Lesson 19 / Understand Value and Color

- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- If we paint in color but don't understand value, it is nearly impossible to get the correct color. Our color choices, if we don't understand the value of our color, will nearly always be too light or too dark. The color we choose needs to be the correct value, that's what this lesson addresses.

This is absolutely incredible... I never thought value and color could be broken down to me but it makes so much sense now. Thanks for the tutorial!
Thanks Polar, glad the lesson was helpful.
The New Munsell Student Color Set is a great way to learn hue, chroma, and value. Try to find a second or third edition, not the fourth.
Perfect video! It makes such an huge difference when you use logic behind an composition, instead of just going with your "intuition".
Thank you Renato.
That brush control is amazing
Thank you for making yourself available to those of us who cannot afford to go to out of town workshops!
You are most welcome Carolyn.
Thanks for the great lesson!!! And thank you for not playing that terrible "music" which most art site do. Thanks again for the good lesson. I will be playing it over a few times.
what an original exhilarating tutorial from a Master!I go over nad over again tolearn in depth.Never had I Heard or read about values over colorsTHANK YOU very much
What a wonderful teacher you are !!! I've never heard value and color explained so clearly . Thank you for sharing that information.
I have watched Hundreds of videos , but non of them were as good as yours. So cool, thanks a lot .
This is so awesome. The lesson was GREAT - thoroughly explained and demonstrated. Thank you!
Did anybody else get startled when the girl's face popped outta nowhere? lol

Great tips!!
I just found you on here..I have never done watercolour before, but you make it so much easier to understand and it makes me less afraid to try it..thank you
I’ve learnt more in 12mins then all the other videos I’ve watched
Thank you
this painting is SO GORGEOUS!
i have learned more about painting in this 12 minute video than i had throughout my entire high school art class last year. not once was value even mentioned in my class. absolutely incredible
I should be paying attention to what you're saying since i'm a non-native english speaker; i should be focusing on listening to understand what you're teaching. But dear kind Mr. Miller, the way you drew really captivated me. You brought the drawing into existence and made it so beautiful since the beginning, since hardly ten strokes! That really blew my mind! Thank you so much for posting this video and sharing your lessons with us! 🤍
WOW! When you dimmed the lights the lesson really sunk in for me. Thank you Stan!
Valuable lesson....many thanks...you are a talented instructor too...many thanks.....
thank you Afaf, glad the lessons are helpful!
Hey uh, you may want to use a smaller brush for those lips becau--...oh, okay...nevermind. They're perfect. ;_;
Google him and look at his gallery. Wow.
You never work with a small brush when you start painting
it is roof skech
Cat From The Future 😂
Can you say why?
Never gave "value" that much thought! Thank you so much for the video! This will help so much in improving my skills
Great stuff! I really like your method of teaching! I'm gonna make this my practice today!
Thank god I watched to the end. That last bit with the smart phone feature is what will really help. Thanks.
Stan, expanding on the Ipad idea, here is a tip for determining values that may work for your viewers. Do a swatch chart of your palette. Next scan it and change it in the computer from color to gray scale/black and white. Now scan the reference color portrait and do the same as with the swatches. Now it is easy to compare color values of your palette to the black and white reference. I also scan at different stages of the painting and change to gray scale. Do the same when color mixing. Make examples and scan, then turn to grays on the computer. I have been doing this for years with oil and acrylic paint.
Great tutorial!
Very good, I'm familiar with your approach, classic.
Stan, I discovered your YT videos only a short while ago, but find them to be of tremendous value. This one in particular centers on such fundamentals it should be a part of every artist's introduction to painting - or drawing. Thanks so much for this important teaching. If you travel to teach, sign me up!
Thank you for this explanation, this is very helpful! I’ll start looking at people differently now and trying to understand their color/value 😂❤️
Thank you, Stan, for your emphasis on values. (And all your wonderful videos!) A good painting hinges on values and composition. And I think focusing on values helps make watercolor less intimidating for those new to watercolor. And old to it!
So glad the lesson is helpful Kris.
Thank you Jud, all of my classes and workshops are at www.stanmiller.net
Stan Miller
Stan Miller You video is so easy to follow! I subscribed to you, and as an experienced artist. It was brilliant that you uploaded this video for all artists. No matter if they are a beginner, intermediate or advanced.
I like your video so much!
Stan Miller h
Thanks Stan. I will use the technique of small square holes to isolate varied color tones as often it is not obvious how varied they are on a subject.
The only thing I would have liked you to have mentioned is not just how dark or light colors are but the distinction between saturation and brightness. Colors are made up of the base Hue, then the Saturation (richness) and Brightness (Light or Dark) determines the final tone.
I use a simple color wheel to help me pick the correct tonal value.
That's very kind of you, thanks Stan. You are the great artist who has the spirit of Sharing your art love and effort.
Stan your tutorials are just wonderful and I rewatch them and learn each time and then painting a long time you can never go over the stuff too much so I want to thank you for your efforts.
Thank you so much Yvonne.
Very good video. You're a good tutor, thanks for the lesson.
Glad it was helpful!
Love your approach. Your videos have really helped my fundamentals. Totally changed the way I approach painting, and the improvement has been noticed by my friends and family. Thank you, so much!
So glad my lessons are helpful.
closing your eyes a little also help to see more of the values, if not using a dim light, which in theory is basically the same, less light goes through your eyes. Not an expert, just a student.
Makes so much more sense when YOU paint and teach it than when I try it. But I’m not giving up!
My first watercolor in class in college, I was terrible, I got a C. I realized then, that if I wanted to be good at anything I would have to work at least ten years at watercolor before I would start to get it. It's like learning French, or how to play the piano. How hard and how long are we willing to work at becoming good?
Good stuff. Thanks for the simple (yet maybe not so obvious) tips on how to match shading. Your trick on dimming the lights to see where values clip off works awesome. Not sure if it was mentioned in the video, but to others reading, if you squint your eyes at the same time (while dimming the lights), the underlying form of your subject tends to jump out too. Thanks again.
Squinting works as well, glad the lesson is helpful.
I strive to amaze myself one day ,just like u did to me today.
So good to hear you learned from my lesson, thank you.
Good lesson! It's always nice too refresh your skills from time too time. Correct tonal values always trumps technique.
Awesome, I Remember a technique similar to this from high school... yr lessons make me think of my art teacher & yes she was always my favorite. Thank you ☺️
Culturally Made thank you, glad my lessons are helpful.
I am a self taught artist. I started my art sketching from where I learnt to hold the pencil. but, I did not get the opportunity to play with color in my childhood. hence, when ever I have to color my drawing, I do some mistake. I get a big question that what color should be used first or what color suppose to be.
Your video has taught me the color value. I tried to color a portrait after seeing your video in the same night & It was really very easy to me to select the color because I was not selecting the color but trying to match the color value.
I really wants to thank you very much for your lesson.
Happy to know my lesson helped you Santosh.
Same, I've always drawn with graphite and charcoal. I despise color pencil, pastel, paint, watercolor, etc. But I'm gonna try.
I have a suggestion that may work for you too. Get a headlamp that has a red LED for night vision and look at the photo with that only. When you look at stuff using only red (actually any monochromatic light) your rods are the only sensors in your eyes that work which means you are only looking at intensity. Red green or blue filters are what is used for photography. Red is typically better for contrast. This only works for reflected mediums (ie not back lit LCD/TV screens). BTW this is a throwback to when I used to do B/W photography and worked in the darkroom developing my own photos!! Fun days as a kid !!
Thank you so much Sir, Very good job to see the value and colour in gesture photograph, in improving portrait painting.in the same portrait different values and using colour that techniques is useful for me
thanks so much for your help.
So glad the lessons are helpful!
Thanks for your time and contribution to the young art community. Thanks a lot sir. Im suscribing and looking forward your channel. Salutes of a freshman from Argentina 🙌

Thank you for this video. You make this portrait simple/easy.
I am new to this method; therefore, I appreciate your work. Thanks!
Excellent! Thanks for making and sharing this! Greetings from Brazil.
Thank you. For some reason your explanation was clear to me. I finally understand the value term.
So glad it makes sense...it took me years to figure out the difference between color and value...
Very nice demo first time understand values. Thanks
Eye opening! Thank you for this amazing video

Really nice lesson on tonal values. Thanks.
Glad the lesson was helpful!
i´ve been painting portraits for years, never thought about this part of it in a "values" way.
Bic narok That's what it's all about, I bet your portraits improve 100% after really paying attention to value : )
Bic narok
Wow, this is the lesson Ive been looking for!!! Brilliant
Thank you. That was really interesting and informative for a learner like me.
Very informative video, I really like how you went through your painting process carefully unlike most vids where everything is explained in cursory fashion lol THANK U FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO👍🌸
Ivankov Wink so glad my lessons are helpful Ivonkov.
Finally! Okay, so I’ve been trying to figure out how to describe my struggle when it comes to painting values, and within the first few seconds, you described it better than I ever have! I’ll sketch out my portrait and the portrait will look great as far as proportions go, but as soon as I start to paint I feel like I’m ruining a good sketch, almost. I’m going to refer back to this video while I paint my next portrait! I already think it will be an improvement. Thank you so much!
Probably the number one mistake in painting, people worry about color and technique more then getting the value correct. Glad the lesson is helpful Emily.
I rarely use digital tools, but for practicing values I like to black and whiten an image and then take out the values on a grey background, so I can find the range of values. Then I bring back the colors in and can much better understand the values of most of the colors.
Amazingly helpful. Thank you 😊
Me: Ok, I got this...let's do this
Me after: ..........search "abstract painting"
i don't know why i never saw you in my reccomendations :D but this is really useful . Thank you for uploading!
Glad it was helpful!
I totally loved this video and also the great tip on the end with the IPad to see the values.
Thank you Stan for sharing and all the love from Holland - Lineke
yeah black and white is all very well but the next step seems the issue ; how now do we translate the values into colour?
This is what I'm finding that I need work on as well.
I have learned so much from you. Thank you for taking the time to upload these videos
thank you, so glad the lessons are helpful.
thanks a lot to help me understand this important issue. Great video, God bless you
This was really great! Im new to watercolor and still having trouble knowing how to mix a certain value consistently. I'd love to see a video of how you mix your paint to consistently get the desired value! Thank you.
Omair Jamal Thank you Omair. Watch all my videos, they will show you how to mix paint to get the value and color you need. Make sure your paint is soft, not hard, and watch the lesson on learning how much water to use in your brush.
You are an excellent teacher and very generous. I appreciate your reply and will study your videos in their entirety. Have a wonderful day!
I wrote a computer GUI that allows me to use a mouse to sample a digital photo and read out the Munsell hue, value, and chroma numbers. That took a lot of research and effort, but in the end it worked much better than any other such program That i could find.
This was really helpful-thanks for posting
Glad it was helpful!
great lesson, immediately my paintings improved, it was crazy to see a real
face appear once I got my value correct
Thank you, so glad the lesson is helpful.
