+James Livingston Smith was supposed to be deleted. He knew the ramifications and what he was supposed to do but he was compelled to not follow the instructions (henceforth, Neo unintentionally set him free). After being jacked in by Ex Machine (whatever that machine is) Smith absorbed Neo, causing that machine to do what Smith was supposed to have done once Neo eliminated him the first time. It's really not that complex.
P.S. Smith is obsessed and compulsive about everything having a purpose and it always following that purpose (it is purpose that drives us, binds us, creates us, blah blah blah).

It is supremely ironic. Smith was the program originally created to maintain order in the system and he ends up rebelling while Neo rebels to begin with and ends up recognizing that there's no escaping the system. "You were always right. It was inevitable." Smith can't rationale this and he's the one who ends up looking more human and Neo is the one with a stoic robotic look in his eyes. True irony.

Well technically the Smith virus was terminated because Neo was connected to the source and when he was assimilated, the machines sent a surge through Neo in the real world to destroy the virus.
At this point Smith had taken over the matrix. Neo was the only one left standing in his way. Smith's purpose was to kill the source that wanted to delete him.

When programs complete their purpose they get destroyed and go back to the Source (the mainframe of the machines). After Neo destroyed Smith in the first film, his purpose got rewritten to destroy Neo (Smith gained the power to multiply himself, so he could gain additional power to balance himself against Neo). If Neo were to be destroyed, agent Smith's purpose would be completed, and he could be destroyed (returned to the Source) as well. Neo realized this himself after the Oracle spoke through Smith "Everything with a beginning has an end.", that's why Neo made the CHOICE to surrender. Smith couldn't foresee this with the Oracle's powers, because the Oracle can't see past a choice.
So in the end, when Smith took over Neo's body, his purpose was completed and since Neo was directly connected to the Source, the machines could directly destroy Smith. Capiche?
Naw he only thought he was now doing want he wanted but if he would've just let go of killing Neo he would have won. But like the guy said he was completing his destiny but beating Neo. Once he did that he return to the source like the guy said!

@@keanumoningka9419 If Neo didn't go to the machine city to make a bargain, Zion will be destroyed, Agent Smith have taken over all the program and human connected in the Matrix, and his destructive programming nature will not cooperate with the machine, so all the human in the Matrix will die, as will all the human in Zion.
The Machine will lose their power source, most the machine in the machine city will die out eventually, but some might survive by going into sleep mode and wait until the sky is clear natually again so that they can use Sunlight as power source again. That's why the architech said there are level of survival they are willing to accept.
Although the machine prefer not to go to that route, as it will be out of their control, so they accept Neo's bargain of peace (and machine don't break contract or promises after agreement is made), so after Neo succeeded, the war is over, until one day it is probably human, who will start the war again, because its in our nature, we will get over-confident or stupid enough to go to war with the machine again.

So all the human who want to leave matrix and live in the real world will be freed, however, i think many people could not stand the real world and want to stay in the Matrix, the real world is quite harsh for human in the Matrix universe.
However, if human dare to go on war with machine again, then the cycle of machine controlling human will start again.
Smith rewrote Neo’s code and because Neo was plugged directly into the mainframe, it allowed the Machine God to delete Smith. The Machine God couldn’t do that earlier because it didn’t have Smith’s code because Neo altered it in the first film when he destroyed him.
Smith and Neo combined are The One, machine and man, yin and yang.

So basically smith infected all humans in the matrix (and also programs like the oracle), then after the machines got access to smith through neo, smith was cleared out and thus all humans/programs were back again.
+Samuel Zambrano Once Smith absorbed the Oracle he pretty much became as strong as Neo. He also saw the vision of being victorious (Neo had the Oracle's vision as well). But just because you can see the future doesn't mean it will happen. Neo's proven that on and off saving Trinity and Morpheus, also proving that he is the one. Therefore, once the Smith absorbed Neo (if he knew that ex machine jacked him in then Smith would not have absorbed him) the Ex machine managed to finally get rid of Smith (which if you can recall in Matrix Reloaded, Smith was to follow protocol and terminate but he said he was compelled to not leave and Neo unintentionally freed him).
P.S. Neo is the one, not Smith, and the main comment about destroying oneself is bs. Smith is Neo's opposite. They're not the same.

I've always loved how totally freaked out Smith gets. "Get away from me! It's a trick!"
And the fact that he looks and sounds so relieved/stressed out after absorbing Neo adds to it all. Even himself (Neo Smith) looks kind of like "What the hell is up with you?"
Neos last words are "It was inevitable". He is describing the entire trilogy, even from before, when the machines first spawned consciousness and took over humanity, chilling...perfect last words for a perfect trilogy.

I always found it interesting that the machines gently lowered Neo's body and carried it away. They had some respect, even appreciation for what he had done. Morpheus had said it, but Neo was really fighting for everyone. The majority of humanity could only survive in the Matrix at that point.

Smith is a virus that is rampaging out of control. Neo's code and Smith's code are opposites of each other and are both creating an imbalance in the Matrix. The Architect, like a good antivirus program, would love to disseminate their code and remove it from the Matrix. Neo hooking directly to the Source and getting copied by Smith gives the Architect both of their codes on a silver platter. He disseminates their collective code and removes them. Why Neo dies is a mystery to me.
No, the lead robot dude injects a virus into Neo after he gets converted by Smith, stop trying to make it seem more complicated than it is.

Did you forget the conversation the Architect had with Neo in the second movie? The Architect wanted him to go through the door that leads to the source where they can disseminate the code he is carrying thus reinserting the prime program. The Architect needs their code to be hooked up to the source and Neo getting copied over by Smith while he was hooked to the source was the solution.
That's just so he can pick the people who will repopulate Zyon and be the one who will guide them through the process of finding The One in the next matrix to make sure the process continues, it has nothing to do with stopping Smith who it has been mentioned is actually an anomaly occurring in this version of the matrix

The question is whether he dies. Consider the purpose behind the world of Zion. The first version of the Matrix was rejected on mass because it was too ideal. The current version allows minds to reject it, but consider the world they are ejected into -- no mind would ever reject that as too ideal. As the Architect says, it's about control. There is no reason at all to allow minds to exist in the real world when they can simply be moved into a world they are less likely to reject. Neo's powers persist into the world of Zion because he subconsciously recognizes that both are equally unreal. If we take the video's description as a good analysis of the pattern, the third path is the path Neo took -- the path of transcending to the real world.
I don't understand the hate for this movie.
It is not a favorite of mine because both Trinity and Neo die. The death of the main character and whoever is closest to them never increases my appreciation for a movie that it occurs in.

dahwriter no, you're forgetting that the reason neo sacrificed himself was for peace between the 3 worlds; machine city, Zion, and the humans inside the program. Zion won't be destroyed for the 6th or 7th time, humans in the program will be able to choose whether to leave or not (considering the idea the oracle had; if humans were given a choice instead of always trying to be trapped, a lot of them would still stay inside the program) which will ultimately allow the machines to still have a lot of energy off the humans.

My interpretation of it was that Smith's whole purpose and existence was to destroy Neo. By finally doing so, Smith no longer had a purpose and thus was deleted

That doesn't explain the machine pulsing Neo's body when his body was taken over. Machine used Neo's body to connect to Smith and uploaded a virus to Smith's network. Smith is a different network because remember in first movie, Smith said he was "free"

That is more of a themeing element to add a layer of depth to the overall conflict and resolve some of the metaphor built up around the characters. I do like it however, perhaps that would have been an easier sell to audiences who can't understand being shown something and have to be told.

People and critics alike didn´t like the film for a very good reason: They didn´t wanted to think.... they wanted answers..... that´s why it was anticlimatic for all the "experts". Real masterpieces makes you think and use your imagination about what happened later. I remenber watching this movie and this part at the cinema back in december 2003 and I was only 14 years old and It was so fucking EPIC. I loved the trilogy.

Well then fill us in, please explain what your theories are.
There are no theories, the whole trilogy as it is referencing specific
theological, philosophical and sociological beliefs is straight forward,
but you have to have done your Work yourself. Or do you honestly went for
the longshot for me going on and spilling it out for you.
There is an ancient Greek proverb "Συν Αθηνά και χείρα κίνει" which translates
"Along with Athena, move your own Hand" and simply means don't expect
praying or depending on others do the trick, you have to go through on your own.
Now, here gave you a bit of an indirect insight regarding the "Know Thyself" that is
written on the Oracle's kitchen door, which translates to "Γνώθι Σαυτόν" which was
engraved on the door of the Mantium of Delphi where the Seeress / Oracle resided
in the ancient Greece.
Smith was, now without purpose, connected to the machine mainframe and thus could be destroyed. After the Oracle dropped the line, Neo 'found out why' he entered this infested Matrix: It was not to beat Smith, but to surrender and die. All of this wasn't about the individuals but about the building of a human bridge between system and anomaly/virus (the reoccurring failure of it which was at this point unstoppable due to Neo's previous choice of love/choice to keep going) to prevent it from crashing eventually establishing an argument for peace on the machine-side. The humans gained another chance. Thanks, Oracle! Love was the key... at least this time.

In the world we live in it is often understood that those who wield the most force decides what will and will not happen. Neo throws all that on its head by choosing not to try. Not that he is going to give up on his goals, but that he will achieve them through enduring their worst yet remaining true to his own. You see Neo does cannot defeat his opposition by sheer power, because they will remain committed, but if they see even death won't stop him then they will see fighting Neo is pointless.

Neo's refusal to die at the end of the first film got copied into Agent Smith when he appeared to die.
By accepting his own death, then being transformed into yet another Smith clone, Neo's acceptance was copied back through all the Smiths, causing them all to die.
Smith was a Program, vulnerable to being re-written so long as he used part of Neo as part of his own programming.
***** He got into a habit of defeating by absorbing. His hubris caused him to ignore the risk of further 'contamination' of the sort that his crazy conquest plan was entirely made of. He thought he would copy over Neo, but part of Neo again copied over part of him.

There is the fan theory that Neon isn't the one. The prophecy of the one promised the destruction of the Matrix. Neo never destroyed it. Morphus also had Power alike Neo. What if they do a sequel to reboot the franchise with someone to destroy the Matrix, the Machines and bring Humanity back to the Surface.

In the Smith/Morpheus scene, he tells Morpheus that he feels trapped and that it it his fault. If it werent for him he would be flowing freely.(not needed) He then says to morpheus: "The key is somewhere in that mind." Referenced as the code to Zion. But it means that he (fear) is trapped by the mind. In the end scene of part 1, Neo, after trying to fight his fears in stead of runing from them (which is useless, there an illusion of the mind) then realises the agents for what they are.

its all about balance, yin and yan, neo and smith, smith was designed to balance out neo so as neo got stronger, there was more smiths, when neo allowed smith to take over him and kill him, there was no more purpose for smith so he dissapeared too
well yes and no. a machine returns to the source for deletion, but, that machine has to choose to be deleted. neo had chosen to be deleted. remember, smith originally returned to the source but choose to remain. he wanted to be rid of not only neo, and the matrix, but also the machines. to him, all of them were a part of the imbalance. neo however was told by the oracle to die, and he said i want to die. his code wanted to be deleted, and by accepting that, once smith took his body, the underlying code still carried the deletion clause.

in actuality smith's shell was destroyed. the actual program had to return to the source but refused to do so because his purpose wasn't fulfilled. Or, we could say that he refused to return to machine city for deletion or upgrade and thus was beyond their reach,until that is, he unwittingly hacked neo's brain pan. and having the api wihtin him that allowed machine city to access all of his duplicates and delete them all.
I suspect however that Neo's code that can reboot the matrix with the solution to a century worth of rejections is in actuality the one, and the neo we knows simply the os running in virtual memory.
tl;dr smith may have gained the equation from neo's os thus giving him a new purpose, or he may be an exile that's unreachable by the source unless he gains Neo's decision to be deleted by unwittingly assimilating neo who was plugged into machine city.
2. Point two is Neo's soul or hard drive may be the real neo and the one we've met may be the os loaded from the hard drive to the ram.
Now thats what i call speculation. Nothing about soul is in neither of 3 movies at all neither connections between people and literal physical things that make part of a computer, other than humans being batteries for the machines.

I entertain the idea that Neo/Mr. Anderson didn't die there. Rather that he passed out from the extreme stress. Yes, sad music and carrying him away on a type of stretcher/platform signifying death. The machines promised peace, but they didn't say anything about not keeping Neo and taking care of him for later. He could still be very well alive. ... or at least I hope.

Two things happen smith virus completes his programming having infected everyone in the matrix.
Second by infecting neo who was directly hooked up to the matrix mainframe smith by virtue led himself to his own demise and created the connection to terminate himself

The Matrix should have ended with a pan out of Morpheus smiling after they won the war and then showing him in the Matrix battery cell signifying that it was all part of a construct to keep the human mind occupied.

Man, Agent Smith became the embodiment of all that he said to Morpheus during the interrogation scene. He became a disease, a cancer upon the Matrix, he became a virus continued to destroy until there was nothing left, so as with the humans, the machines had to delete him. This is the real danger of giving machines or programs human emotions, they can't be as easily stopped as a human.
Right at the part where smith says "wait, I've seen this" you can totally hear the voice Hugo weaving used as Megatron in transformers

In the end the martial arts training didn't matter. The more I dig deep into the last film the more I understand and actually appreciate it. At first I thought it sucked because it wasn't the ending I expected.
