  • This short film concerns a conversation between a clinical supervisor (female) and clinical student (male). It is meant as a resource to spark conversation about how we can assess cultural safety/competency.
This is an example of poor cultural competency by the supervisor.
    Why is it poor?
    - The supervisor says that the patient is unlikely to understand the terms used in the consent form, so to 'focus her attention on the risks and get her to sign' the form. This is not best practice in terms of communicating effectively with patients. Patients should be made aware of all aspects of what they are consenting to prior to being asked to providing written signed consent.
    - The student attempts to modify the practice by suggesting an interpreter might be needed 'to explain this first part' but he is over-ruled. The supervisor says she has spoken with the patient's husband (rather than the patient) and concludes that 'it's fine.' The supervisor is making an assumption that the husband will pass on relevant information correctly to his wife.
