I think a once-around orbit to see the lay of the land, then a static shot from behind the customer's boat with both boats in view would be good. It was neat to see an aerial shot of the sandbar and other underwater features, and seeing the position of the boat on the sandbar. I imagine this could help you figure out the best direction to approach a boat and pull it free if they are far from deeper water.
14:30 beautiful view! love the orbiting drone, maybe not the entire time but its perfect as like a one-time overview to get your bearings whats where etc.. 👍imagine that might get harder to pull off in more crowded areas tho. thanks for the vid!
Oh Boy Cpt. Ken that did look harder than you thought it was going to be but the views from the drone were fantastic and the best yet. Keep up the great work which you look like you love doing.
Loved the drone footage. I just recently learned put the drone in sports mode when landing it in your hand…grab it carefully with a couple fingers and drone shuts off on its own. I used to flip it until I learned this better and safer way. Had to practice…but much better now.. POI is good in the boat being rescued
Yeah in sports mode, no flip required, make sure drone sees your hand reaching up …you may have to press down on your controller a bit, grab it… shuts off every time. At least DJI 4 pro does…should be the same for other DJI’s
Hi Captain Ken. I love your content. I love the drone shots too. I prefer to see the drone shots in the inset full time if you can keep both boats in view.
When I see you do a video like THIS one... I think back THAT'S WHY I had Two people aboard Good Seamaritan Rescue boats😁😁😁 Good stuff. Thanks for posting 👍👍👍
I was listening to this gentleman as he asked about how often you performed this "Service" & in the back of my mind I felt like it;s the natural thinking about the CO$Ts involved ? No telling what he was thinking but I was thinking about it & I'd have been working the math out in my own mind as to the value. Running my costs & such, if I were him. Good job & the drone did give an adequate picture of the trouble he was in. They'd have cooked out there before the tide came back in enough to leave. That made the service well worth it, in my humble non boat owning opinion. As usual, nice job. peace
Great video. 😃 I like the moving drone. I see SO many boats stuck there and Beer Can island. Dunken napping boaters who really are clueless about tides. 😝 Rentall boats have to be back by 5pm so many cant wait for hours to float off. I live on LBK 2000 feet from where you were. Weve had yall there towing sailboats off the beach too.
As a DJI drone owner, I thank you for using yours in this video. You need to learn more about the advanced features of the drone, but also how to tell your drone to follow the location of its remote so it can land where YOU ARE during low battery situations, unattended. Yes, you can also have it track you while filming, or the subject boat but unattended landing using your remote as its landing location will save you from having an accidental water landing or loss of your drone. The other feature you will enjoy learning is the automated flight path. You can program the drone to fly a preset path. Using this feature, the drone can fly around both boats, unattended. You can also set up way points and tell the drone when to move from one position to another while keeping both boats in the frame. You can also have it fly, while following you or while tracking the clients' boat. All you will have to remember is that the drone will only be able to stay up for a while before it will need to land to have you swap batteries. For long runs, you will need to have a spare battery charged and ready to be loaded.
It's not capable of doing some of those things. It's the mini 3 pro, so it can track a single object laterally or orbit it, but no waypoints. Also, I can update the Home point to the controller but that's done manually
Excellent drone angle!! The orbiting is good, but I think positioning it so both boats are in the frame would be good and it looks like the static position behind the boat was a good view. The height was excellent because you could clearly see the sea floor nad the angle you needed to travel to get him unstuck. Is the orbiting causing the batteries to drain faster?
Thanks Patrick! The general consensus seems to be orbit is cool if both boats can stay in frame, otherwise static POV. Also, yes. Orbiting seems to be draining the batteries a bit faster
Hey Ken, the orbit shot is great, in my opinion it gives you more editing options...but I felt anxious for you when the drone said it was returning to home 🫣 Took a long time to change towing angle with that much line that you needed to have out, but as soon as you got there she just popped out.
Lol 😂 You and me both especially since I wasn't quite ready to land it yet! I'm still getting used to how much flight time I have after the alarm goes off as this was only the second flight with this drone
@@rickbacon9150 lol 😂 Kinda seems that way unfortunately 😞 We've had more salvages this year from the rain from thunderstorms than we did from a freaking tropical storm. Just kinda crazy
The orbiting drone shot was good, maybe can it orbit a little slower. Or what if it, can it do a race track orbit where it centers on tow boat then on towed boat. Having it orbit gives some perspective on the location.
Now you have to scroll all the way down to comment or reply. Had me checking settings. Thanks, YT, for not notifying. Sorry Capt Ken. just had to put that out there.
I had the master airscrew stealth on my old mavic pro, and boy did that make a difference compared to the OEM props, so I figured i'd give them a shot on my mini 3 pro. I can't say I noticed too much difference in the sound profile, and I wasn't paying attention to flight times either...but they look cool anyways, so for $14, why not go with them?
I’m curious why you (or at least your TB location) doesn’t require the occupants of tows to don pfd while under tow. I thought it was policy everywhere and one of the first rules of towing.
Because once you require something, if something goes wrong, you can be held liable. Our contract with towboat us corporate used to require all of the tow captains to wear a life jacket, until a location had an accident where the captain died because he was wearing one. I don't know the full story, but from what I heard...it was an enclosed cabin, boat capsized, captain was unable to get out of his lifejacket and was therefore unable to escape from the cabin and drowned.
You say super warm water. The water around the B.C. coast where I live is not super warm. It is super cold. You do your best not fall into the drink around here.
Lol 😂 Yep. I lived in the northeast for 18 years and the water up there might get into the mid 60s in the summer if we we're lucky. Down here, that's about the coldest it ever gets
Are you aware of the dynamic tow rope used in off road recovery. See Matt’s Off-road Recovery and you will see how this rope stretches and then recovers to its intended length. Many times that little bit of extra pull the rope affords is enough to break a a stuck vehicle out of mud or sand. There no jerk like there would be doing the same thing with a static rope. Might be a new useful tool. Keep stirring those shift levers ha ha.
Ever heard of snap back? There is a reason not to use elastic tow lines, except for the stretcher when using a dynema main line You want a breaking tow line to drop into the water and not snap into the boats or worse the crew, cutting some one into two
@@RHaarFl Those ropes he is referring are rated in the thousands of pounds. They dont break unless you far exceed this "weight" rating. They were originally used in the Marine industry. This SNAP BACK is mitigated by putting a weight in the middle of the rope so when it snaps back, it is being forced by gravity to hit the ground and never reach back to either tow vehicle. The weight is usually nothing heavier than the weight of a large towel, which is what most use.
The main problem with these ropes is that they’re nylon and they sink. Makes it really easy to get them tangled in your props when you’re getting in position to pull. Polypropylene, polyolefin, or dyneema are what most towboats use because they float.

Yes. We have an airport nearby, so sometimes I'm not able to fly the drone depending on where he boat is stuck
The drone is great! Especially when it gives us a view of the total picture of the situation you are dealing with. Good stuff!

Nice job Cap, another rescued boater. I like a combo of static and overhead live drone footage.

that drone shot starting @9:15 is what it's about. nice!

Great view.... you picked up the moment the boat came free. Fantastic. Thanks for taking the time to create this.
hahaha. Yep. That was perfect timing!

I don't...Unfortunately, I rely on the other boaters to use their brain and pay attention to their surroundings.
Drone shot spot on.
What kind of line do you use for towing?
It's a poly blend. You'd probably know it as Dyneema (that's a trademarked name but same material)
