PS2 was a beast. I remember an interview with George Lucas in a June 1999 playstation magazine. According to him the PS2 was more powerful then the computers they used to make the phantom menace episode 1! It was also classified as a "super computer". Here in America we didn't get it untill around October 2000, and that wait felt like forever since it was first announced in March 1999. It has an amazing DVD player. I have one DVD my Sony Blu ray player (ironically) skips on that disc but PS2 plays it just fine.

I have a slim PS2. The laser for the blue discs doesn't die as quickly, and still works on mine (and hopefully will for a long time).

7:40 The PlayStation 2 was the console that majorly pushed the DVD format in the early 2000s and in fact for a while it was some peoples primary DVD player for many years since at the time DVD players cost an arm and a leg (Titles started coming out on DVD in, Japan 1996, USA 1997 and UK and Europe 1998) so the PS2 was a more cost effective alternative to a bog standard DVD player and you got more out of the investment.
A similar situation happened in 2006 when the PS3 had on board Blu Ray support which helped Blu Ray win the HD format wars against HD DVD (however the higher price tag of a PS3 meant Sony made a loss on each unit sold and Blu Ray didn't have the same success that DVD had, and still has because over 22 years later (14 years co-existing with Blu Ray and 4 years co-existing with 4K UHD) you can still buy new movies on DVD, this is in stark contrast to when DVD sales eclipsed VHS sales in 2003 and they stopped releasing titles on VHS in 2006).

It would be interesting to see what happens if you put a Blu Ray disc in a PS2, although I can imagine the results would be underwhelming since all I got when I stuck Blu Rays in DVD players were read errors, (I don't have a UHD player or UHD discs so I can't judge).
