    Also, Edwin Jagger is a family owned small company in Sheffield England. My late dad was a machinist, so I appreciate the mission, design, and quality that Edwin Jagger talks about on their website about us company video. Haven't researched Merkur yet.

      Merkur are an older company but they make everything from blades, to bars and razors. Both are great companies when it comes to safety razors.

    After having watched the entire video, I was quite surprised about the final verdict.
    Judging from your statements, the shave was similarly close with each razor, but you got some weepers and visibile skin irritation with the DE89, while the shave with the 34C seemed quite unproblematic and smooth.
    I myself are not biased to any brand, but based on what I saw and heard from you, I'd take the 34C.

    I have both of these razors in my collection, and they are my two favorite razors. My very first razor was the Merkur 34c, and I like it slightly better because I prefer two piece razors more. Both of these razors are SPECTACULAR for new shavers and either one is the only razor you need. These razors have nearly identical fantastic shaves that will not irritate your skin. I recommend a feather blade with both of these razors as well.

    I own both of these razors and, to be truthful, I love them both. I always use Feather blades in all my razors simply because their extreme sharpness makes a BBS shave much easier to achieve with the least amount of pressure. For some reason, the Edwin Jagger seems to deliver a smoother shave. It's quite easy to find the correct angle with the Jagger. The handle on my DE89 has a ribbed, black rubber surface that makes gripping the razor very easy. I wasn't at all surprised with your verdict. The Edwin Jagger DE89 rocks!

    I own both and used and still use the EJ for a long time. For me the EJ is pretty particular about what blades it liked and with some blades it can bite you from time to time. The 34C is much more forgiving when it comes to that. IMO, if I was to advise someone who was only going to get one I'd say get the 34C. Fit and finish is a tad better, blade changing system is better and it's easier to hone in on a blade you like.

      Kevy Shaves shaving always very personal thing for all involved products really. People always ask what's the best cream/soap, razor, blade, brush etc etc etc... DE shaving can be very rewarding and, ultimately, save you a few bucks over cartridge shaving, but if you're picky it can be very pricey upfront as you hunt for "the best" at least for you. I have a Merkur Futur, 34C, EJ and a Gillette fat boy and slim adjustable from the 50s. It seems that each likes some blades more than others. Non adjustable razors are the pickiest as blades can have their own grind angles and things so I highly recommend a blade sampler pack to friends looking to get into DE shaving.

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  7 років тому

      Great advice Pete. Blades are so different in different razors. It's a bit of a minefield finding what works best for you. Cheers. Kevy 😀

    Great video, Kevy! Thank you for giving us an unbiased presentation of why both the 34C and the DE89 are excellent razors in their own right.
    I know and like both of them, too. If somebody asked me which one of those two was going to be my "shaving companion", I'd probably take the good old DE89 (or Mühle R89 = same razor, just made in Germany, Edwin Jagger and Mühle have been co-operating for many years). Feather blades certainly work very well with such mild razors, but do try mild yet sharp blades such as the Sputnik, Nacet or Silver Blue (all made by P&G in St. Petersburg, Russia), too. If you have a tough beard and like a little more aggressiveness to your shave, try the Astra Superior Platinum or the Polsilver Super Iridium (both made by P&G St. Petersburg).

    I have both razors. My first razor which I felt in love with was de89 and I was so bummed when I bought 34c. The simple reason was that de89 blade feel is more prominent and for a newbie is kinda helpfull always ''feeling'' where the blade is.
    Now after many years of daily shaving routine and many razors off my hands (including 6s) I settled with 34c and I am not changing. You can't go wrong with 34c very smooth goes fine with most of blades out there and i think it is much more heavy duty from the de89. Feels more solid and ''traditional''. The de89 is more shiny but more fragile. Broke the thread once because ''I tightened it too much'' the shop manager said, something you'll find happens a lot.

    I’ve always liked the Merkur razors. I began double edged shaving by purchasing the Edwin Jagger. I later tried the Merkur. Both are very good and reasonably priced razors. One of my current favorites is the Merkur 37C slant razor. Of course, the 37C is recommended for more experienced shavers. I also prefer the Astra razor blades.
    The bottom line is that every face is different. Flip a coin and get one of them. They are about the same in aggressiveness. Once you get comfortable with DE shaving, you’ll never go back to cartridge razors.

    Wow! Feather Blade! Your beard is probably much tougher (like wire) than mine. I started out with the Jagger DE89 and love it even though I now have a wider selection to choose from, I still really enjoy the Jagger every time I use it. I tried the Feather blades and found them to be WAY more blade than I need and got more weepers than with Astra Greens and a new favorite, the Wilkinson Sword blades. I do realize that everyone’s beard and skin is different so the combination for the “best” shave is going to be about as individual as finger prints! Thank you for your review of these two great razors Kevy!

    Good evening Kevy, I looked into these two razors in the hope of finding a medium aggressive razor that was robust enough for travel. I had settled on the Merkur 34C...that is until I found this vintage Gillette in the Antique Mall near my home. I found the shave from a 1938 to 1941 (pre-war model) Gillette Fat Handle Tech gives a very comfortable shave and it built to last the rigorous of travel. It was a great buy at $15 USD...plating in mostly intact and in nearly new condition. You got to love something that is sold brass with nickle plating...at least more than chrome over pot metal. If you get the chance to try one of those vintage Gillette Techs please do. I think you will enjoy the simple ruggedness of these superb razors.

    Good review and comparison. I have both razors and in my humble opinion, I give the edge, slightly to the 34C as an every day shaver. It is VERY smooth. For me, the Jagger is surprisingly slightly more aggressive so I don't use it every day, but save it for a beautiful weekend shave after a couple day's growth. They are both excellent though. The 34C is more user friendly with it's two piece, and the Jagger more beautiful in its diamond cut variant. To me at least.

    A great idea of comparison and contrast for these two trusted performers. You highlighted even subtle nuances like weight, and overall length. Then there was a practical demonstration of each using the same blade, and soap with a pre-shave for the sake of proper prep. It was a well executed, even matched application of these highly recommended, and trusted razors. BUT, the scene stealer, to me, was the OSP Neroli!! What a rich, glistening, creamy smooth lather!! You mixed just enough water to optimize the emollients, but still kept peaks, and a sheen the made me envious beyond the beautiful contest and its competitors. Who would've guessed that OSP is the Alan Rickman of the wet shaving world. Well done, my friend. Please extend kind regards to Mrs Kevy, and Riley- The Hound of the Parrs.

Like the long thread which scews in I'm sure that would help in stability. Although it's short in stature, not a problem for me. Easy to clean, nice chrome finish. Get a Muhle R89 Twist. You get a 2 piece razor with the 89 head. The blade alignment is perfect on the first try and it’s heavier. The 34c and DE89 are still in my rotation , but nothing beats a twist.

    Thanks for the shave and comparison Kevy. I have both and side with the EJ. I started with the 34C, used it for 2 months and the shaves were inconsistent. Switched to the EJ and it all seemed to fall into place for me very quickly. Every now and then I switch back to the 34C for a shave but the result is always the same (it might be mind over matter!!!). I agree on the ease of finding the angle and handle length being positives.

    Heh, totally agree with you. When I first started off my go to was the Merkur 38c (which afaik is basically the same as the 34c but with a longer handle). Used to avoid the de89 since I'd get more nicks since to me it also seems a bit more aggressive, but that is a good thing now since I can look presentable with a one pass against the shave, just to be lazy lol

      I realize your post is a year old and you probably have tried other blades but... I had the same problem with the DE89 when using feather blades. With Astra Green or Wilkinson Sword blades, the only time I get weepers with the DE89 now is when I get careless, moving to fast etc. The DE89 is so comfortable that sometimes forget that it can “bite”.

    Great review and great channel but today, I bought the Merkur 34C for $29.99 shipped and the Edwin Jagger DE89 Laser 3d (razor used in video) is available for $68 shipped. Price does make a difference and comparison of products should be done within a narrow price difference...unless the point of the video is to decide if the price difference of two products is a value or not. Clearly this was just a shave quality comparison, which is like comparing 2 vehicles' performance with one costing more than twice as much.

    Nice test Kevy, I haven't seen anyone do a direct comparison of them before 😌👏
    I have both, and I really like them, but I just prefer the ........ 34C, but only just.
    Both are excellent razors, they have great heads, are as easy as any DE to use, and I get bbs shaves with both of them.
    I like the fact that the 34C is a 2 piece (fingers well away from the blade when (un)screwing the handle), I prefer it's weight, and I like its short handle, but I'm not very big, and neither are my hands.
    Saying that, the DE89 has some things going for it compared to the 34C, it's got a better finish, it's got a more common 3 piece design so you can easily change the handle, and the default handle is longer if you prefer that and want to stick with it.
    So if I was to recommend one, then I would say get either of them 😂

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  7 років тому +1

      Dave C Ha ha! On the fence Dave?! Both have their pros and cons. The fit and finish on the EJ is better but then it's slightly more expensive. The 34C is a great 2 piece razor and does shave great but the option of changing the handle on the EJ is also another plus point for it. Very hard to choose a winner here!

    • @bendycard
      @bendycard 7 років тому +1

      ha ha, I might be 😂
      Kevy, It's so difficult, 😩
      Some people say the 34c is more efficient, others say the de89, whereas I can't tell any difference. I find both heads as easy to use as each other but I've never done your side by side comparison.
      Despite preferring the 34C, if I had to go for one, then because of the finish, and the versatility of the 3 piece design, I'd probably say the de89, because it's so similar to and as good as the other one which I think is marginally better, and that I'd buy 😂.
      There you go, how decisive was that 😌👏

  • @hba8103

    I would think that the two piece design shields the razor from being damaged in the case of drops as the threads are deeper in the handle. Looking at some reviews, I've seen where the bolt on the DE89 breaks when dropped. Could also be the quality of the metal being used. Thoughts?

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  7 років тому +1

      Yes, the two piece design would offer more protection for the thread on the top cap. I'm not sure of the quality of materials used in the Edwin Jagger razors. Cheers. Kevy :)

    • @TheCogitech
      @TheCogitech 6 років тому +1

      The threaded bolt on my Merkur 37C pulled right out of the head due to 2 years of regular use (no drops). Maybe I was tightening the handle too much, but if the head was made of hardened steel instead of junk metal, the bolt would never have pulled out. This is a weakness in the Merkur design, regardless of how long the threaded bolt is. I can only hope that the Edwin Jagger isn't also made out of "wax". It is a tool for MEN, after all.

I chose it because some yrs back I heard about problems w/ the 34C and uneven blade alignment from one side to the other. Google "Merkur 34C uneven blade alignment" and you might find what I'm talking about.

    After trying both and owning the de89 for me the best beginning razor is the razorock mission. It's really more efficient very forgiving and the head is around 7 or 8 dollars and the most expensive complete razor with a better handle then all the de89 handles is 20 dollars. If you want a heavier and nicer handle Westcoast shaving has affordable and quality handles. For price point performance and quality razorock mission beats both the de89 and merkur 34c.

    Why did you use 4 post shave products? seems like a bit of overkill, although its hard to argue with your skin being completely free of any irritation. However from what i understand if your going to use an aloe/witch hazel post shave that's all you need. No need for an alcohol after shave or even the Nivea because they're for the same purpose. No need for any alcohol products since you can disinfect with things that don't dry the skin. great video though!

    I had my first DE shave today mate. I got quite a lot of irritation, and some blood. No major cuts though. I used the factory Merkur blade. It seemed to tug quite a bit. I also didn’t clean and break in/oil my brush. I didn’t know you had to, so I’m doing that tonight. I think my skin needs to get used to it, as I’ve been using an electric beard trimmer for about 3 years. I managed to get a very close shave with two passes though.

      Good to hear that Harvey. The Merkur blades aren't the best and that, along with it being your first shave may have added to your,irritation. never mind, at least you didn't cut yourself too badly by the sound of it. Rinse the brush out in some anti bacterial soap and lather that up in the palm of your hand to make sure it's clean, then rinse it out thoroughly before letting it dry before the next shave. Your skin will need to adapt to having a sharp blade going over it. stick with it and keep me posted. Kevy 👏👍

      Mine just arrived in the post today (DE89). Got some Proraso green soap, and the green Proraso pre shave and post shave balm to, and also the Semogue 1438 Boar Hair Shaving Brush.
      I'll be trying them all out in a few days time, which is when I am due to have another shave (I only shave twice a week as I like to have a bit of stubble most of the time).

      Brilliant. Sounds like you got some good shaving gear. Be sure to let us all know how it goes. Cheers. Kevy 😀

      Kevy Shaves Will do. I’ve also ordered a variety pack of various brands of blades, as I read and watched from various places that it’s a wise thing to do when you are new to DE shaving.
      Hopefully I’ll be able to find out which type/brand suits me and the razor the best 🙂👍🏻

    I have thinking about this for a while and perhaps you can answer this... why does the DE89 look so much like the Mühle R89 and what are the differences? Loved the video.

      They are probably the most copied heads in wet shaving. Not really wlly much difference to be honest. They both feel very similar. Cheers. Kevy 👍

    Oh, I wish that I had come across your review a week or so ago. Decided to move back to a single blade DE safety razor after 40 yrs of cartridge and electric razor shaving. I'm not doing so bad with my choice of razor but getting a little razor rash at the base of the neck, although this is getting less as my technique improves. Nevertheless, a bit of sound research first would have probably altered my purchase decision.

      Hey Allan. Maybe try some different blades in your razor. That might help. Cheers. Kevy 😀👍

    If you're using the same blade, what do you think is the reason for the different results after the 2nd pass?

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  5 років тому +1

      I think it feels different as there's less stubble to take Dow after the first pass. Kevy 😀

    Have you ever tried Gillette silver blue blades? If you have, what do you think about them?

    • @kevyshaves4109
      @kevyshaves4109  4 роки тому

      Yes, I have tried them. I just bought 100 of them last week. I think they're great, I really like them. Cheers. Kevy 👍
