  • Heading back out to the world's biggest mountain bike jumps, after missing last years huge event. This year I've come prepared with the sickest new custom Downhill Scott Gambler bike, custom painted by Fat Creations, huge thanks as always to them for doing it.
    Heading out to meet Sam Reynolds, Matt Jones and a huge crew out there, thought the custom bike would be perfect for the South African sun.
    I also thought whilst building this bike I'd answer a couple of the most common questions I get asked on how to 'Get sponsored' these days, went into as much detail as possible and hopefully gives you guys at home a good idea of how to progress your mountain biking career.
    Here is a compents list for you guys as well;
    Scott Gambler 2023
    Fox suspension - Fox 40 200mm up front, DhX Coil in the rear
    DMR - Death Grips, bolts, Axe Cranks, Pedals
    Deity - BF800 bars, stem and Speed Trap saddle
    Enve - New M9 wheels, 29' front, 27.5" rear
    Hayes - Dominion in limited Purple
    Pirelli - DHM front, DHT rear
    Sram - XO derailleur
    Fully built by MB Cyclery.

    Love the message. At 47 years old I only started mtb 3 years ago after 20 years of Northern California road racing. Freeride sponsorship isn’t on the table. In reality, unless you’re at the very top of the sport, young, personable, and multi talented, you’re not gonna make any money through sponsorship anyway. Find a different hustle and ride for fun. Thanks to guys like Brendan, Matt Jones, Sam Pilgrim, the message to just go out and have fun and progress has hooked me and thousands of other folks. Fastest growing bike scene in the world imo. I never thought I’d ever own a dj and a DH bike but here I am, obsessed with learning to throw shapes and take my hands and feet off bc it’s so ridiculously fun and feels so good.

    I never got sponsored, but i was lucky enough to make friends with Frank Wadleton and i used to get him stoned at his workshop so he sold me a Motorhead at cost for $1200 and then he made me a new rear end for the bike when I cracked the rear triangle. I watched him program new parts on the CNC and cut these parts for me that I knew were for me alone. Was a really cool feeling

    Great advice - no escape from grinding if you want to be a top rider - also bang on with racers making the best riders - you give a bit more when you’re competing so it tunes the skills

    If anyone is wondering what "new bike" Bren talks about:
    There's a new Scott Voltage that will be released next week.
    Unfortunately it's a boring e-bike now, instead of the bona-fide shred sled that it used to be.

    Don't bother getting sponsored, get a job in finance that will allow you to buy whatever gear and go riding. You're probably not good enough to get sponsored but nearly anyone can get a job that pays as much as a professional mountain biker...

    How to get sponsored. Take a large silver spoon

  • @arude2397
    @arude2397 6 місяців тому

    Well that message about being sponsored is cute but be real - nowadays all that matters is social media and views. There are A LOT of decent riders who struggle to pay the bills or even can't compete everywhere they want because they're not "cool enough". On the other hand there are some fat asses or random chicks who get 5 digits sponsorship just because of their popularity.
    I understand how business works, but companies should scout a little bit more or at least be more open for emerging talents when they're trying to reach them.
    A pinnacle example of that is this year's WFMB and their qualifications rules. Essentially, if you're not from a rich family or don't have SOLID financial support from some sponsor, there's no way you can compete. What's even worse, rich girls that have enough money to travel the world and can barely ride down the course can win the whole tour without a single trick - while the ones who can do tricks won't be even on podium just because they can't afford to start in every single event around the world.
