is how I survive for 20 years on eBay. But I do appreciate your input in the matter no issues on a different approach to what is going on. As with many here also have so many differing views.
I do feel physical media is going extinct eventually and that is extremely disheartening. I too collect physical media, CDs, DVDs, games and I even still keep my cassettes! The rise of digital platform and the ease of accessing digital contents have made physical media obsolete and younger generations wants to be trendy in how they consume these contents. What they do not realise is, digital contents are largely subscription based and users are merely RENTING the contents unless they download them and store in personal harddrive. I am old school and is thankful that there are still sellers like yourself making physical media available. While most are replacing their physical media with digital based, I am going the opposite direction to make last ditch effort to grab physical contents I love before they are gone for good. In this era, electronic stores don't even sell cd/dvd players anymore.. really sad 😢

1 - Economy hasn't been that good and people would prefer to save up their money
2 - Toy Companies like MAFEX and Hasbro has been reproducing sought after pieces which brings down figures that originally has a high market value.
I also start selling before Covi time and thankfully now left those I will keep till I pass on
wah hi five!!
you will be amazed at the prices now keep tanking across the board of late. and i dont think it will recover lol.
you did good!
@
V hard to earn liao compare to the pass unless yours is like super vintage else really no talk.
There is simply not enough physical space today for toys collection. Need to be practical and keep them to the minimal for ultimate passion.
As u guys collect toys but i collect physical media. As i sell my physical media to carousell, i feel that collections are not dead
Now got to be at least those >5k bearbricks, people buy because they think the price will go up and also to flaunt their wealth.
what about James Bond car collections. Those come with the magazine
Can always call or WhatsApp cash converters to check.
Ps: let’s just say to see the same product you sold during Covid days at $900 plus and now can’t even sell at $100, let’s just say the shock to most will be catastrophic to many,
I myself am shocked but not surprised, hence this video. Because I feel, it will never recover sadly.
Appreciate your candid view mate.
So many disillusioned ones and you my friend are the enlighten ones.
There is hope. Just sell and take the loss.
I don't sell my toys so I don't give a dam ... I love them even if they drop down to rock bottom price 😂
I do appreciate your support mate!
Imagine being 40 and you are still collecting toys😂😂😂 NGMI
No need to because you are looking at one right here.
Thanks for watching!
Invest on lego. 2 yrs sell high. make money.
I do you one better, buy Tcg, ANY Tcg, sell in 1 year, instant profit.
No joke now the TCG market is on a high lol.
Have have a look at sold sales from some toys like mighty max for example.
I thought all collecting is dead not just toy collecting
Oh no trading card collecting is well and truely alive, lol.
Others not so much.
Then your hobbies really limited 😅.. so many others still doing well.
@@coclim5712 thats why i change my direction to buy those things i can keep and keep and they dun waste so much space
We dun really have space to keep all these.
i will keep buying HT DX series and store away if under 150... hahaaa
Well that’s one way to look at it.
Haha…
I have alot of things but all collecting dust lol
Cash converter them lah.
@@ASingaporeChipmunk idk where is nearest cash converter for me haha
And come I clap for you for my “cheap” toys behind me.
Bwahahahahaahaha…
This is too funny folks.
And also since when toy gambling is collecting? This era of toy collectors is doomed. lol
My advice to you is mind your own business.
and why arent you doing what you preach?
also thanks for the views!
As u guys collect toys but i collect physical media. As i sell my physical media to carousell, i feel that collections are not dead
As u guys collect toys but i collect physical media. As i sell my physical media to carousell, i feel that collections are not dead
