One of the most influential song from OK computer album in a different way. It inspired a new host of bands in late 90s / 2000s such as Coldplay, Muse and other alternative acts to adopt a more soothing sound in their rock albums. The easy going falsettos became a staple in such bands. Radiohead has always been influential and in this song in particular, their choice of synthetic beats and beeps was purposefully bleak and melancholic. It was 1997- have to understand Rock at that point isn’t quite the sound this song was. And I love how tight the band was. Beautiful ending too.
For first listens I would highly recommend the live basement session for In Rainbows it really helps to watch all of what they do to perform these intricate songs live flawlessly. They are one of the best live bands period try Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, Reckoner, Nude or All I Need or Optimistic or 15 Step or... just try it it may change your perspective on music for the rest of your life.
I didn't like this as much as many of the other tracks on the album on the first few listens but like all Radioheads music it's a grower in fact everything they do is like that. Another song that was not my favorite on first few listens was Weird Fishes/Arpeggi now it's right up there on my huge favorites list. This song is even better when you are listening to the whole album (the way you are supposed to with Radiohead) of course i love this song and the Radiodread version which if you have never heard is amazing Thom actually said it's better than the bands version. I put Radiohead right up there with the Beatles and Pink Floyd as the best bands ever.
I will sub for anyone who trys Radiohhead for the first time if you feel like being challenged try to break down what they are doing musically on the basement version of Weird Fishes/Arpeggi it has mystified many people as far as theory goes. It helps little if you play an instrument in fact it may make it worse.
